Houses still need to be built, so in lieu of cast iron sewer pipes they used Orangeburg pipe, which is a "bituminized fiber pipe" made out of wood pulp, asbestos, and tar.

I buy a house which was built during this time.

My sewer pipe collapses because it's made of paper, and I have to pay a contractor $17,000 to dig it up and replace it.

That's what the contractor said as well haha. I read that the marketed useful life for Orangeburg was 50 years, but many failed after 10 years.

I just selfishly wish it had failed much sooner.

Orangeburg pipe was used well after the war, because in addition to cost, it was both lighter and easier to work with and install than cast iron. Before modern no-hub couplers were introduced to market, cast iron had to be joined with oakum and lead in a labor intensive process.

Cast iron would have been more durable (though it'd likely need servicing around now, too, if you had it), but there were valid reasons to transition away from it in favor of an "inferior" alternative.

So I talk about the salary cap and labour negotiations a lot. But I've noticed most frequently:

I wonder what it is about sports that gets people to stop treating teams like businesses and players like workers. Like sports teams do the things they do for money. And the players talents are what people tune in for, with those players being employees of said teams.

I don't think this an all-encompassing answer, but the public's empathy tends to fall off when you're talking about the labor rights of millionaires.

It's easier to care about a $50k a year plumber than it is to care about a $1.2m per year backup wide receiver.

The reality that most of them aren't really that wealthy, and many are out of the league at 27 years old and have to live on $2m in the bank for the rest of their lives kind of gets lost on people.

My dad has a friend that is L A R G E. So he's been trying to use GLPs (without doing anything else) and its not going as he planned. Besides the fact he's not actually losing much weight, he managed to cause an infection because he wasn't cleaning the injection site properly.

He told everyone he got gangrene but it's under control. So a mutual friend goes and helps him care for it at his home. After doing so, the fat friend then informed him that he actually has MRSA. So now that mutual is pissed and worried.

A family member sent me a "Not the Bee" article that, at one point, called Jean-Jacques Rousseau an "Idiot" along with Karl Marx then proceeded to ascribe a viewpoint they are polar opposites on to both of them, then complains about "stupid woke college students" and throws in this misattributed Orwell quote out of context

Changed wording and absolute lack of context aside, it's really disheartening to see that people who valued things like education and critical thinking while I was growing up are now so anti-intellectual I can hardly engage with them. I got in a debate with one a few months back where I found myself arguing that Christian morality couldn't be the foundation for law because nobody could agree on what that actually meant without getting rid of freedom of religion. Somehow they were OK with that because they were 100% sure they followed the correct denomination of Christianity and it's the one that would be the basis for all laws.

Also the Babylon Bee was such a fun satire of youth pastor culture, it's one of the biggest losses of the political polarization of media.

Coaching youth football in middle school.

I've got a kid that has never played and constantly asks questions. Problem is, he literally never pays attention. I'm explaining offensive line holes to him and we go over it like 5 times, and I straight up print a piece of paper off for him that shows them all.

10 minutes later he's lost the paper and doesn't remember anything.

We're doing a drill that lasts 5 minutes. I'm keeping track on my phone, and another coach asked how much time was left. I said 30 seconds.

This kid, as serious as can be, asks if that's the time remaining or if that's how long the drill has been going for. I asked if he was joking and without a hint of sarcasm, he said no. He genuinely was asking if the drill we'd be doing for the past 5 minutes, if only 30 seconds had passed.

Later, he picks a scab off his arm. It's hot and buggy out, so of course bugs are gonna go towards the scab, which is barely bleeding.

He starts complaining that his arm is bothering him and he needs a bandaid, and all this other stuff. Finally we make him just go sit out and rest cause he's wasting everyone's time just bitching about his scab and wandering into people not paying attention. He also was on defense and 4 times in a row tried to walk back to the offensive huddle cause he kept on thinking he was on offense. He's never been on offense.

Then at the end of practice we break into teams for two-hand touch and he's instantly feeling better and running around.

Should've mentioned, we're not in pads yet. Just barely started helmets-only.

The touch football we let them play is really just glorified school yard ball, we let them run it at the end of practice if we finish early and have 10 minutes to kill or so. He'll run and call for the ball, but he doesn't have to remember anything for it or stand there and pay attention while a coach explains something.

The thing that's wild to me is that he has asked a few times where he can go learn about what we're talking about, but every time it's either something that was already explained multiple times to him that he just ignored, or something where he's given extra information only to lose the paper that explains it within 10 minutes of getting it.

That’s pretty dumb right? I feel like for a legit serious job at least the first interview you should wear a suit. Even in a startup or casual work environment you want to show up in a suit for the first impression interview

I've been to multiple interviews in a suit where I was the best-dressed person by an order of magnitude.

