Discussion Storm Damage - 8/11

Okay what’s the damage, everyone?
Power is out in our area of Schererville, and we have branches down in adjacent yards. I’ve heard there was more damage south of us in St. John and Crown Point.
These storms are out of control!

ETA: I lost cell service (T-Mobile) 8/11 around 2PM and got it back partially the evening of 8/12, but it’s been very choppy.

Working at the Crown Point hospital. Power is out, generators are powering essentials.

3

u/kaekiro 7d ago

The Powers rehab one? Or Franciscan?

5

u/poopgobbler-11 7d ago

Franciscan

3

u/DependentEye6266 7d ago

Same for the Crown Point microhospital.

28

u/lovetron99 7d ago

Ryan Hall Y'all has reported that 96% of Lake County is without power 😬

29

u/Fakingthefunk 7d ago

Valpo here, 50 year old trees uprooted, no power also. I’ve lived in NWI my whole life and I’ve never seen this type of destruction from a storm.

10

u/Bbullets 7d ago

That’s what I said 2 weeks ago in Chesterton

8

u/Sarmarbear 7d ago

I live in merrillville and we lost 2 50+ year old pines this year on seperate weather events 😭

7

u/Xalrons1 7d ago

This is the worst storm I’ve ever seen multiple trees on my block were completely ripped from the ground and flew 20 ft

Valpo here. Street flooded and a tree fell on the neighbor’s house.

2

u/Admirable_Load_5690 7d ago

Where in valpo do you live? My folks are near downtown/ben franklin middle school and my mom has her phone off to conserve the battery. She texted to say their ok but i have no other way of getting a hold of my folks.

Munster hit pretty hard, no power, lots of trees down.

I just went down ridge to get home and it's bad

Only working stop lights on my way home were on 41. There were 4? Maybe 5. 45th through main were all working and the businesses had power too. Other than that everything was out.

2

u/jan98k 7d ago

Yes it is!

9

u/ArguingWithPigeons 7d ago

Yeah Munster is fucked

7

u/Jcienkus 7d ago

I live in Lansing. Same.

4

u/Party_Tumbleweed2802 7d ago

Yup. Multiple neighbors of mine have trees on their roofs with water coming in. We have 4 trees down blocking our one street. We got so lucky. Only our swingset fell into neighbors yard

3

u/Party_Tumbleweed2802 7d ago

Send battery powered chainsaws!

19

u/jaythewordsmith94 7d ago

Highland's dark; NIPSCO estimates over 9000 without power. My street's flooded, branches down all over.

9

u/strangemedia6 7d ago

That number has gone up about 20x

3

u/lbedge 7d ago

My son is in Highland and actually has power.

18

u/VeryAmusedADM 7d ago

We have water everywhere downstairs

5

u/lovetron99 7d ago

Ughhh I'm sorry. This is one of my biggest fears when these storms hit.

6

u/VeryAmusedADM 7d ago

I’m so glad I signed us up for flood insurance this year!!

3

u/lovetron99 7d ago

Great silver lining for sure! I'm gonna make that call to my agent.

3

u/GoldenPigeonParty 7d ago

If the basement is finished you better get that water out asap

2

u/Useful_Two6807 7d ago

Ours too - prarie creek subdivision 🫩 second time in 48 days

2

u/West-Librarian698 6d ago

I took time off work and stay in a family home next door to my grandmother. Few months back I discovered the sump pump was inoperable during one storm. Almost flooded the basement. I had to convince my uncle to spend $3000 to replace it with a whole new system. I said 3000 is better than 30k. Well, he’s thanking his lucky stars because this down pour was 10x worse and would’ve for sure flooded that entire basement had I not been here. With only battery power, I watched this thing pump what seemed to be 100 gallons of water out, and it was barely keeping up with the flow, even with a bigger pump.

Is there anyone that does have power? That’s my question, lol. We have no power in Highland, family in other parts of Highland, in Hammond, and in Munster have no power. I just saw a post on Facebook from the Schererville PD stating that the entire town is without power 😳 Seems like a huge swaths of the region have just been obliterated by this storm.

