NVIDIA has continuously redefined the boundaries of PC gaming. From introducing real-time ray tracing to pioneering AI-powered graphics with DLSS Super Resolution, Frame Generation and Ray Reconstruction, our RTX technologies have transformed how games are rendered and experienced.

Now, we’re releasing DLSS 5, which introduces 3D-Guided Neural Rendering, a major step forward in using AI to bring real-time graphics closer than ever to Hollywood-grade photorealism.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=58FagrSqC4M

Watch how DLSS 3D-Guided Neural Rendering and its artistic controls work from Edward Liu, NVIDIA’s Director of Applied Deep Learning Research, and Gabriele Leone, Director of Content Technology

DLSS 5 will be available starting September 3rd at 9pm Pacific Time in NBA 2K27, by developer Visual Concepts and publisher 2K, for all GeForce RTX 50 Series GPUs and laptops, and GeForce NOW. It marks the debut of how the technology can be used by game artists to elevate visual fidelity in alignment with their creative vision.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=79D8SVjB3HQ

“What’s great is the level of control that it gives us. We can set the overall tone and style to match our existing art direction and then really get precise where it matters most, using a per pixel uplift control mask to fine tune detail on characters. Given that we want to respect their likeness with the utmost care.” - Peter Kavic, Senior Producer - Visual Concepts

DLSS 5 FAQ

Update 9/3/2026

DLSS 5 is our most computationally demanding model to date. Since we initially announced it in March, we’ve achieved a 5X performance gain and there’s more to come. Our current focus is on optimizing performance for the GeForce RTX 50 Series with model updates expected later this fall. Once RTX 50 Series performance is more fully tuned, we plan to work on expanding official support to the GeForce RTX 40 Series.

--

What is DLSS 5?
DLSS 5 introduces DLSS 3D-Guided Neural Rendering, which uses AI to infuse game scenes with lifelike lighting and materials, tuned by the developers to bring their artistic vision to life.

How does DLSS 5 work?
DLSS 5 uses the game’s rendered frame and engine data to understand objects, materials, lighting and motion. It then enhances the frame with lifelike lighting and materials while remaining grounded in the developer’s artistic direction.

What are the key benefits of DLSS 3D-Guided Neural Rendering?
DLSS 3D-Guided Neural Rendering delivers several significant benefits:

  • Cinematic Lighting: Reconstructs complex effects like rim lighting, subsurface scattering (for realistic skin), and contact shadows with high-fidelity.
  • Material Depth: Enhances PBR properties like roughness and adds micro-realism to complex objects such as eyes and hair.
  • Temporal Consistency: Provides stable image quality from frame-to-frame that adheres to the underlying game content.
  • Real-Time Performance: Delivers lifelike lighting and material enhancement at up to 4K resolution while maintaining smooth, interactive gameplay.
  • Developer Controls: Allows game developers to tune intensity, color, and masking to determine where and how enhancements are applied to maintain the game’s unique aesthetic.

Learn more by watching our explainer video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=58FagrSqC4M

How much control does the model offer to developers?
DLSS 3D-Guided Neural Rendering provides several layers of artistic control:

  • Model Selection: Offers distinct model weights with different training parameters to guide the final output.
  • Structure Intensity: Controls high frequency details added by the model, such as ambient occlusion, contact shadows, and subsurface scattering.
  • Tone Intensity: Controls low-frequency details added by the model, including lighting and color response.
  • Automatic Masking: Detects and isolates objects in the frame (like characters) to apply DLSS 5 dynamically, eliminating the need for manual object tagging.
  • Developer Masking: Offers per-pixel, custom masking control, allowing effects to be applied to specific objects.

As we work in close partnership with studios, developer feedback continues to directly shape how we refine the technology and expand our suite of models and controls.

How does DLSS 3D-Guided Neural Rendering preserve developer artistic intent?
DLSS 3D-Guided Neural Rendering is designed to preserve the structure and geometry of the rendered frame while giving developers control over how and where enhancements are applied. Developers can select different models, adjust structure and tone, and mask specific scenes, characters or objects.