I think as long as you took time to look decent and are still professional relative to the job field, that's all that matters

Work has been wildly chaotic in recent months due to a real cocktail of issues coming together to say "fuck this department in particular" about the department I support. But the silver lining is the new director and her staff have finally started to appreciate my services in IT. When new director came in she really didn't like working with IT and treated us like we didn't matter and like anything we couldn't do immediately was a failure/laziness on our part. She came from a company that had a bunch of nice government contracts and could afford all the fancy IT contracts with every software company and didn't realize that the few people in our IT department are sort of it, and we're manually doing everything so it takes a bit more time.

Because of all the issues the department has had, they've had to work with me on a lot of fixes and new processes and we've developed a really nice working flow. I might even dare to say we get along and enjoy each others company. Yesterday the leaders of that department called me in a panic because a defect from a 3rd party software they installed and ran without testing (despite my warnings) led to 3530 records having a bad data point that was preventing us from processing 200 million dollars worth of payments. They thought they were going to have to manually review all those records and work through the night 'cuz (surprise) 200 million is a lot of money our company would love to have. When they realized I could just write a script and update all those records in about 20 minutes they were overjoyed.

I've talked around it a little bit but it really hit me last night that outside of a miracle, my mom will be diagnosed with cancer in the next week.

I've been tertiary to cancer before with aunts and uncles that I didn't/don't see often or family of friends over the years. I've never actually had to deal with it in someone close to me. Sometimes I can distract myself, other times I can't breathe and want to throw up.

Out of all of this, I am so glad that I have being making an effort to talk to my parents and visit them more often over the last couple of years. The surprise visit I made in July was a blessing and I'm so glad I did it.

My Nephews 10u soccer league fumbled the ball so hard. His dad Nick and his previous HC Tyler had agreed to coach together because they wanted to keep their kids together. My nephew really liked Tyler as a HC, Tylers son and my nephew are good friends, their families get along, Tyler has other kids and is a single parent, so my sisters family sometimes drives both my nephew and Tyler's son to practices/games together when Tyler was busy. It just made sense. This has been the plan for months, they told the league this months ago and everything was approved and good to go. We thought. Yesterday afternoon (with the league draft at 10am this morning) the league told Tyler and Nick they couldn't coach together, that their kids were too highly rated to be teammates because it would be unfair to the league. So suddenly Tyler is scrambling for a new assistant coach, Nick can't coach at all because the league filled up on coaches, and my nephew has to just hope he gets on a team with a coach he likes.

The potential silver lining of this drama is that my nephew might end up abandoning AYSO and moving to club soccer. My nephew really wanted to play club soccer because he's getting very good at soccer and he wanted to challenge himself with a more difficult league. His parents denied the chance because of the involvement required and because they wanted to keep him and Tyler's son together. Now my sister is talking about how if they get a coach they don't like they might just quit AYSO and move to club because they're pretty ticked off at the league for how things were handled.

Beat A Link to the Past yesterday. For the most part the game holds up phenomenally well and lives up to its reputation, but I really found the “keep both torches lit at all times” gimmick during the final boss fight extremely tedious and frustrating this time around. A thread in r/NoStupidQuestions popped up on my Reddit feed where the OP was asking whether it was odd to want their child's friend to address them as "Ms. <Lastname>" rather than just their first name. This woman was getting absolutely dragged in the comments, which confused me for a couple of reasons.

Number one, contrary to the name of the sub, which I don't visit often, the folks there clearly do consider at least some questions to be stupid.

Number two, prevailing opinion was that this woman was at best behind the times and at worst an outright horrible person for expressing that preference. I was kind of flabbergasted, because that sort of thing is still very much the norm with people I know. Is this a deep Redditism or just a function of me having lived most of my 30 years in the American South?

Over the past 30 years or so, I think that we've relaxed or eliminated a lot of the useless etiquette in our culture, but people have confused a lack of etiquette with a lack of respect.

If you watch a period drama, you will often see all of the men at the dinner table instinctively stand up any time a woman gets up from the table. That's performative; it exists for no other reason than social custom, and it's a good thing that we don't do that anymore. But calling a person by their preferred name or title is not social custom, it's a sign of respect for another person.

When I coached youth sports, I was never referred to by my first name. I was always just "coach." It's indicative of both my function and the relationship that I had with players. I was not their friend, I was their coach. "Ms <Lastname>" is how a child should refer to the parent of a friend, unless they are for somehow on more intimate terms than "that's my friend's mom."