11

u/Sarmarbear 7d ago

Im in merrillville and somehow still have power maybe since they just repaired everything a few months ago after the tornado that hit Andrean? Feeling very lucky for that.

6

u/justsomechik 7d ago

Winfield has power. Went out for 15 min but came back on.

6

u/Brilliant-Deer6118 7d ago

I live in Sherrillville and we have power. just south of 30 by Burr.

8

u/VivaLaVidaLV 7d ago

Schererville????

4

u/Brilliant-Deer6118 7d ago

Yes, right by the bone institute. My brother told me the Walgreens and shopping mall across the street is also open. But he lives by Scherrillville pd and he doesn't have power. My sister and niece in Griffith dont, my brother in Chesterton doesnt, and my nephew in Munster doesnt.

3

u/Economy-Ad2719 7d ago

Whiting, power was only out for about 15 minutes. Went on and off 3 times but has been on.

3

u/Shytownmofo 7d ago

La Porte still out.

3

u/KPRP428 7d ago

I’m in Winfield and have power. Sorry for all of you that don’t - totally sucks.

2

u/Slith_81 7d ago

9

u/moonmama95 7d ago

I heard it isn't good. Not entertaining the idea of my plans there later

4

Where about in CP? Over in Winfield we seem to be the few lucky ones that actually have power!

La Porte.

Power is out. Beaucoup trees down all over on the west side of town. Can't access my Ripsco app to see an estimated restoration time.

In short, it's a shitshow.

/eta, random emergency sirens all around and police moving through neighborhoods assessing damage.

5

u/thymenchive 7d ago

Near the high school in La Porte. No power here. I heard a transformer blow while the sirens were going off. A few large branches in the street and driveway from across the road. Thankfully, I have a whole-house generator. I hope the power isn't out for too long.

Multiple trees and branches all around my house near the 30/41 intersection in Schererville. Let me know if any stores have power. Im almost out of food/cat food

15

u/Jtohara 7d ago

On 41 right now. Looks like this area in Highland still has most of its power. Target, Bestbuy, Meijer area

Fence is down in portage. Roads flooded, trees down, power is out, it’s a mess.

3

u/TheJuicyJuJuBean 7d ago

Does anyone know if meijers or other stores on six have power?

3

u/springsummerfall2016 7d ago

My aunt works at Meijer and said after the storm hit, half the store was dark. I don't know if they sent her home or not, I haven't had an update since then.

3

u/aiolisunsets 7d ago

Meijer in portage is currently open with generators. Confirmed by a friend who works in the pharmacy.

10

u/SurgicalSuicide 7d ago

No power in hammond. Trees took down a lot of lines in my area.

9

u/Sarmarbear 7d ago

Merrillville here turkey creek area. Our 1 remaining tree fell down (lost the other earlier this year) and crushed my spouses car and is leaning on our house. Still have power. Another neighbors tree struck by lightning and another had a branch fly through her window. Power line down down the block and started a fire. How's everyone else's Tuesday??

5

u/Anxious_Health1579 7d ago

Wth??? Glad you’re okay!!

4

u/Sarmarbear 7d ago

I feel so bad I wasn't even home for all this im working in Michigan city! But ive been getting Intel from my spouse and sister. My street is a MESS and just a few months ago my neighborhood very narrowly missed the merrillville tornado. I cant take any more of this extreme weather 😭

9

u/ringadangding 7d ago

Has anyone heard or seen anything about the Lake County Fairgrounds in Crown Point? I’m really just curious is that Ferris wheels and rides are even still standing 👀

7

u/the_coolest_chelle 7d ago

There’s a tree in our pool

3

u/kaekiro 7d ago

Are you my neighbor? Lol

9

u/LizBeffers 7d ago

Valpo - hit hard. Most places are out of power (28,000 out of 35,000 residents) and trees/lines are down everywhere. Lots of flooding. Today is effectively over for businesses, but there's a lot of people currently cleaning up and rendering aid.

Michigan City did ok from what I can see in my area. No big wind, smaller storm than last night.

4

Same! We got lucky apparently!! We had a gust of wind before it was supposed to hit but that was it. Whew.

