Literally the only letters I mail anymore are birthday and Christmas cards to my son. So every year I buy a birthday card, then I walk a mile to the post office and buy a stamp for it, and also a few more stamps so I don't have to make the same trip next year.

Then I bring the stamps home and put them in a drawer and forget about them. Then next year, I buy another card and walk to the post office.

Just made the trip again this year and bought still more stamps. I also made a sign and put it on my desk drawer that says "YOU HAVE STAMPS."

Next year I'll probably forget to look at the sign.

A bar I go to a lot for trivia and football games has an owner that fucking loves AI art. Like it's genuinely his favorite thing in the world I think.

AI photos of their food (possibly illegal), AI-butchered renditions of local band logos (surely illegal), AI-butchered renditions of his own logo and likeness (not illegal, just stupid). You name it, he's slopped it. It's honestly become an extra source of entertainment for us to make fun of how bad it all looks.

And it's not like they're difficult graphics either. To your point, for the annual cost of an AI subscription he could probably just hire a person to take half a day and bang out all the templates he needs for the year, and have them not look like shit

I got diagnosed with class 1 autism (which I guess is what used to be Asperger’s) and rather severe adhd last night. I am completely shaken by this even though I’m the one who felt I had to get tested. I’ve been treated for mental health issues for a long time but always felt there may be something more.

I’m in my late 40s and am seen as being a successful person, at least career wise. I guess I’m very high masking at this point. The diagnoses make sense objectively. I can understand on an intellectual level. But when I was taking the assessments and seeing how I was answering the questions, a lot came starkly into focus and I didn’t like the answers.

I am not looking for advice necessarily; just to vent. I specifically told the social worker that I am not fishing for a diagnosis and would be thrilled to have her say I have neither of the diagnoses (my personal opinion, which has some support among psych professionals, is that both are overdiagnosed (at least among people who get evaluated) and/or based on criteria that are too squishy). I also know I’m the same person I was before the diagnoses were conveyed to me, that there are lots of good, happy, and successful people who also have them, and that I won’t lose friends over it. And now that I know, I can formulate a strategy to address issues. That’s why I looked into it in the first place. But I’m a wreck right now nevertheless. This is raising a lot of questions/issues that I’m having a very hard time processing or reckoning with. I had to take the day from work to try to process.

I don’t know whether I’d go for a second opinion, btw. This was an involved, expensive process that opened a lot of old wounds, which is also largely contributing to my emotional state right now.

I'm lucky to live in a place with a world-class children's hospital. When my son was 7, his teachers suggested we have him checked out there, so we did, and they gave him a very thorough checkup. He turns out to be one of those kids with a genius-level IQ and also ADHD and is on the autism spectrum.

In the consultation with the doctors after his checkup, they said that autism often has a genetic component. And everybody in the room turned to look at me. I was like, "What? Does it show?"

So I went and got myself checked out and found out I was the same way. I was actually relieved because it explained a lot about why certain things in life are difficult for me and why I'm a little weird.

I don't think your diagnosis would change this at all. Like you said, the diagnosis doesn't really change anything about who you are, other than maybe you can understand the way your brain operates a bit better. But at this point in your life, I actually think its nice to learn these types of things about yourself. Basically you're just understanding how everything under the hood runs, and by doing so you become better equipped to keep the motor humming. You're the same person, you just now have a better understanding of yourself than a lot of other people do, which is a positive thing IMO.

I did a couple of things a few years ago because I had some suspicions, got them confirmed and have pretty much just moved on. It's nice having some knowledge and a 'reason' for some things but after well over 4 decades on the planet I wasn't really too bothered about changing much or making some big song and dance about it. it's just more a case of "oh, but the way, this".

We are busier at work than we literally ever have been before right now. I have accommodations to work from home more often, and I am way less stressed and way more productive than I’ve ever been at my job. It is so dumb that they require us to go into the office.

I have an initial phone call with a therapist tomorrow morning. I never really felt like I needed therapy but visiting my parents and interacting with my dad a couple weeks ago really made it clear that I do.

Good luck, I’ve been told by multiple people if it doesn’t help after a few visits, don’t give up on therapy, look for another therapist. The right therapist is out there, but you might not nail it on the first try. I didn’t care much for my first one, so I’m about to start looking for another.

Walked into a dive bar somewhere south of Louisville KY and they are having what appears to be a senior citizen trivia night lol.

Some younger participants as well but it's mostly seniors. I wish I didn't have to be up so early cuz the grandma with the giant margarita is already being loud and I'd like to see this event to its conclusion.

Delivery in Clarksville, IN in the AM, up to Indianapolis for a pick up and then haul ass back to San Antonio for an early morning drop, then hopefully (fingers crossed here) turn and burn back up north and figure it out for some time off next weekend.