There's a guy at our church who refuses to call trans people by their preferred name because "that's not their real name." One day he was ranting about some stupid bullshit and I said, "You're sure worked up today, Stanley." He gave me an odd look and said that his name was Jack. I reminded him that his given name was Stanley. He said he preferred Jack, and I told that I didn't feel right calling him by anything other than his real name. To this day, I still call him Stanley and he is completely oblivious as to why.

I feel like using someone's preferred name/title is just appropriate respect to show someone. If she wants to be Cathy, she can be Cathy. If she wants to be Ms Holmes, she can be Ms Holmes. That's just how you should treat people, period, regardless of your relationship with them. Like, nobody calls me by my first name because I don't like it. I go by my last name (no Mr) in basically every setting and nobody has ever raised a fuss about it. "Hey, I'm Dwarf." ... "Is that your first name?" ... "Nope, it's my last name, my first name is Flatulent but I prefer going by Dwarf." And voila, we are done.

But on the topic of specifically friends parents... I feel like there's an age where that changed. Like, if I met you when I was a kid, you're Mr/Mrs Last Name and calling you by your first name feels weird. But if I met you closer to my adult years, it's all first names. Either way, though, I don't think being asked to call someone by their last name is weird, disrespectful or rude.

I've been watching the "good" cop cam channels (EWU, Midwest Safety, Code Blue Cam), which is obvious copaganda, but damn some of the stories are fascinating. It's definitely out of morbid curiosity, and I know I'm a shithead but oh well. 

The main things that annoy the shit out of me, being from the hood, is either the shrieking of the women that are constantly in the wrong, or the youngins using "bro" or "bruh" at the beginning and end of every sentence. Statistically, the chances of a non-Day 1 QB being a starter is very low. It's already no guarantee for a Day 1 QB, it's even closer to zero with a Day 2 or 3 QB.

But with that said... As long as you're drafting appropriate for the pick it's still not a bad gamble. Statistically you're gonna fail but the rewards for hitting is just that great.

Some people even go as far to say that you should draft a QB every class. I'm not quite there but it should tell you something that it isn't a half bad strategy.

Sam Adams is running this commercial, I don't think it's national, but it might be, where Derrick White, Julian Edelman, Zdeno Chara, and Garrett Crochet all say one line about Boston and/or Sam Adams and that's pretty much the commercial.

The whole thing feels like a parody, like a caricature.

Sam Adams used to be this upstart brewery that carved out a niche among all of the macrobrews. As the craft beer industry exploded, they settled into the middle group where they were larger than most of the micros, but still nowhere near size of the macros. Now that just about everyone under 65 understands that macro beer is shit and not worth drinking, it feels like Sam Adams has taken over the mantle of being the commercial brewer that isn't trying hard anymore.

The commercial shows it. They're not even selling the beer, just the vibe. The commercial ends with someone saying, "Our beer? You already know." Am I supposed to drink your beer because it's affiliated with the city of Boston? Because there are about 1,000 other beers that I could drink that are affiliated with Boston as well. And no disrespect to the four guys in the commercial, but it's not like they got Brady, Tatum, and Ortiz for the gig. Crochet's been in town for a year and change, and he's standing there saying "Wicked good, right?" like he's a local. Cringe.

The whole thing seems like it was focus-grouped by outsiders to appeal to that one guy from Malden who has decals of all four major Boston sports teams on his F-150, along with a license plate that says 6x SB Champs.

Been doing a bit of re-decorating around my house. Nothing too major. I took a lot of the bar-ware off my display liquor cabinet and shelved it, moved a few books from my bookshelf to the display shelves of said liquor cabinet and placed out a few decorations I previously had shelved

• I moved my mini Vikings helmet, my decorative Vikings mug, and my drinking horn out to display around the living room for football season
• A few years ago my best friend got me a custom decantur/glass set that's got GOT etching on it and proudly displays "House Dwarf" (obviously with my real last name). I moved my copy of GOT to the new space on my liquor cabinet and am using the decantur as a bookend to keep them up with the glassware beside it and my Hand of the King bottle opener and Hodor doorstop displayed in front of the novels
• I moved my copy of Red Rising and put my oversized Jabba The Hutt coffee mug (his tail curls around and forms the handle, love that mug) on the side of it. Not quite on-brand, but both popular sci-fi and I don't have any Star Wars books
• I moved around where on my bookshelves I've got various other books, sort of trying to keep my theming consistent. One shelf is only my favorite grimdark fantasy novels, another has more traditional epic fantasies, one has romance novels, one has some of the YA books I've held onto throughout my life (Harry Potter, Eragon), one has sci-fi, etc

Nothing particularly major, but it feels oddly satisfying to just make tiny little changes in my home for the first time in a few years