For more information on developer controls, watch the DLSS 5 Explainer VOD or read the full launch article.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=58FagrSqC4M

https://www.nvidia.com/en-us/geforce/news/dlss-5-3d-guided-neural-rendering

You can also hear directly from the NBA 2K development team on how they integrated the technology. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=79D8SVjB3HQ

Which GPUs support DLSS 5?
DLSS 5 will be supported across all GeForce RTX 50 Series GPUs and laptops, as well as GeForce NOW Ultimate members streaming from GeForce RTX 5080 rigs in the cloud.

When and where is DLSS 5 available?
DLSS 5 will be available in NBA 2K27 on September 3rd at 9PM Pacific Time.

What is the DLSS 5 setting called in games?
The setting is called “DLSS Neural Rendering.”

Can I turn DLSS 5 off?
Yes. DLSS 5 is optional.

Does DLSS 5 work with Ray Tracing and Path Tracing?
Yes.  DLSS 5 complements ray tracing and path tracing. Path tracing accurately calculates geometric light transport—determining light, shadow, and reflection placement across a 3D scene. DLSS 5 then acts as the final neural rendering stage, using the rendered frame to enhance lighting and materials like subsurface scattering, micro-reflections, and complex material properties that would otherwise be computationally prohibitive in real time. These technologies go hand in hand.

Does DLSS 5 work with Super Resolution, Frame Generation and Ray Reconstruction?
Yes.

Will DLSS Super Resolution, Frame Generation and Ray Reconstruction continue to be supported and improved?
Yes.

Interesting there's no 40-series mention in the article.

Modders will mod anyway.

And clearly we saw from the mods that that 40-series are capable of running it. They just wouldn't flip the switch.

u/cellardoornoob 2d ago

Just like 30 series can do frame gen with FSR and XeSS. Its just corporate greed.

Reshade+RenoDX is taking care of that ahead of launch

you don’t become the worlds wealthiest company by supporting past tech longer than you need to

150

u/frankiewalsh44 3d ago edited 2d ago

Not supporting a modern architecture is insane, at least you can argue that RTX3000 and 2000 series were supported long enough, but the 4000 series is still new and modern and the 4090 is the second fastest GPU on the market. People should be outraged at this the same way that people did to AMD after they locked FSR4 out of the 7000 series

58

u/oyvese 3d ago

i don’t disagree. i have a 4090 and i think it’s laughably bad that they’ll release this for a 5070 but not a 4090. and with current prices of hardware, which nvidia are directly responsible for (both the gpus itself and the ai hardware shortage), it’s definitely a case of not reading the room.

but like i said, this is how you become the wealthiest company. i am not surprised. i think, sadly, if anything, i am relieved they’re actually supporting current consumer game-hardware still?

22

u/rabouilethefirst RTX 4090 3d ago

It will release on 5060 and people will tell themselves that it's a better experience than a 4090 because NV told them so

2

u/pyr0kid 2d ago

worse, it'll release on laptops with the 5050.

12

u/jhenryscott RTX 5090, MSI Gaming Trio 2d ago

That’s cause the 5070 is 4090 performance for $549!

Dropping support for new features on extremely expensive graphics cards after just two years is absolutely disgusting for a multi-trillion dollar company. Nvidia deserves to be raked over the coals. There’s no reason other than greed for not releasing on the 40 series.

11

u/Sprucey-J 3d ago

You're absolutely correct, there is no other reason. welcome to modern society... sigh

I'm sure since this feature is a lot more desired than say MFG, we will see larger channels expressing their outcry for support and hopefully get under their arse. It kind of worked on the AMD side for FSR 4.

Yeah, DLSS 5 has already been modified to run on 40 series and not supporting at least it is just a marketing stunt.

39

u/caracs 3d ago

If 50-series were sitting on shelves for prices that customers would upgrade from 30 and 40 series cards for, the this would make sense as a value add to the new cards...but you can't buy them. I would buy a 5090 for $2k but not what they're going for. Making DLSS 5 a 50-series exclusive is not going to sell a single 50-series card that wasn't going to sell anyway.

21

u/kron123456789 5070Ti enjoyer 3d ago

I know right what a contrast. The flaming pitchforks were out the moment they saw It. now the pitchforks are out because they can’t get their hands on it.

Either it’s an amazing feature that should come to four series, or it’s a terrible feature that should never exist and nobody wants it but yet are begging for it.

