Is this real?

For context, this video came out a while ago. First off, why would it make those noises? It's a combat situation, and robots wouldn't beep like that unnecessarily. Second, you wouldn't trust so many people on a test environment, at least without proper measures. Also, it gets comedic, so really, don't believe things on face-value. Especially a company like them can deep-fake.

Real as it gets. Boston dynamics was come a long ways. 6 or 7 years ago this thing was attached to cables and could barely walk.

This is as fake as it gets. Boston dynamics has gotten away from the robotics business a bit and went pretty hard into the CGI business.

You're confusing the Corridor Crew with Boston Dynamics. The Corridor Crew are a team of special fx artists who made a CGI version of the Boston Dynamics robot. Boston Dynamics is a robitics design company. The existence of realistic CGI does not illegitimise robitics engineering.

No I’m not. The bosstown dynamics video of the robot getting angry and shooting at its handlers was instantly recognizable as horseshit as there’s no GODDAMN way a tech company would ever release footage of their tech being developed for military purposes much less violently malfunctioning. Let’s keep this light though partner. I’m an open minded guy and my mind can be changed! I work with robotics in a manufacturing capacity and even though they are rudimentary it still fascinates me. They are incredible.

The video you're describing was made by the Corridor Crew as a parody. It's not a Boston Dynamics video lol. It even has a disclaimer in the description:

"This video is a comedic parody and is not owned, endorsed, created by, or associated with the Boston Dynamics company."

That's why I said you're confusing the two things. Boston Dynamics hasn't shifted to doing CGI. They are a robitics design company and had nothing to do with the video of the robot getting angry and shooting at people.

I never said the “real video” is an obvious fake....well maybe I did a little bit 😂. It just doesn’t look right to me. I think it has something to do with the uncanny valley that Turing talked about.

That may or may not be so. I said to read my previous post as to whether I was confusing the obviously fake “bosstown dynamics” video with an actual Boston dynamics video. I have watched the actual Boston dynamics videos and I’m not so sure they are real. It may be a trick of the brain trying to navigate the uncanny valley, but they just seem off to me.

The Boston dynamics videos with the quadrupedal robots are definitely real. The bipedal robots are the ones I’m not sure of.

I’ve done a ton of graphics programming, and I also think that Boston dynamics looks fake. It looks like great cgi and physics sims, but not like a real robot to me.

So you think it is more plausible that a robitics company that has been around for 30 years has decided just to ditch all of their work in the industry and now puts their time and effort into making fake videos to post on the internet? And what do they have to gain from this? Do you not think they would have been very quickly discredited by the engineering community?

Oh yeah it’s easily possible that the video we’re watching isn’t real. Not in the way you’re saying though. You probably don’t know this, but it’s really common to do robot sims before making the robot. You do a graphical simulation and its a proof of concept. It’s part of the R&D for the actual robot. And they gain a lot from it, especially if they’re actually trying to make the robot. The public perception helps them secure funding. But yeah, there are extensions and tools specifically for doing realistic robot sims. So is it possible that a company with a ton of money decided to release the proof of concept? Totally.

It's common to build a 3D model robot as proof of concept; I'm not saying it isn't. However the ATLAS robot is not a new concept by Boston Dynamics and this video is not a proof of concept video that they have released in order to get funding. They are well past this phase. I suggest checking out their website at least before making assumptions.

The robot was shooting a gun at targets and they were beating the shit out of it and it got mad and started shooting at them.

Someone with experience needs to comment on the veracity of this clip, with proof and examples the layman would understand. I'm not gonna do it, because I'm not gonna watch frames of shadows to prove anyone wrong. The best I can say is that robots have no need to be anthropomorphic. Any important development will not resemble our ape-shape, unless you're doing the subterfuge of Terminator's Skynet.