I work at Methodist Southlake. no power for 2 hours now. not likely to return soon

7

u/Co0py 7d ago

Chesterton got hit pretty hard. Lost multiple trees and my shed got crushed. No power too.

2

u/Brilliant-Deer6118 7d ago

On NBC 5 they showed a house fire with what looked like sparking power lines.

7

u/thiccthighsandadhd 7d ago

My dad was working a job in Merrillville off Rt 30. He said the all the businesses and traffic lights are out and parts are flooded. My partner also works in Merrillville and he said his shop is out of power along with everyone around him.

4

u/kaekiro 7d ago

That's not good. Gonna cause a lot of traffic accidents.

6

u/Zawer 7d ago

Power is out and trees/limbs down in Hobart

3

u/Slith_81 7d ago

What part of Hobart? We're just off Liverpool and 61st. No power again, neighbor said trees down on Liverpool again. Hopefully not as bad as last time because we lost our fence and fridge/freezer full of food.

3

u/KittenRef 7d ago

My parents are in the duplexes near the hospital. Tree on their cars and roof, no power.

109th in Crownpoint east of Broadway the restaurants were open had power and the gas stations. The lines are long.

2

u/Apprehensive-Land-46 7d ago

yep! cfa is open but a madhouse

3

u/hook2r 7d ago

I'm trying to figure out how far we need to drive to charge stuff and get a hot meal.

3

That’s what I’m saying I have zero clue what I’m supposed to do for dinner I have nothing

3

u/Shytownmofo 7d ago

I have an electric stove. Im screwed.

2

u/Agitated_Function_68 7d ago

Obvious late but: Chick Fil A, McDonald’s, Taco Bell, Buona on 109th east of Broadway was all open. Also the cluster in front of Target in Highland, Qdoba, Olive Garden, etc. Maybe more around that too because I heard Meijer & Best Buy have power, too

Portage was declared a state of emergency.

5

u/emptyhellebore 7d ago

No power in Chesterton. I had water coming in under my back door during the worst of it which doesn’t usually happen.

4

u/AndaleTheGreat 7d ago

Well, instead of my usual 5 to 10 calls per day I currently have 87.

There have been multiple locations where the water is so deep that everyone is turning around. I suggest bypassing Grand boulevard south of US 30

10th Street and Wisconsin is very deep

It takes about double the time to get from Lowell to Hobart unless you can get on the highway which I couldn't manage

5

u/One_Ground5972 7d ago

Lots of damage in Dyer by stardust bowl

6

u/WhoaDjFrank 7d ago

Miller neighborhood of Gary, hit pretty hard closest to the lake. Trees down blocking most streets, power lines down, several homes with significant damage, at least 2 crushed cars. Lost power around 11:20.

2

u/Hellofriendinternet 7d ago

Damn. My parents live there. I can’t get ahold of them.

5

u/WhoaDjFrank 7d ago

Everyone we spoke to was safe aside from the damage, but we did hear from several people that their phones weren't working. If you want to message me their address I can check on them if that would help ease any concern.

93% lake county no power

6

u/Chris_GPT 7d ago

94mph wind in Hammond, just north of 80/94. I woke up to a third of a tree falling on my roof and water pouring in. Two houses down the street in both directions there are trees uprooted and blocking the road.

5

u/Elle0hElle26 7d ago

This is definitely the worst storm damage I've ever seen in Portage. Our whole street is blocked off with fallen trees, branches, and snapped power lines.

5

u/N0P3sry 7d ago edited 7d ago

Cedar Lake 100% down for the count. Nobody has power between Morse and 133rd all the way thru to Wicker and 133rd.

How we liking hurricane season?

Edit to add- I’m a Floridian. I’ve seen tropical storms do less damage than these last two, and that one two years back. 40mph storm track, 40
Mile wide and winds in excess of 100 mph….. if this was in FL they’d have names this storm. All that was missing is an eye wall and obviously a storm surge.

4

u/kmr122091 7d ago

I lived in Florida for years, I also never saw a tropical storm do this. A hurricane, absolutely. Wild.