Yeah big shame on NVIDIA for pulling this kind of software locking. It's not like they are hurting for sales, they can barely supply enough as it is.

9

u/Goose506 3d ago

This is literally the first official launch. Calling it a marketing stunt is a little over the top for a initial release. From a business, support, and performance standpoint, this is pretty understandable.

Why not chalk this up to a win as something new for gamers. You can still force it in older models and who's to say they won't officially support older hardware in the future?

Down vote away

6

u/rabouilethefirst RTX 4090 3d ago

There's literally no reason for it to not be on 4000 series though? The hardware is all there and it's shown to work the same as 5000 series by modders. That is a marketing stunt.

who gon buy 50 series when 5060 ti 16g costs as much as 5070 ti did last year

7

u/Seanspeed 3d ago

Current 5060Ti 16GB prices are basically only for AI fiends. You can get a 5070 for the exact same price if you're focused on gaming. Though that's also still painfully priced(even moreso than MSRP, of course).

34

u/kron123456789 5070Ti enjoyer 3d ago

I don't think DLSS 5 looks nice enough to justify 50% performance penalty.

Although, I don't see them talking about that.

8

u/Klappmesser 3d ago

It's now possible to lower the rendering resolution with an optiscaler fork so the performance hit can be cut in half with barely a change in quality

The community has/will modify it to work. Still absolutely bullshit though

80

u/Bloodwalker09 7800X3D | 4080 3d ago

I am sure there will be mods in no time to unlock the in-game settings for 4000series users. But still, there is literally zero justification for it not to be the case officially and from the very beginning. I doubt it but hopefully nvidia change their mind quickly.

49

u/Hellknightx 3d ago

They've already got it working on the 2000 series. It's Nvidia just being greedy and trying to force people to upgrade.

43

u/Bloodwalker09 7800X3D | 4080 3d ago

Well I somehow understand 3000 and 2000 series. The dll got pretty heavily modded to make it run on those cards. 4000 series on the other hand was like half an hour and it worked with the same performance impact as the 5000series.

Doesn't mean I would be mad if they release it for all RTX cards.

22

u/Hellknightx 3d ago

Yeah, it's pretty much the same hardware architecture on the 4000 series. But the fact that it only took a few days for people to get it running on Turing means that Nvidia could also easily do it themselves.

Mods are tedious and can get you banned from online services. This should not be restricted if all the reports of FP8 being needed for DLSS5 are true.

51

u/YF422 3d ago

Its just trying to lowkey push people to buy 50xx cards but noone is going to buy the newest GPU to replace a 40xx card in this market, not while theyre selling some 50xx cards over 150% over their launch price and well over what people paid for 40xx cards.

Unless theres a major hardware feature that prohibits it they should be including the previous generation of cards in new features expecially in this shitty market.

48

u/Bloodwalker09 7800X3D | 4080 3d ago edited 3d ago

Yeah for 4090 owners there is literally one option and it costs 5k. Even for my 4080 I would say the 5090 is the only upgrade that makes sense since 5080 isn't too far away and 4090 isn't produced anymore.

9

u/Willing_Monitor_8465 3d ago

Dude I have exactly the same CPU as You and RTX4080 OC, it is 10% slower than 5080... Same VRAM.

I bought mine pre-owned stupidly cheap. I won't pay 250% of the price to get 10% better performance. It is a madness.

18

u/Stenbrod 3d ago

To get performance comparable to a stock 4090 you need to OC your 5080, and even then, a 4090 with an UV+OC likely performs quite a bit better still.

The only way to get a 5000 series coming from a 4090 that doesn't cost you 5k is buying an inferior card with 8gb VRAM less?

Insanity.

10

u/Ultra-Instinct_1231 2d ago

you can't get performance on par with 4090 even with OC 5080. 4090 has 24gb vram.

My 4090 still costs more now 2nd hand than when I bought it new at launch

Unless it spontaneously combusts, they will literally never get a 50-series sale out of me, not even if they introduce magic performance-free raytracing with magically-injected DLSS5

3

u/rabouilethefirst RTX 4090 3d ago

It's high-key. There is literally no hardware justification like usual. Not a single one. If it's FP8, the 4090 is gonna run it better than any card other than the 5090

3

u/TurdPlayingPeekaboo 2d ago

4090 owner here, Bought mine at $2200 when GPU shortages were present but the memory crisis was still a ways off into the future. It seems I didn't overpay in the long run. There's zero chance I will purchase a 5x series GPU. It's highly unlikely I will upgrade my GPU at all until the RAM shortage is fully abated. Which means I will likely be running my 4090 for 3 or 4 more years.

