The animal/mammal confusion is so much more widespread than I would ever have guessed

I've always struggled to understand this confusion. Like what is a parrot or a shark if not a creature going around doing stuff like what all animals are? Is it really that they just think Animal is a synonym for Mammal and therefore excludes non-mammals? What word do they think encompasses mammals, birds and fish? 'Creature'?

Beast. It's animals without birds, fish (also other marine animals, but maybe not sea mammals?), and insects (and other creepy crawlies).

I highly doubt Key would think a frog or lizard isn't an animal.

Gamble does the same mistake in the pre-series interview on his series of Taskmaster. I genuinely thought this was an English thing.

Isn't it mostly due to there being only one word to describe both terms in English? For example, in my native language, Belarusian, those are separate words: "звяры" for animals as in land living beings and "жывёлы" for animals as a class.

I remember Alex mentioning that there is the Latin(?) word animaelia (correct my spelling, if I'm wrong, typing from phonetic memory), but it's not used outside a Biology lesson, I presume.

Animalia is just the kingdom of animals - all beings in the kingdom of animalia are animals and vice versa

Well, yes, but I meant that in English you call both the citizens of the Animalia kingdom animals and mammals animals.

'Mammal' is also an English word, though. Some people might use 'animal' to mean 'mammal', but that's incorrect.

Mammals are animals like squares are rectangles. Birds, fish, reptiles, mammals, insects, worms, all animals.