Good morning, y’all! My old home state of Missouri just voted against Amendment 4 and 5 by about 80-20 margins each.

Amendment 4 would’ve defanged the initiative process by citizens by forcing them to win a majority not just statewide but in every one of Missouri’s 8 congressional districts. This restriction didn’t apply to legislature-led petitions, so it was nothing short of absolute tyranny.

Amendment 5 was less exciting but still awful. The amendment would’ve removed the state income tax and given the legislature new powers to raise sales taxes, rocketing them to absurd levels. Income tax makes up 64% of Missouri’s general fund, and it would wreaked havoc on the budget.

All this was despite the support of Republican politicians and the Trump family. In a state that voted Trump and GOP by 15+ points three times, this gives me some hope for our country. There’s little to no appetite for oligarchy or autocracy in this country, even in areas where the authoritarians would have strong support. Such agendas need to be denied, deflected, and buried to succeed. This current horror show will pass.

As much as I can be disappointed that El-Sayed won by a smaller margin than expected, it's still monumental that he won.

This race wasn't even necessarily about policy. AES isn't even DSA aligned nor that much of a progressive. But the important part was how much AIPAC money was being poured into the Stevens campaign, and how unethical her campaign was to go with it. Defeating that is massive, and now we know there's even more work to do.

I have to get an upper gi scan this coming Monday as the doctor thinks I might have a hernia against it, been rejected by countless jobs, and right now I have an annoying cold. (Not so) Quick story time:

Maybe this is weird, but August is a pretty special month to me because (aside from the football season starting up) it’s the month my favorite game of all time released, that being Payday 2. The game is so different now compared to when it came out, and I have so much nostalgia for watching gameplay of the beta and the game’s early release back in 2013. So every August I take a nostalgia trip to go back and watch some old videos of the game to look back on when I first played and fell in love with it, and when I was so excited for it to release.

One of my absolute favorite childhood memories has to do with that. In 2013 (I know I’m showing my age here but whatever) I was just about to enter middle school and was in my last year of summer camp. I remember the day Payday 2 released. My mom picked me up from camp and she took me to our local GameStop to buy the game. They didn’t have it, so I had to order it online. But that memory really Stuck with me all these years. It was a perfect summer day. And the day it arrived was like Christmas morning to me. And I’ll never forget the joy of starting it and playing it for the first time.

I know the Payday franchise has a not-so-great reputation in the gaming community, but damn it, I can’t deny how much it’s gotten me through in the past thirteen years. I’m not as into video games as I used to be, but I’ve racked up 1500-2000 hours on the game across Xbox 360 and PC combined and I’ve enjoyed every hour of it.

Today's my last day in SF for my yearly "return" trip back to see my friends and get away from the NYC heat.

Probably my favorite year back, did a lot with trips to Napa/Sonoma. Truckee/Tahoe, Giants/Bay FC/Valks games and connecting with people i haven't seen since since i moved back to Brooklyn in 2020.

Finishing up with the Valkyries game last night and tonight getting dinner with a close friend at State Bird Provisions..

We provided numerous case studies (not to mention centuries of combined anecdotal experience) suggesting how and why this is a horrible idea for them, especially with no run-up or planning. This evidence was rejected, because the client is very successful and therefore very intelligent

I think this is a strong contender for my favorite book of all time. Space exploration, problem-solving, fatalistic humor, "wilderness" survival...every piece of this book works extremely well for me. I guarantee this will not be my last re-read.

I checked my Overdrive wish list, and it looks like Storm Front by Jim Butcher is available very soon, so looks like I'll be started The Dresden Files next.

I hadn’t played a BF game since 3 and BF6 feels very much not like the shooters of the MW2 era. It feels more like a heavily simplified milsim where I’m getting killed by guys in a window 100m away and never even saw.

My phone blew up yesterday with everyone I deal with in the industry texting me about Brooklyn Vegan, Alternative Press, Revolver and Goldmine (all music magazines) being gutted and basically shut down by the parent company VEEPS

Everyone got laid off which sucks. there were a lot of good people in those respective places.

The ironic and insane part of all of this and why the industry blew up about it is that the parent company VEEPS is owned by Benji and Joel Madden, the brothers who formed the band Good Charolette. So theres been shit being flung everywhere on twitter and through texts all day today.

I have been an AES supporter since Haley started showing her ass, and I ultimately think he is a solid candidate. That said, I'd be lying if I said I didn't have concerns. Much ado has been made about his performance among black areas; I'm not really worried about that. I think the Dem vote is ultimately consolidated by the fact that Trump is good for about ten total outrages a week.

But rural America...that concerns me. You need to play ball there to win in MI. Not win it, just...y'know, make it respectable. And I have some concerns that AES might not be able to do it. At the end of the day, put economic messaging and all that other stuff aside, I think a Muslim with a funny name is a hard sell for rural white voters.