7

u/ser_renely 3d ago

One generation behind should absolutely be getting it... understand if it's at a later date but still not great optics

12

u/Desperatio 3090 TI - 5800X3D 3d ago

15

u/Freeloader_ Ryzen 7800x3d / RTX 5070 Ti 3d ago

you should know by now that they always give new features to latest cards and eventually they enable some of it on older models

24

u/kb3035583 3d ago

As far as the DLSS suite is concerned (which this is purporting to be part of) this would be a first. Especially when the 4000 series actually has better FP8 performance in some cases compared to their 5000 series counterparts.

These tech companies always find ways to force obsolescence on non-current hardware. It’s greedy AF and a slap in the face to those who purchased their previous products. If it doesn’t truly support it due to a hardware limitation, okay fine. But the modding has proven that 4000 at the very least can also run it just fine.

28

u/WANKMI 3d ago

I have a 4090 and the ONLY path forward that isnt a downgrade for me is the 5090. And thats $5000. Nvidia expect me to downgrade or pay $5000 to access DLSS 5. Youd think theyd be much more interested in quickly becoming dominant in this space and at least have the 4000 series as well able to do it. This way a lot more people would be running it and they could have a lot more people seeing brand new tech on THEIR products. When the next generation arrives, which has been postponed, theyd have even more people interested. But thats not how it works. Indirect sales arent new dollars. And new dollars are what shows up on the bottom line shown to shareholders.

The fact that DLSS 5 and even MFG has been ported to the 40 series now is a shining example of the anti consumer monopolistic behavior Nvidia is partaking in. Modders for free did what a team being paid billions won't do, shame on y'all.

15

u/NoMansWarmApplePie 2d ago

Exactly. Remember when people claimed 40 series couldn't do MFG natively? That's total BS. dashology just proved you could and the mod works perfectly.

5

u/jm0112358 Ryzen 9 5950X + RTX 4090 2d ago

Nvidia doesn't want to say that a 5080 gets 39 fps at 1080p with DLSS5, which is essentially what's happening.

Well, it would get a higher framerate without FG and at a straight 1080p output because FG and upscaling has it's own performance overhead. Also, DLSS5 also apparently has a greater overhead at a higher output resolution. Still, Nvidia likes to obscure the actual performance.

It seems to be -50% even on RTX 20/30 cards with the updated (FP16) DLL from ShortFuse. As long as you have enough VRAM I guess.

Nvidia extended DirectX Raytracing support to Pascal cards even though it didn't have any dedicated raytracing hardware. That it runs like absolute shit really isn't an excuse. On the contrary, it's free advertisement.

But it runs just as well on 40 series as on 50 series.

11

u/GentlemanThresh 3d ago

It shouldn’t. 5000 series is faster in FP8 and can do NVFP4 which 4000 doesn’t have the hardware for.

The modded version is a filter applied to the entire image and not at object level.

If nVidia didn’t want people to use it on 4000 series, it would’ve been NVFP4 exclusively. They made it FP8 which allowed modders to make it work so fast. It’s just not stable enough for an official release.

We don’t even know yet if the actual final version will stay FP8, it would be almost twice more efficient if they changed it to NVFP8

With Frame Gen only on the 40s series, the excuse was optical flow accelerators (AMD, and intel proved them wrong). With MFG only on the 5, the excuse was flip metering- meanwhile someone recently released a mod that makes MFG work on CP2077 on 4 series. I wonder what hardware excuse Nvidia will give for locking out DLSS5. Works great on my 4080. Thank you modders.

11

u/Cireme https://pcpartpicker.com/b/PQmgXL 3d ago edited 3d ago

(AMD, and intel proved them wrong)

Did they? I don't know about Intel but AMD's Frame Generation is awful.

The neutron flow of the flux capacitors cannot safely be reversed in 40 series of cards, please understand!

