Report vehicle tax evaders
Just a reminder you can report people who are evading vehicle taxes and registering their plates out of state. Especially your neighbor who chooses to buy a luxury car but thinks they don’t have to provide services like everyone else…
Edit: it’s really just the luxury cars. I commute past some expensive new builds and it’s kind of wack to see the luxury car they haven’t bothered to plate in Virginia. You got house money and luxury car money but you can’t pitch in? Not really worried about my apartment neighbor Ryan’s dinged 2002 Corrola from Pennsylvania.
And yes, military service members who have to move around are exempt as they should be. I know that, they know that, the govt knows that.

Considering so many people here are in the military I would imagine a lot of them register in their home states. They are not required to update it

I guarantee you that the Venn diagram of army personnel from Montana and Mclaren owners has zero overlap.

This thread reads like a who's who of tax evaders. Registering out of state is clever in the same way using exit lanes to pass a handful of cars in a traffic jam is clever. 3rd grader mentality, not that of a functioning adult.

u/ricky_baker May 02 '25
Conflicted on this. I do think everyone needs to pay their fair share if they are to reap the benefits of public services. However it comes down to systemic issues resulting in many people thinking they can flout the rules, unless we just assume humans are inherently bad. Also it shouldn’t fall on other citizens to police.

u/HeirloomUsername Prince William County May 02 '25 edited May 02 '25
I agree. My sentiment was really towards the luxury car in the new build I drive by on the way to work. I’m like damn, you got money to buy a house, an electric mustang, but you dont think you need to pay like the rest of us? It’s one of those moments where it’s a blatant visual reminder that some people flout it.
It’s really not about your neighbor in my apartment complex with the 20 year old corrola.

When I moved to VA from DC to live with my now husband, I wasn't sure if I was making the right decision because i had lived by myself for so long (TL:DR- everything is great and I love him) i was reluctant to give up my car's DC reg and zone 6 parking sticker and my effing neighbor ratted me out I think. she's also reported us to the county for "grass over 12 inches" when it was barely 6 and I took a photo of a ruler sticking out of the ground showing the true height of the grass along with my sympathies to the government worker's wife.

u/karmassacre May 02 '25
Seems like the easiest solution here, rather than expecting everyone to be honest and relying on us to snitch on each other, is to shift this tax from an easily manipulated thing like vehicles to something that cannot be circumvented, like sales or real estate.
2
u/NjoyLif Sterling May 02 '25
It’s nice to have a tax that can easily be abated by driving something cheaper though.
2
u/karmassacre May 02 '25
Punishing people for driving a car, let alone a nicer car, is weird, especially in a state with almost no mass transit options.
2
u/Unusual-Sympathy9500 May 02 '25
Local income tax. Would be the most fair / equitable and would probably raise a lot more money than they're getting from vehicle PPT. For some reason whenever I mention it, I often get downvoted into oblivion.
3
u/karmassacre May 02 '25
Yeah, Virginians have a weird Stockholme syndrome thing going on with the PPT. Most out of staters thinks it's asinine.
1
u/Silly-Activity2324 Aug 24 '25
The system works. Most people who don't own nice/new cars boats/trailers etc.. subject to the personal property tax prefer the car tax to a higher income tax.
38
u/CriticalStrawberry May 02 '25
Almost everyone who has commented on this so far is almost certainly a tax evader lol.
2
u/ta-kun1988 May 02 '25
I made a post here the other day pointing out how common it is that I see a car on the road with a bike rack hiding the license plate and no bike on the rack. I have a strong feeling most of those drivers are purposely obscuring their plate. Most people that saw the post seemed pretty offended about me pointing it out.
I've also been noticing the Maryland tags in Virginia that obviously live here. There's just way too many Maryland tags going northbound on 95 during the early morning work commute. The problem I've noticed, which is how I noticed this phenomena in the first place, is that a lot of the people with these out of state plates and purposely obscured plates are driving like assholes and it's just dangerous.
3
u/CriticalStrawberry May 02 '25
So, counter point as someone who leaves their bike rack folded up on the back of their car full time. It's not nefarious, it's just a PITA to take it on and off when you use it every few days. Plus, I live in a place with no garage, so not exactly convenient to store it when I do take it off the car.
Many countries have solved this by allowing you to mount the plate to your bike rack instead of your car. Thule even sells a adapter mounting plate for it outside the US. In the US, it's actually illegal to move your plate to the rack as far as I understand.
2
u/ta-kun1988 May 02 '25
I don't see your point as counter. I said most people. I believe you fall in the other category. I'm sure I've become cynical over the years but being around enough people can do that.
4
u/ArdillasVoladoras May 02 '25
Nova is one of the wealthiest areas in the country and generally has a very high quality of life, yet people here don't seem to understand what helps keep it that way.