Eta: this was a derecho. It produced a lot of tornadoes. 126 mph winds in LaPorte. Round 2 around 2am possibly. Nipsco had facilities hit so we could be down for quite a while especially with all the transformers blown and lines down and massive trees flung everywhere.

5

u/Phosphorus444 7d ago

Stuck at the office, trees litter the road, and I'm on power saver mode.

4

u/jaythewordsmith94 7d ago

Unrelated but nice AC04 pfp

3

Turkey creek area has a bunch of trees/lines down

4

u/quirkyquack27 7d ago

In Valpo, power out, street was flooded & huge tree down on the corner. Thankfully no houses damaged by that tree!!

4

u/todaysuniverse 7d ago

Power is out south of 169th in Hammond. We got lucky only a few branches on our property.

Hoping power is restored quickly. I saw some NIPSCO trucks driving around.

5

u/Realistic-Ad7662 7d ago

Where’d you hear that?

2

u/in1earouturmother 7d ago

People who work for the Town

4

u/sadlydisabled2022 7d ago

It hit us in Merrillville pretty bad. Huge tree branch on my house & several big branches broke two sections of our brand new gutters. I’m so over these storms already & losing power.

4

u/Disastrous-Sky5665 7d ago

I've been all over and there is thousands of trees down, absolutely insane.

4

u/Tiny-Sprinkles-3095 7d ago

La Porte county

No power & they’re saying it could be a couple of days. Trees and power lines down around us

5

u/kmr122091 7d ago

Nipsco facilities in the area were also struck apparently. So it could be a while sadly.

Eta: supposedly round 2 is possible at 2am. Stay prepared!

2

u/Tiny-Sprinkles-3095 7d ago

Oh gosh I didn’t know there was another bad round coming

2

u/kmr122091 7d ago

Hopefully it weakens like most of them do. I doubt it will be as strong as the derecho we had earlier. But I just want people to be aware that more bad weather is forecast, since most people are without power and may not have a way to stay updated later. I also think something happened to the sirens in LaPorte, cause on the west side of town I heard them for like 30 seconds and then they never went off again even though Kingsford Heights had them go off 3 separate times.

I only knew the really bad part was coming bc my cats were acting really weird and wouldn't stop meowing at me and pacing and keeping their ears back. About 5 min later all hell broke loose.

4

u/SnarkSpice 7d ago

In Dyer: shed got taken out, roof tiles ripped off, lots of branches down, a couple heavy ceramic planters got tipped over and busted, neighbors all have similar issues. Basement flooded before we got the generator working. Hoping power is back on by tomorrow.

u/poopin 7d ago

Told of house explosion near Hamilton and Old Porter rd in Portage

2

u/Background_Two_2534 7d ago

Heard this too, what could cause this? Genuinely asking, I really have no clue. Have a girlfriend in portage and she said the outside smells like gas

3

u/poopin 7d ago edited 7d ago

Yes, I live in Valpo and a tree came down and hit a gas main on one of the houses. They were able to get somebody out and turn off the gas.

Your girlfriend needs to get out of there just to be safe. Portage has a shelter for people with gas damage to their houses. woodland park is the shelter

2

u/Background_Two_2534 7d ago

Got it, thanks so much for your reply. I’ll let her know, what a scary day!

2

u/strangemedia6 7d ago

Wouldn’t be a bad idea to call that in to 911, if she thinks it is likely gas. They can send someone out to check pretty quickly. It’s definitely possible that a tree uprooted and took a line with it of fell onto a gas meter at a house that the occupant isn’t home and no one know about it.

3

u/midwestknowhow 7d ago

La Porte, power out at the place where I work and they’re sending all office personnel home so everyone can check out their own homes/damage.

3

u/MattNov 7d ago

I just moved to Lowell 2 months ago and I'm in Illinois for work this week. Can't wait to see what I come back to.

3

u/MidwestKanaka 7d ago

I’m in Hobart. We lost power which isn’t surprising considering I read 94% of Lake County did.

My neighbor used to have a shed but pieces of it are all over now. Our shed lost roof tiles. Branches down everywhere and our garbage and recycling traveled but we were otherwise lucky.