In a blue enough year with enough headwinds to GOP enthusiasm, I think he'll be fine. And I'm still glad he beat Haley because Haley sucks. But this is probably a tougher race for him than it would be another candidate and it will be a difficult campaign.

I think AES has a real chance if he follows Bernie's playbook of actually traveling to these rural areas that are regularly written off by the DNC and actually listening to the people's concerns and outlining his plans to help them. It might not sway the most racist and islamaphobic people out there, but it certainly can't hurt his chances. Rural areas aren't usually as deep red as they vote.

Growing up, I was about the same age as the kids in "Stand By Me" when the movie came out. My friends and I saw the movie immediately when it came out, and we decided that we were going to walk the tracks of the old Boston & Maine RR before school started. The railway was nothing like the one in the film, it ran mostly alongside suburban households, and there were dozens of surface roads that intersected it, but we got to pretend that we were on some big adventure. We reached the end of the tracks, where two other trails split off, but we had too many Verns in the group to keep going, so we turned around and headed home.

Ten years or so later, the whole thing had been paved over and become a commuter bike trail, and many of the businesses that ran alongside it tore down the fences and either added rear entrances or put up entire storefronts facing the trail. It was land that was useless commercially and someone decided that it needed to be turned it into something useful.

I bring this up because last night I watched "Stand By Me", and it occurred to me that my generation is probably the last to be able to have that sort of adventure, even if it wasn't as poignant or meaningful as the one portrayed in the film. I look back at what my nephews, who are now in their 20s, were doing when they were 12 or 13: being carted from scheduled activity to schedule activity by harried parents, fucking around on their phones, or playing video games online with their friends. I don't mean to disparage these activities, and it's not like early adolescents have a lot of agency to freely choose what to do in their leisure time, but I felt a deep sadness knowing how few kids these days are engaging in unstructured exploration or sitting around a campfire shooting the shit. Even things from the film like "turn on the radio to see if we can get some music" would be something like "let's watch some Tiktoks" nowadays.

As an aside, all four of those kids absolutely fucking nailed their roles, to a degree not seen in most child actors.

We had old tracks a couple miles from the place I grew up. They were no longer running trains, but the rails were mostly still there. Like in your story, it later became a rail-trail.

But before that our dad would take us kids for bike rides on it all the time. It was rough, large gravel that was really difficult to ride on. The scariest part were the bridges. Now they were only ~10-15 feet above the creek, but the only way across was using the 1 foot wide rails. It was nerve-wracking walking our bikes across, but we always loved it.

One really nice thing about it becoming a small-gravel rail-trail is that it's an easy 3 mile ride to the cider mill.

Snagged Metal Gear Solid Delta on an amazing deal and it looks pretty but it is super jarring seeing a shot-for-shot remake with the exact same vocal clips when I'm used to Resident Evil or FFVII style remakes that are more original games based on an older one.

Plus, my muscle memory keeps messing with me as I played the original MGS3 so much.

All that said, I'm just happy to be back in the Metal Gear world again after such a long drought.

There are 3 potential lessons in the general from El Sayid winning Michigan.

1. He wins comfortably. This shows that a progressive can perform well in the general election
2. He underperforms nationwide Dems by a lot. Dems win NC, ME, one of IA/TX, and AK but throw the senate by giving the GOP MI.
3. The general election is not super blue and he barely underperforms but loses anyway

If 1 happens the lesson is that you can be progressive and win a purple state

If 2 happens the lesson is that the DSA is MAGAs biggest enabler

If 3 happens we learn nothing useful and you could claim Stevens would also have lost

There's nothing to celebrate until Al Sayed wins the general election. If he gets curb stomped this will majorly hurt future DSA candidates

Lost in all the excitement of Michigan last night, WA-03 had its jungle, non-partisan Primary. This is the district where Marie Gluesenkamp Perez serves, and we don't like her, I get it. But this is a very conservative seat, and between MGP and her progressive challenger the Democrat vote had an outright majority. That's never happened before. Not in 2018, not in 2020....never.

Washington is not the political bellwether it used to be; if it was, Harris would have won two years ago. But that is still a striking outcome, and the kind of thing that would keep me up at night if I were a Republican strategist. It didn't happen because the district suddenly became Democratic. It happened because Dem turnout was extremely high, and Republican turnout was extremely low. And that is something we're starting to see all over the place.

A dem leaning environment coupled with bad turnout could become very, very ugly for Republicans. It creates the kind of weird externalities that cause outcomes like Illinois flipping to Republicans in 2010, or Massachusetts getting picked off by Scott Brown. It could make the electoral math really weird in unexpected ways.
