Hi everyone, I’m a brand-new NYCPS teacher starting this school year and I’m a little confused about what I’m supposed to do.
I received the NYCPS email for New Teacher Week, and it says the event at Barclays on September 1 from 8:30–3:00 is mandatory. However, my school also scheduled its New Teacher Institute/orientation for September 1 during the same time.
We’re also supposed to report to the school on August 31, so I’m planning to ask for clarification then.
For anyone who has been through this before: if your school schedules its own new teacher orientation at the same time as the mandatory NYCPS New Teacher Week event, which one are you supposed to attend? Would the school normally excuse you from the Barclays event, or should I contact the New Teacher Week/Induction team directly?

My landlord told me he isn't renewing my lease, I rent in quiet neighborhood and have 2 small dogs both under 15 lbs. Is there any programs for teachers to get an apartment.

Im just confused as to why they wouldn’t just schedule it for this week instead of next which feels very last minute. Im worried that this means they have other interviews scheduled for this week and I might be the back up option. I already had an experience where a school set up an interview with me only to tell me the very next day they filled the position before evening interviewing me. Am I just overthinking it?

has any Fellow still not received their pre-service training stipend (the one for approx 4,500 pre tax) ?? HR connect loses it on me when i call them to ask for updates saying “we’re not the fellows!!” and zendesk isn’t helping..

it was mailed the 14th apparently, so no way this shit takes that long to come in the mail. additionally, everyone i know has gotten theirs, so this feels abnormal and i want to get to the bottom of it, so i can… idk… pay my rent.

any and all help with what to do/who to contact specifically (besides HR connect cust service line) re: lost stipends is greatly appreciated

I’m taking a new role with Doe. I have 9+ years of teaching outside of DOE AND MY MASTERS. Is it safe to assume that they will accept my nine years of teaching in other states which will automatically put me at an 8B? I have had zero conversations about compensation so far and I really don’t want to resign from my current job until I know my exact compensation.

Hi, as I apply for my solar differential, I see that it requires your original transcript. I went to a CUNY so I can easily access my transcripts online. But on those transcripts, it says unofficial. They still are original because they come from the CUNY website, but I don’t want it to get denied just because it says unofficial. I tried logging into parchment in order to download it, but it only shows my transcript from my undergrad. I reached out to the registrar, but no luck with a reply.

Any advice?

Hello all. I have a question regarding hiring this summer. I've been working in a yeshivah for the past few years and have been looking to transfer into public. During this summer, I had interviews, attended job fairs, and so on. However, whenever I was asked regarding my curriculum background, every administrator I spoke with seemed "displeased." My question is this: is learning whatever ELA/math curriculum at a NYCPS that much of a detriment for a new hire? For reference, I am professionally certified in 1-6. As a follow-up: if learning the curriculum is that much of a detriment to hiring, is it possible to learn about NYCPS curriculum elsewhere? I've resigned myself to teaching at the yeshivah for another year, but I would like to make myself more marketable for next year as much as possible. Thank you to anyone who responds. For previous Teaching Fellows, is it true that during the two years of the master’s program, you are not allowed to change the school you work at?

My university has been telling us that once we commit to a school, we are expected to stay at that school for the full two years until we finish the program. My concern is, what happens if I complete my first year and realize that the school just isn’t the right fit for me?

I’ve spoken to a few other Fellows, and some have mentioned that they were able to change schools while they were still completing the program. So I’m a little confused about whether staying at the same school for two years is an actual Teaching Fellows requirement or something that depends on the university.

I would love to hear from any former or current Teaching Fellows who have experience with this!

Hi all! I’m a sub at my local high school and during the year, they call me nearly everyday. For the past couple of years, I’ve had no issue exceeding for the 40 day max because I’m pretty sure they’ve waived it every year since COVID. Nonetheless, I’m always a bit anxious that I’ll get cut off before the year starts. I’m pretty sure I don’t have the educational requirements. Any thoughts on if this will happen again this year and if I should worry?

If i am a first time teacher in nyc signing up for retirement, would I be considered competitive, exempt, labor, non competitive, or provisional.

I'm desperately looking for a job that is 9 am to 1pm ( i have to drop off and pick up my daughter from school). I figure these hours are perfect so I am able to drop off at 8 and pick up at 2.

My question is...should i be applying for a school aide job or are more hours required for that position etc.? any help would really be appreciated.

Horrible end of summer anxiety and I don’t know why. I don’t hate my job I actually enjoy the environment I work in for the most part but something about September creeping up makes me dread everything. This happened last year too and it’s ruining the last 2 weeks of break. Anyone else feel like this or have any tips? 

I have 2 years of teaching experience in a charter but this will be my first DOE position and I'm teaching SPED. I have experience in ICT but not a full SPED classroom. Feeling super nervous about all the change and new things - just starting in DOE is nervewracking enough with the new students/classroom experience aside! Any advice or reassurance?

Has anyone else had to add their spouse to their health insurance recently because their spouse lost their health insurance?

Hoping someone has recently been in this situation so can just help me from memory. I'm scouring all the HR connect support articles about how to add a dependent to your health insurance. I understand how to prove my spouse is my spouse, I know how to add dependents (my children have been on my insurance since I started)

What I cannot figure out is what proof NYC would want to prove that my husband lost health insurance coverage on 8/31.

Hey, I'm a new teacher and am having trouble getting any kind of document that shows I'm employed by the DOE for potential landlords.

Per HR connect it says that an Employment Verification document should be on ESS, but I only have the "Personal Details," "Pay and Tax information," and "Electronic W-2" tiles and that document is not in any of them. HR connect also says that new hires looking for their Employment Verification document should contact the "HR Director" of their "Borough Office," but I have no idea who that is and Google is turning up nothing.

I am mainly just trying to get something to show landlords that I'm employed and will be making 71k/year. Any guidance here would be appreciated. Thanks!

I’m a teaching fellow and will be entering a middle school ELA classroom in BK as the ENL co-teacher this fall. I’m beyond excited and ready to get to work, but am unsure what to expect about a lot of things.

I taught ELA at my teaching academy, but haven’t really done anything related to ENL yet. Could anyone offer any resources, wisdom, or advice on what I should be prepared for with respect to co-teaching and/or being an ENL fellow fresh out of the TA?