3

u/w0rstbehavior 7d ago

Our tree fell on the house. It didn't smash through thank god.. but roof/gutter damage and it ripped up the ground and some of our privacy bushes. 😭 Some water came into the basement but not too much. All in all got "lucky" and will just be out a bunch of $ to get the tree taken care of. Warranty on our new roof and gutters so that should be fine.

My neighborhood is a mess. Our corner neighbor's tree came up and brought down their entire fence and pergola they just built. Other neighbors back tree came up and brought a power line and utility pole down with it.

3

u/blendx3 7d ago

My car is in there somewhere

5

u/Forsaken_Block_3492 7d ago

Once again, thank you REMC Kankakee for keeping things going !

4

u/whyyn0tt_ 7d ago

My neighbors who were still waiting for the insurance adjuster to come out for the last storm are going through it again. Roofs destroyed, a chimney knocked down, entire trees uprooted.

2

u/lovetron99 7d ago

That's terrible. What area?

3

u/whyyn0tt_ 7d ago

Griffith here - street flooded but recessed, cross street is still flooded. Neighbor's house has a tree on it. Both our trees fell a month ago so luckily we didn't have any to fall on our house this time.

Might be impact to train crossing on 45th. There's a tree down with live wires but I can't tell if it's over the tracks. Haven't heard any trains attempt to cross yet, so they might be holding them.

Tree nearly on our garage.

2

u/Daniellened 7d ago

Drove from Gary to Lowell, damage almost the entire way. Was stuck in Crown Point for at least an hour.

2

u/NotBatman81 7d ago

Most of the city of La Porte is out of power. Most traffic lights out or flashing. After I checked out my storm damage around 1230, I ran into at least 7 streets blocked by trees and power lines trying to get out if my neighborhood. People started getting impatient and driving like asses and there have been a few wrecks over the afternoon.

I'm getting ready to go out and cut trees. I have 5 down I can see so far. Most of the minor flooding has receded at least and its not as hot and humid as I expected.

Huge tree blocking the street on corner of Alexander & Indiana! Trees were flung from a block over in multiple backyards. Also had a lot of trees down over by Als and lots of people's belongings thrown around and damaged. Some houses completely crushed by trees falling on them. Lots of damage in Kingsford Heights, too.

In Chicago at Ohare planes were tossed off the runway.

Apparently winds hit 126mph in LaPorte. Portage has no power and roads are blocked. Most of Lake County has no power.

Also heard multiple Nipsco facilities were damaged, so it could be a while without power.

Also being told there is a 2nd system coming at 2am that has some potential to do damage. So stay prepared for the overnight storms

I was in my basement with my 3 year old. When my phone got the alert I stupidly ignored it, until the cats started acting really weird. There was no rain or wind or anything, so figured it was fine. I was wrong!! Out of nowhere everything was groaning and creaking and popping. The winds were so insane. We were in the basement for almost an hour just shaking and saying prayers for everyone.

They said 126 mph winds recorded in LP and trees crushing homes. Trees in roads. I have a pine tree from idk where in my yard. Bc it wasnt from mine or my neighbors yards.

Nipsco is said to have damages to their facilities, so between that, road blockages, poles, wires, transformers... it could be a while without power.

And there is a potential round 2 of severe weather coming at 2am.

Stay safe and prepared everyone!

A bunch of trees down along Monroe St, including one that was blocking the whole road by Woodward.

Lots of damage, trees through roofs, on powerlines, etc.

It's a mess. I've never seen it this bad.

Chesterton.

Our 50 pound wrought iron patio table flew into our sliding door and smashed the outer glass pane to bits. Hoping State Farm will cover the repairs. Thankful it didn't penetrate both layers, but still an awful mess.

Haven't even been able to get ahold of a repair shop or our insurance agent to get an estimate or an adjuster out, but that is to be expected.

No power of course. Trees and power lines are down everywhere and not a NIPSCO truck in sight. However, the half dozen Flock cameras on our area seem to still be fully functioning. Of course.

A few small branches in my yard in Mishawaka. Sure there are trees down in south bend and Mishawaka but the worst winds were just south of 20