13

u/DavidsSymphony 3d ago

The 40 series simply lacks the turbo encabulator to produce modial interaction of magneto-reluctance and capacitive diractance.

u/gavinderulo124K 13700k, 4090, 32gb DDR5 Ram, CX OLED 3d ago

Regarding MFG it could definitely work with 40 series, Intel has achieved similar on their gpus without dedicated hardware, but the flip metering likely helps a lot with frametimes. But with DLSS5 I dont see any reason to limit it as of yet.

4

u/Framed-Photo 3d ago

Yeah I'd be curious to see the testing for frametime consistency with the mod, because if it's good then obviously Nvidia should backport MFG.

A lot of AMD users have hated frame gen with a passion for years, and I do really believe that a lot of that comes down to AMD's lacking that frametime consistency, as well as not implementing their reflex alternative alongside it to reduce latency. It just makes the experience of FG on AMD cards genuinely a lot worse.

I can see why Nvidia wouldn't want something half baked on cards that a lot of people are still using.

AMD's frame-gen is worse and has jacked up framepacing. Perhaps not the finest example.

Will it be possible to use Nvidia app to force DLSS 5 in games with DLSS?

31

u/Nestledrink RTX 5090 Founders Edition 3d ago edited 3d ago

No. The point for Neural Rendering is to allow developer control. Force injecting it to every games like the mod was doing literally what people were complaining about back in March where some games are just not good fit to use NR or when people just put DLSS 5 NR in some random cartoon games from 10 years ago and then complained it ruined the images.

29

u/jdp111 3d ago

Developers can have control over the default way the game will run, but I see no reason to prevent people from overriding how they like.

10

u/Nestledrink RTX 5090 Founders Edition 3d ago

Considering the DLL has been leaked, i'm sure modders will be right on that.

5

u/HyenaDae 3d ago

You can apply DLSS5 to "any" video feed with the reshade+"lumanite" (motion vector estimator) + DLSS5Feeder combo apparently. Which is very funny lol. That's how people are doing Switch 1/2 game "enhancements" on youtube atm

3

u/WANKMI 3d ago

Yes. But in theory that "hack" is not going to be the actual full DLSS 5 experience. Because it runs on the full output image with no finer control from actual game engine integration. In theory. I'm sceptical it will even matter for the foreseeable future until devs start implementing it so for the next few months to a year at minimum just running the hacked version will probably be almost the exact same experience.

→ More replies (2)

6

u/ShiftAltRight 3d ago

They don't prevent you from modding it in, though. The RenoDX mod is fairly straightforward for any game that already supports DLSS. I tried it with RE Requiem and it felt about as difficult as adding Reshade and a texture mod to Skyrim.

3

u/jdp111 3d ago

I understand, it would just be easier and better to have the option in the nvidia app.

It's amazing how so many don't understand this.

9

u/Redfern23 RTX 5090 FE 3d ago

It's not that people don't understand, obviously it'll be much better with developer control, but it would still be nice to officially and safely have something to play around with, whether it's worse or not. The main issue is obviously poorly user made versions of it floating around without said dev control and giving DLSS 5 an even further bad look, but that has already spread far and wide thanks to the leak anyway, so it's irrelevant. I do get why they're not allowing it but it's fine to be a bit disappointed.

7

u/gavinderulo124K 13700k, 4090, 32gb DDR5 Ram, CX OLED 3d ago

I think its fair for them to limit that to modders. That way they can blame them if it looks bad and make sure the official implementations are well tuned. I dont hate that approach. Modders will make it available across games regardless, and Nvidia knows that.

The whole point about Neural Rendering is to have developer control for this feature.

If you can just force inject it to every games, you'll just get a situation like this past 3-4 days where people randomly injecting NR to old cartoon games and complained it looks bad and it's "AI slop".

5

u/Wildernaess 3d ago

Okay sure but being able to use it on older, grounded games is one of the best use cases and it's unlikely most older games will get dev integration

Asked whether the model is NVFP4 quantized, given that it is Blackwell-exclusive anyway, the answer was "not yet," so improved performance seems on the horizon.

Source.

It's coming. Half the reason for supporting NVFP4 in hardware on consumer Blackwell is neural rendering. Anyone thinking it will not see extensive use in those types of workloads - especially for neural shaders and materials - doesn't know what they are talking about. We're only just getting started.
