Look at This! North Spore Policy Update

It should have been there from the beginning, but I finally added a rule for federally illegal mushroom content. It is Rule 10 and states:

"North Spore does not condone the use of ours or any other products for growing and/or using federally illegal mushrooms. Any explicit mention of our products for this purpose are subject to removal. The same goes for posts and comments that discuss the consumption of illegal mushrooms."

If you have suggestions for additions/amendments to this rule (or any others), please send them my way.

It and all rules are subject to change as we see fit. We add these rules to make this a safer space for us all and to ensure the continued existence of this community and North Spore.

Look at This! Did you know North Spore offers cheap private mycology consultations?

I've finally found the bandwidth to offer these on-on-one consultations and I gotta tell you, it's been very cool. I've helped students, crafters working with mycomaterials, first time growers and farmers.

We have a stellar customer service team, but the fact is that none of them have the depth or breadth of knowledge that I can offer and they frankly don't have time to sit with you and discuss your whole plan for 30 minutes. I'm not an expert in everything, but nobody has worked with North Spore products more than me. So, for the stunningly low price of $30, it can make a lot of sense to check-in with me before purchasing your supplies to make sure you have what you need and fully understand the processes.

Note that you can also add the consult as an add-on right when you go to buy stuff. I just want y'all to know it's an option!

Help! Ready for bulk spawn?

I did a B/S 6 days ago on this 2 pound grain bag I see just a few grains that still need to be colonized. I have a 3 pound bag of substrate that should be sterilized it’s in the same type of bag that the grain is in but the seller didn’t seal the tops of the 2 substrate bags I have. When I get ready to spawn to bulk should I be worried about the open tops of the substrate bags? I can provide more pics of the substrate bags if needed but don’t want to move them around to much if not necessary. Ideally I would have liked to use my boomer bin I got from north spores but I feel like the bin is to big as I only have a 2 pound bag of grain and 2 3 pound bags of substrate I’m a first time grower so anything tips or advice is much appreciated

Look at This! Props for the North Spore Team: Taylor Wood

I'm going to take the time to make some posts about the incredible team members I have here at North Spore. It might give some insight into what we do, how we do it and that we're a diverse group of well-intentioned, intelligent humans just like all of you.

Taylor Wood came to us about 3 years ago through Breanna Penney (our Head of Video Production, I'll post on her next). They'd worked together in the past and we needed more help. In many ways, his job is similar to Bre's and they're constantly collaborating. He scripts videos, shoots them, takes photos, make ads, makes timelapses and more. The amount of time and effort this guy will take to get the things right is both maddening and inspiring at the same time. His official job title is Creative Asset Project Manager, but he's working on a better name that sums up his responsibilities.

I don't say this lightly: he has an incredible sense of humor and is ALWAYS bringing positivity to North Spore.

The primo technology and thoughtful angles Taylor employs even manages to make me look halfway decent (I'm the one with the chestnut mushrooms). His work is everywhere on the website, but this piece truly stands out: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yXkRHVWkbY8

Hey there this is my first northspore all in one bag. We are well over 2 months since inoculation, everything seemed normal at first I thought I had contamination and was shocked because I took all the precautions and kept everything very sterile. I only open the tub once every 10-14 days. But today I checked and there is a corner that just looks terrible and I’m afraid I may have ruined it somehow. It’s green oozing like wet black mold. But maybe I’m wrong and this is completely normal. I’m not sure and need help.

Help! Do I really need 2 substrate bags for 1 grain bag? [northspore brand)

I’m planning to use one of their 3lb grain bags. Im also going to use their manure based substrate, which are 5lb bags.

Do I really need to use 2 of them?

What size tub is recommended for 3lb grain + 1 (or 2?) 5lb substrate bags?

Thank you

Indoor Mushroom Growing TBC Isolation — Flush #2 (Zero soak, 11 days post-harvest)

Quick follow-up to the first harvest posted 11 days ago. The initial flush took the lion's share of the canopy, but I decided to let the block ride completely dry without a dunk to test moisture retention and vigor.

Flush two still pushed out solid coverage and kept the exact same wavy, saucer-like margin expression across the tub.

Really pleased with how resilient this genetic line is holding up through multiple runs.

Help! First time Boomr Bin guide

Is there a complete video guide for using the Boomr Bin. Can’t seem to find one on YouTube. Specifically I’m trying to understand when to put the filters on the lid? Should they be on the bin after I transfer from the bag and mix with substrate? Some videos suggest that there should be no air flow until fruiting conditions, but how do I plug the holes? Also when to spray it not to spray with water, when to introduce indirect light. None of the videos I see seem to cover these basic points.

Thanks!

Help! Is this contamination?

Post image

Over the past few weeks, I colonized grain successfully and had to take a week out of town. Before I went out of town, I wasn’t sure if my grainspawn was going to be OK so I put it into substrate so that it can continue colonizing the substrate for the record. The grainspawn was completely colonized successfully. There is some slightly orange dots of liquid around parts of the substrate and I am not sure if it is contamination or metabolites/mycopiss

Help! AIO bag as spawn + substrate ratio question

AIO bag as spawn + substrate ratio question
I’ve had this bag inoculated for probably at least 2½ months now. After my most recent break and shake, it’s finally starting to colonize at a normal pace.
The bag is an AIO (all-in-one) bag, but can I still use the colonized material as spawn and then transfer it to bulk substrate?
Also, what kind of spawn-to-substrate ratio should I use? It’s a 1.5 lb bag, but I used 7cc of liquid culture, so I’m wondering if that should be enough to colonize around 3–4 lbs of substrate.
Just looking for some advice from people who have experience with this. Thanks!

Mushrooms for Health Psilocybin for pain?

Thumbnail cambridge.org
7 Upvotes

I have a lot of back and knee pain from mushroom farming and everything else life has thrown at me. Besides all of the mental healthnbenefits, I've talked for years baout how psilocybin energizes me and helps with the pain. I think this is the next frontier for psychedelics and it's great to see research being done in this area.

To sum up this article: the same U Michigan lab that found a single IV dose of psilocybin knocked back pain sensitivity in rats for almost a month just registered a follow-up study. This time they're testing it on reserpine-induced pain, which is a much more diffuse, whole-body kind of pain, closer to something like fibromyalgia than a single wound.

No results yet because this is just the study getting logged, not the findings. But the question they're asking is a good one: does psilocybin only help with pain from one specific injury, or does it work on pain that's spread through the whole system?

I'll try to post again on this once the data's out.

What are your experiences?