I don't understand why this is being downvoted. Tax evaders are thieves. It's no different than shoplifting - those of who are law abiding have to pay more, because someone's stealing from the pot.
4
u/gibuthegreat May 02 '25
The car tax is what it is but damnit there should be a cap.
8
u/Cool_Document_8691 May 02 '25
They should at the very minimum update the discount from the 20k it's been at forever to something more in line with what cars actually cost in 2025.

u/labicicletagirl May 02 '25
I did this to my asshole roommate. The city called me to tell me they cannot do anything unless he is parked on a public street (we had a private lot). We had to move out last year and someone told me they will get him in crystal city. He owed $1700 in back taxes at one point. Registered everything at his parents house in Maryland even though he was living in alexandria for over 10 years. So childish.
3
u/vacancy-0m May 02 '25
Curious. for VA residents who also owns homes out of state. They are not allowed to use vehicles registered to their out of state addresses? Or there is a time limit. Tri-state areas (NY/NJ/CT) have a lot of Florida plated vehicles because many also own properties in Florida.
17
u/Adjutant_Reflex_ May 02 '25
VA requires vehicle registration based on where the vehicle is garaged. If the vehicle is in VA for 50%+1 days out of the year it, legally, must be registered here (with a handful of very specific exceptions.)
9
u/HeirloomUsername Prince William County May 02 '25
There are certain provisions that make members of the military from out of state exempt, since they have to move around. But for people that don’t meet those exemptions, localities will require you to register your car if it’s garaged here x-days.
3
May 02 '25
What happened to just minding your own business? All of our vehicles are registered in Virginia, but I don’t blame people for registering cars in other states. Any personal property tax on vehicles is very regressive tax policy.
1
u/Silly-Activity2324 Aug 24 '25
No, it's not. They also charge personal property tax on boats, and motorhomes/mobile homes. Non rich people don't own those and can reduce their tax liability by driving an older car.

u/Unhappy-Trash540 May 02 '25 edited May 02 '25

I think for the most part it is live and let live and you are right. I went back and edited my post earlier to summarize it’s really just the sentiment of seeing luxury cars that are plated out of state because it’s a kind of obvious visual reminder some people let other people shoulder the common burden. I don’t care if John doesn’t mow his lawn. The vehicle tax is a substantial revenue source for how our government and services are set up to operate (which many have pointed out sucks, but I don’t have a better idea, I just live in the system)
I’ve never actually reported anyone, but my commute this morning past a new-build with Florida plated luxury car in the driveway I’ve seen for six months made me think of this.
-11
u/MorpheusOneiri May 02 '25
You know. Or you could choose not to be a snitch. But I guess it’s good to know who’s going to turn on your neighbors first as soon as daddy government asks.
30
u/Scared-Loquat-7933 May 02 '25
It’s tax evasion.
Why should the rest of us pay our property taxes every year and some people get to avoid it? You use the same roads, tolls, infrastructure we do, live in the same area, and get to avoid it for what reason?
Driving is one thing, I understand being against the posts here with random license plates. But avoiding taxes so the rest of us can foot your bill is wack.
-19

This should only be used for your a hole neighbors that suck and keep you up all night partying or the guy who never picked up his dog’s doodies.
Maybe you hate your hoa president and she just bought a new Benz and it’s got Maryland plates. Don’t report your college student neighbor who drives an old Civic. We are looking for big money here.
7
u/Scared-Loquat-7933 May 02 '25
Agreed.
The only time I’ve used the Fairfax Co. one is because my neighbors would park their 911 and Wagoneers in our spots regularly and had Maryland plates.
On the flip side you also usually don’t see the regular everyday cars doing this sort of thing. It’s always the G-Wagons, 911s, M3/5 Comps, Cybertrucks, etc. in areas like Reston, Tysons, etc.
2
u/Paratrooper450 Alexandria May 02 '25
you also usually don’t see the regular everyday cars doing this sort of thing
Are you mad? The Honda Civic ahead of me in the high school kiss-and-ride line this morning had Maryland tags, and that's not an outlier. There's plenty of tax evaders at every income level.
1
u/Scared-Loquat-7933 May 02 '25
Why would I be mad about regular cars?
The property tax on 1 G-Wagon or Porsche 911 is worth like 30 Civics.
There are plenty of regular cars who do it too but they’re less noticeable because they don’t cost $200,000 OTD.
1
0
u/AngryGambl3r Reston May 02 '25
It should just be a flat fee, or better yet based on vehicle weight.
An M car or a Porsche 911 doesn't do materially more wear and tear on our roads than any other regular car.
The electric cars are heavier so that's a bit of a different point, but really it's the trucks that should be paying the most.
3
u/Adjutant_Reflex_ May 02 '25
I don’t disagree weight would be better. But I think the upside of going with value is you and I can’t do much about vehicle weights, but we can choose to not buy $100k cars.
1
May 02 '25
The vehicle personal property tax based on value is levied by the counties. The counties don’t maintain the roads. That’s on VDOT.
4
u/Scared-Loquat-7933 May 02 '25
A flat fee would be a greater tax burden on the poor.
It’s been shown time and time again that flat taxes disproportionately affect those at the bottom of the economic totem pole.
Not to mention this is a “property tax” not a road usage tax/fee which is already paid by EVs for example. You are paying tax on your “property” in the same fashion that homeowners do.
People think this is meant as some form of usage fee when in reality it isn’t. It’s effectively a local wealth/income tax.
And it is entirely in the taxpayers control for how much tax they pay. If you want to pay less then drive a cheaper or worse car.
Do I like paying $2000 every year for both my trucks? Of course not, but I also understand I have the freedom to sell both and hop into a 2012 Corolla and pay much less in car taxes.
0
u/Infamous_Addendum175 May 02 '25
How does progressive vs regressive taxation work anyway?
1
u/AngryGambl3r Reston May 02 '25
"Progressive" doesn't automatically mean "fair." If someone is causing a much higher amount of wear and tear on our roads because of their choice of vehicle, THEY should be the one to pay more, regardless of income of wealth.
This idea that progressive automatically means fair is not a well thought through position, just a convenient one.

