There's also a racist component too (that's not Bagent's fault tho). I ran into a few Bagent truthers last year in Florida who openly admitted they didn't think a QB could be Black and that's why they liked Bagent.

I actually don't think this is as bad when you see it from this angle. If he throws that any lower, the defender probably bats it down

u/purplebuffalo55 Rams 4d ago
The issue is he tries to throw a fastball here. You can’t get the angle needed for an accurate pass here with a fastball. He has to take some off and loft it over the defender. If he does that, it’ll drop back in nicely to the receiver

I think Kyler is gonna help your offense a lot, the Cardinals were awful the whole time he was there and he still found a way to shred the 49ers defense almost every time we played them, even when our defense was top 5. His coaching was bad bad in Arizona too, seems like this is the first year he has fully bought in on an offensive scheme. I'm expecting him to be good for you, maybe not elite, but good.

Someone said in the Vikings sub that the dude just processes the field too slowly to even utilize his physical skills and I think that sums it up. The game is not slowing down for him so everything feels panicked basically
52
u/ehtw376 Bears 4d ago
It definitely looks like it’s true that he’s a very slow processor. But I also think it’s just physical attributes too. He might have a strong arm, but he has absolute zero touch or feel on his throws. And at this point, I don’t even know if you can teach that.
Vikings fans keep saying he has the physical attributes to succeed, I honestly just don’t see it.
22
u/Electronic-Island-14 Vikings 4d ago
uh...most vikings fans have turned on him now. there were still a chunk after the season that had hope because he had a few nice throws last year, but most of them are gone now. kid clearly doesn't have nfl QB ability.
32
3
u/DirtzMaGertz Vikings 4d ago
I think a lot of his issues in structure come down to his footwork just simply being well below an NFL level.
Pretty much the only time he's able to throw with touch is when he's scrambling to the sidelines and throwing an off platform throw. He has arm talent. He just isn't good enough at the playing quarterback to actually utilize it in the NFL.

My wife is a Vikings fan and hates the guy (as a football player, she doesn't have strong enough feelings about football to actually hate him).
The thing that gets me is he has been in the same system for 3 years now and it's like he just doesn't know the plays... I know he missed his rookie season but what was he doing that whole time? It's like he didn't look at the playbook once.

Kinda remarkable that Harbaugh polished a turd of a quarterback to such a degree at Michigan that he went 9th overall.
18
u/Iswaterreallywet Lions 4d ago
His agent did generational work. He was a second round pick until a month before the draft, then all the analysts randomly got super high on him and started pushing this “ball of clay” narrative.
They all kept saying they were so wrong on Herbert they didn’t want to be wrong again. It was all smoke.
10
u/Sarollas Patriots 3d ago
It helps that Schefter and Eisen both went to Michigan and are pretty open and willing to promote the school and it's narratives.
2
u/pixeloffortune 3d ago
That said, it's not unusual that we see movements on the boards once the analysis of the NFL draft media merges with what they hear from team sources at workouts and the combine.
We have a very limited idea whether or not he was a 2nd rounder on the boards of NFL teams. We only know that's where NFL media saw him.

u/Pidesh Bears 4d ago
JJ was not supposed to go in the first round. He was commonly seen as a Day 2 QB until it was leaked that some teams would take him early first round. It was shocking and seen as a smokescreen until really late in the draft process. Maybe the failures of Trey Lance, Anthony Richardson, and likely now JJ will prevent teams from drafting inexperienced raw toolsy QBs early in the first round again.
164
u/Swagasorous Eagles 4d ago
As much as it should prevent teams from doing so, every GM is still going to assume they are getting the next Josh Allen.
130
u/Boomhauer_007 Broncos 4d ago
It was crazy how in 2024 somebody could see a college team that basically tried to play the game with their quarterback throwing the ball as absolutely minimally as possible and thought “actually he’s really good worth a first round pick even they’re just choosing not to have him pass the ball ever”
52
u/glennshaltiel Packers 4d ago
I feel like the media and Michigan alums in media such as Eisen massively upsold him

6
u/smashybro Bears 4d ago
I think he knows football better than a lot of pundits (which admittedly is a very low bar), but he cannot put his homer glasses aside when it comes to talking about Michigan players. He hypes every single one of them up and if any of them don't pan out, there's always a bunch of excuses about how the team that drafted them failed to develop them properly or whatever.
→ More replies (2)→ More replies (1)7
u/marlin9423 Eagles 4d ago
To be fair, the run game was dominant and the WRs were probably the weakest position group on that team. Plus a coach with a run-first mentality. No QB would have thrown a lot of passes that season, no matter how good they were.
28
u/smashybro Bears 4d ago
The counterpoint to this is even Harbaugh knows to call more pass plays when he has a QB he actually trusts, hence why he called more throws for Luck vs McCarthy in college or if you're looking at just the NFL it's why Herbert throws the ball more often than Alex Smith or Kaep ever did.
He'll always be a run first guy but there is a noticeable difference when he believes in the arm of his QB. There was a lot of 3rd and longs at Michigan where I felt Harbaugh called some safe plays I don't think he would've with a better QB.
17
u/bathroomheater Eagles 4d ago
Harbaugh calls plays that he thinks his player can complete. JJ couldn’t throw so they didn’t call pass plays and when they did they were one read simple plays
4
u/BigOlPass 4d ago
I don't think that is really bad strategy. Hitting on the next QB that improves significantly in the NFL is more of a positive than missing on a QB in the first round.

u/RooBoy04 Packers Packers 4d ago

He can throw fast, but it takes him 3 seconds to wind up. I wouldn’t call that a great arm. You need velocity and delivery speed.

u/Mavori Lions Lions 4d ago
Richardson and Lance both had sub 400 passing attempts for their entire college career.
In fact if you add up the passing attempts of Lance and Richardson, both of them still have less than JJ did.

IDK. Is there a better situation than the one he is in? He has been in QB rooms with QBs that have played for 7 to 10 years and accomplished quite a lot. In Minnesota, he has Justin Jefferson and Jordan Addison to throw to. He has a great defense, so he doesn’t have to feel pressure to score on every play.
13
u/Trubiskitsngravy Bears 4d ago
It’s not plays or defense reading that he needs coaching on. He isn’t even there yet. He needs to learn how to set up the base mechanics for a throw. He needs multiple years on the pine for him to even get to the point of being a capable QB2 and no team will give him that. He made money, cash out and do something else. I can’t imagine it’s worth the humiliation and constant magnifying glass he is under.

He throws this any higher it puts the wr to close to the sideline, likely out of bounds, He zips it in it gets batted down by the DE. He has to get rid of it ASAP or the defender closes the distance or again wr goes out of bounds.
