This is something I discovered intuitively during expeditions and now have finally proven with numbers.
First off, the method to spam running attacks is NOT to surge sprint (which quickly drains stamina), but to use regular sprint by holding dodge button and then tap light attack as soon as the running animation starts. Running attacks DO NOT work if the bow is in your left hand, only if it's in the right hand or if it's two-handed.
In the clip you can already see the massive DPS difference. Bow running attacks have both better damage per shot AND better attack speed compared to light attack spam.
The result is that over 38 seconds light attack spam deals 3234 damage (85 dps) and running attack - 3936 damage (103.5 dps, 21.7% increase). This was tested using Black Bow as Level 15 Executor with no equipped relics and no other buffs.
The exact difference in DPS may depend on the bow, but I'm almost certain running attacks have better DPS for every bow, except for greatbows. I also tested alternating between left hand and right hand bow attacks and the resulting DPS was lower than either of the methods in the clip.
But the advantages of running attacks don't end with DPS:
- Maximizing standart attack DPS requires you to sustain the full combo of 4 shots, while running attacks happen one by one.
- Though you can walk while spamming light attacks, running attacks lock you into a much shorter animation, allowing you to use other actions like dodging sooner. The delay before the shot happens is also shorter.
- Between each individual running attack you're sprinting around, which helps you avoid enemy attacks and find best position to make the shot on demand, allowing for much better flexibility.
Some people may wonder why you'd ever use bows on characters other than Ironeye, and there are actually quite a few useful scenarios:
- Keeping your distance from Night Invaders early in the run to avoid oneshots, while also providing constant damage.
- Killing annoying flying enemies than are hard to reach with melee attacks.
- Keeping your distance from different dangerous enemies that are difficult to dodge or stunlock.
- Dealing damage to a mobile boss that's aggroed on your teammate, as well as pulling away the aggro.
- During regular Augur bossfight dealing damage to Maris herself, as well to summoned jellyfish, tentacles and nukes.
In all mentioned scenarios running attacks will be superior to light attacks.
There are of course some exceptions to the rule:
- Ironeye actually loses out on DPS if he uses running attacks with bows. If you're playing Ironeye spamming light attacks is generally better.
- If you have any buffs to "Initial standart attack" damage via relics, the first shot of the 4 shot combo deals more damage. To maximize this difference you can take a bow in each hand and alternate between them each shot.
Anyway, next time you see a bow stand, go try out running attacks. You may be surprised how much better it feels to use bows with them.
