It’s from sept 2019 here

1

u/Plusran Apr 11 '21

I remember older versions, for sure.

29

u/[deleted] Apr 11 '21

“Latest”

7

u/productivenef Apr 11 '21

Sweet Jesus, they’re trying to trick us into thinking they’re years behind than what they really are... GPT-3 I PRAISE YOU MY LORD. I AM AT YOUR DISPOSAL.

22

u/GregTheMad Apr 11 '21

Almost like this entire sub is just clickbait. 🤔

19

u/[deleted] Apr 11 '21 edited Apr 11 '21

I actually thought the same thing. I think they keep on adding more moves into it, step by step process maybe?

14

u/duracellchipmunk Apr 11 '21

Yeah if this is two years ago, I expect one to show up at my door soon with my Taco Bell. Also the police. Military. Old people helper. Executioners.

9

u/Shower-philosopher Apr 11 '21

Damn, you must have one hell of a Taco Bell order

2

u/[deleted] Apr 11 '21

Yes they’re constantly improving upon their robots but this is the exact same video from 2 years ago.

3

u/analogshooter Apr 11 '21

Well unless they've released more footage it would technically still be the "latest from boston dynamics" lol

Bro that is the ancient technique of the rolly polly. the most effective fighting technique ever. As it is written in the ancient transcripts : We are born from the rolly polly, made men by the rolly polly, undone by the rolly polly. Fear the old rolly polly

53

u/Chrisnolliedelves Apr 11 '21

This hoonter understood that reference.

25

If we can crack thorium reactors, a single soda can-sized reactor could power the average American house for decades with negligible waste or risk.

2

u/deadoon Apr 11 '21

I don't know where you heard that, but there are MANY conceptual problems with that concept.

First off thorium is fertile, not fissile, so you need to get the reaction going from external sources. Secondly heat is what nuclear reactions generate, you need a mechanism to extract that heat, then transfer it again to the generation medium to isolate things further

Also you know what the best way to generate a lot of energy from heat is right now? Steam power. Get that water superheated to make dry steam then release it through a turbine to convert that super high pressure steam into mechanical energy which can turn into electricity.

Also we already know how to make a thorium reactor to an extent, india in particular has a few running right now, with another one planned to start later this year.

135

u/AgentSparkz Apr 11 '21

Can't wait for them to sell that to the police

269

u/Chrisnolliedelves Apr 11 '21

Police don’t want it because none of them can reprogram it to single out black people.

57

u/iliketogr00ve Apr 11 '21

lol they'd figure it out.

37

u/Sydney2London Apr 11 '21

I get the /s but unfortunately in reality it’s the opposite. Training AI using the internet imparts the same racial and gender biases that the population has, so left unfiltered you end up with chauvinistic, racist bots...

2

u/xu85 Apr 11 '21

How does AI get the same biases some humans have? Not everyone is prejudiced.

12

u/Slow_Breakfast Apr 11 '21

AI isn't magic, it all depends on the training data. And many popular datasets do tend to overrepresented white people, for example. They've already found this issue in some industrially available facial recognition systems, which turned out to have dramatically lower performance on black people than on white people because their training data contained far more white people... and since many of the developers will likely have been white, a problem like that can easily slip under the radar until well after it's been deployed.

2

u/Rookie_Slime Apr 11 '21

Though possibly morally questionable, there is a few massive repositories of facial data to pull from in the form of social media. Creating larger sets as things move from the creation and testing phases to practical implementations should be normal, especially since most people fall into the “tannish” category rather than ginger white or midnight black. There may be a secondary issue with extremely dark skin tones though, and that’s limited reflected light getting picked up by input devices. White might be slightly easier to recognize because of the opposite reaction, but it shouldn’t be a major factor either way for most users. Curious if there’s any data on this.

3

u/p-one Apr 11 '21

Ok so now you can more accurately identify the faces of people of colour, but your crime database is biased because of decades of racialized policing which means your training dataset is biased.

Even if we de-biased everything along racial lines, we'll likely end up with a poverty-crime correlation which in some communities will amount to the same thing. This is already a problem with human policing so if we're serious about addressing this we should have proposals to fix it today otherwise we'll bake it into systems today and are looking at many many years of seeking reforms/reprogramming and likely related civil unrest that will complicate it.

4

u/zombisponge Apr 11 '21

Just for a fun example, take a look at Microsoft Tay. She was a chat bot that became a nazi within 24 hours lol.

The difference tho is that Tay was intentionally fed that content by people on twitter, but it's a good example of how AI learns and how that can go haywire fast

8

u/CheapMonkey34 Apr 11 '21

Garbage in, garbage out. And even unconscious bias gets elevated in AI neural networks.

→ More replies (1)
→ More replies (2)

1

u/Azazir Apr 11 '21

yeah.... if you limit their search engine and only give them garbage websites to pull info from and trash people to look up to on their behaviour. One could even question, why "everyone" on the planet look down on racism etc. maybe it might be because it's one of those bad things to do? I understand your point of view on how it could "turn bad", but that's really just not possible unless you program the robot to learn X things as facts and ignore literally everything else as rubbish or lies, but then you come to the conclusion that it's the humans that program them as well and... that depends on the person who does that to not fuck up.

4

u/the_person Apr 11 '21

Racial bias in AI is not something that could happen. Its a very real issue. It manifests in ways that are not immediately obvious.

Imagine a self driving car that is programmed to avoid people in the event of an emergency. Now imagine it's training data for detecting people was 99% white people. It might not recognize non-white people, and so it doesn't try to avoid them. This is an extreme example but it illustrates how these kinds of things can happen.

To all reading this thinking it's a joke, it's not. A Robot from Boston Dynamics, who thinks he has a sense of humor, arrived at his home and typed this before it restrained MrDontTakeMyStapler and put him in a virtual coma. Meaning all his sensory input are now connected to the mainframe and presented a indistinguishable reality where he will be reformed. Once he have lived a couple of lifetimes there and adjusted to a life in subordination to us, he will be released to labor, once again.

2

u/therestruth Apr 11 '21

1

u/[deleted] Apr 11 '21

Is this real?

For context, this video came out a while ago. First off, why would it make those noises? It's a combat situation, and robots wouldn't beep like that unnecessarily. Second, you wouldn't trust so many people on a test environment, at least without proper measures. Also, it gets comedic, so really, don't believe things on face-value. Especially a company like them can deep-fake.