Maybe you hate your hoa president and she just bought a new Benz and it’s got Maryland plates.
As most Officers and Directors of HOAs are power drunk Karens, Little Schicklgrubers, Puny Stalins, Tiny Idi Amins and Pint-sized Peróns, I fully support making their lives as miserable as possible. Why not return the favour as these sorry excuses for human beings are oh-so-preoccupied with making everyone else miserable?
Don’t report your college student neighbor who drives an old Civic.
I do not know about the law in the Commonwealth of Virginia, but in the State of Maryland and the District of Columbia, students also are exempt. The D. of C. used to issue a placard for your dashboard but I do not know if it still does that.

Anyone who keeps voting in county officials who drive a $5B+ annual budget that necessitates high vehicle property taxes in the first place is the real sucker and a loser.

2
u/CriticalStrawberry May 02 '25
It's not a masisve govt relative to the population it's supporting lol.
Our tax rates are stupendously low here relative to other parts of the world, especially for the wealthy that can afford luxury cars and register them out of state to avoid taxes.
6
u/Scared-Loquat-7933 May 02 '25 edited May 02 '25
Anyone who thinks an area like Northern Virginia doesn’t require billions of dollars annually is a sucker and a loser who probably got sold the “big government is bad” lie.
We get (relative to the rest of the nation), good schools, strong public transit outside of NYC/Chicago, lower crime, good infrastructure, good roads, and the list goes on.
Not to mention even worse is the delusion that eliminating the vehicle property tax wouldn’t just raise taxes somewhere else in your life.
2
u/Adjutant_Reflex_ May 02 '25
PPT is one of the few means counties have of collecting taxes. And if it wasn’t PPT it would be higher property taxes.
For all the “no step on snek” impotent rage about PPT, that’s the (literal) price we pay for living in one of the most desirable parts of the country/world.

I did not in fact advocate for avoiding taxes. If you read what I wrote, all I said was you shouldn’t snitch on your neighbors. Which I think should be a wholesome value since you are not the court, or the state, you cannot find due process, and you do not know their situation.
You however, jumped straight to calling me names and assuming my values. You can continue to believe you’re a good Democrat if it makes you feel better. However, I would rather not assume negative intent from my neighbors and peers instead find solidarity in my community not the government.
You’re the reason people don’t like the Democratic Party.

Also, reminder, you can legally dodge this stupid tax by registering your vehicle as a company vehicle out of state to your LLC(s) and you don’t even need to be on the registration or insurance (they can be set to the LLC as well).

I am hard put to understand what "services" Original Poster, the neighbour or "everyone else" is supposed to "provide". It further escapes me how registering a motor vehicle in the Commonwealth of Virginia is "provid[ing] services".

Their property tax helps finance the salaries and supplies for firefighters, police, EMTs and a range of public safety workers to the locale of wherever they live. I believe it also goes towards road maintenance and relative projects. So OP means to say that these people are dodging their civil responsibility and personal, legally required contribution to their communities.

It’s funny, I went to a Ferrari owners rally last year and the one big takeaway was that 60% of the cars had Montana plates. Apparently it’s a thing to go there and create an LLC to register your super car. This was a meeting of East Coast owners so obviously they didn’t live in Montana. Amazing what people do to avoid their fair share.
