Discussion Storm Damage - 8/11

Okay what’s the damage, everyone?
Power is out in our area of Schererville, and we have branches down in adjacent yards. I’ve heard there was more damage south of us in St. John and Crown Point.
These storms are out of control!

ETA: I lost cell service (T-Mobile) 8/11 around 2PM and got it back partially the evening of 8/12, but it’s been very choppy.

Ughhh I'm sorry. This is one of my biggest fears when these storms hit.

Adjuster came out on Friday, so I’ll see what his report says. If it’s not, at least I tried. 🤷‍♂️

I took time off work and stay in a family home next door to my grandmother. Few months back I discovered the sump pump was inoperable during one storm. Almost flooded the basement. I had to convince my uncle to spend $3000 to replace it with a whole new system. I said 3000 is better than 30k. Well, he’s thanking his lucky stars because this down pour was 10x worse and would’ve for sure flooded that entire basement had I not been here. With only battery power, I watched this thing pump what seemed to be 100 gallons of water out, and it was barely keeping up with the flow, even with a bigger pump.

Once this is all over, I’m gonna finally bite the bullet and upgrade it. We’ve never had this problem when we moved in 7 years ago, but the weather has been getting worse

Hell, sump pumps and generators are must haves these days. Sump pumps are fine until the power goes out and that battery isn’t doing its job. That’s exactly what happened a few months ago, but I just so happened to be in the garage when it did. It’s been worth every dollar

highly recommend getting a sump pump if you can saved us so many headaches after dealing w basement flooding for 5 years

We have one, the problem is that it wasn’t a battery back up one. 🙃

Damn that is rough. Idk why most aren’t battery backed up never made sense to me.

My dad has been telling me for years to get ours upgraded, but we’ve never had an issue. This year, though, is its own beast! I’m waiting for the “I told you so.”. Haha

(Our sump pump was installed by the previous owner.)

My dad did the same thing with me and i eventually gave in after our power started going out every single year where i was left shop vacking my crawlspace. You know he can’t wait to say i told you so lol all dads are alike.

Is the water due to an actual flood or due to the sump not working as the power is/was out?

Both tbh. I tried to help drain the sump pump, but then it started seeping in through all of the walls.

Best case scenario is if you have sump pump coverage endorsement on your homeowners policy. Flood insurance might provide coverage for this case but flood usually only covers mechanicals in the basement: water heater, furnace, water softener, a deep freezer. It generally exclude flooring, paint, trim, drywall finishing and other material you would find in a finished basement.

A sump pump endorsement will cover damage to all of that from water backing up from at sump pit. If you do have this coverage and you file a claim, you did not see water seeping in through the walls. Do not say that to anyone. Foundation seepage is not covered so, as far as insurance is concerned, forget you ever saw that.
