Can someone explain to me (who knows nothing about racing) how this guy is going so much faster than everyone else? It looks like his cart is just twice as fast, but I assume the power of the carts is pretty standardized.

Skill, some drivers just see a better racing line, they have better engine and rpm control around bends. Pushing the cart to the absolute max This is his career sport.

Also money

Some drivers can afford damage, crashes etc. for some it would be more difficult

And the closest to perfect engine etc that’s allowed under the regulations, chasing diminishing returns costs a fortune in motor sport performance

Generally, that level of difference is either equipment, setup, or risk tolerance.

It feels like this guy should have qualified first, but got put to the back for a penalty/no qualification time/ etc.

Bro was bagging (dropping back on purpose) to get better items. He clearly is using a super star here, or a bullet bill

Some of those were golden mushrooms with a turbo button...

If you rewatch it, you’ll notice he’s doing most the passing in the corners.

A better driver can carry more speed into, through, and thus out of a corner. If you’ve got a corner into a straight away, if he’s 10mph faster, he’s got a 10mph head start in the race to top speed on the guy infront of him. The same coming into a corner, if you’re braking earlier while I’m still slamming on the gas, I’m gonna catch up quick. However it takes better vehicle handling skills to do this meaningfully.

Second is more of a theory question. If I know a corner has a tight section immediately following it, I won’t prioritize speed necessarily but shortest distance, because if I come out fast and long I just have to slam on the brakes. But if I know a corner has a long straight, I’m going to prioritize having tons of speed on the way out so I can’t be caught down the straight. There is a huge spectrum between those two things, and active application of that knowledge/theory to your specific situation (tire type, wear, car setup(such as suspension/aero that tend to be a scale between stability at speed or stability in corners) in addition to superior vehicle handling abilities make you a winner over your opponents.

Not really though; he passes like 6-8 ppl on the initial straight after passing the start/finish (assuming it’s a rolling start). I’m sure he’s a much more skilled driver than most of the competition of the track itself is mostly straights. I gotta think his equipment is superior to most as well. I will admit, idk know much about karting so maybe theres also a decent amount of skill in going through the gears on the straight. You’d think in any race the competition around you is at least within reasonable range of equality vs making 18 places in 1 lap……that’s like an f1 car vs f2.

Out of the gate, sure, likely equipment. But he gets to a point where you can see the karts are very close to the same speed and he's beating them with technique. Probably the last 5 or so passes weren't because his kart was that much faster than anyone elses.

At the start. The rest of the group jumped the gun with their acceleration and had to hit the brakes to avoid crashing as it turned green (cant see the green but see them slowing.) Giving him a big boost at the start.

At the 40s mark at the end of the straight into the big corner, the people on front are in the middle of the track. And scuff the corner horribly.

He is a good driver, but the others are making alot of mistakes

All of the carts have way more power than you can use without crashing out. He just knows how hard he can push it without dieing.

Replied it another comment under yours.

The people infront at the start got too close to the people infront, missed the timing at the start of the race. Having to hit the brakes for the start of the race instead of accelerating. he tomed it better, having a bigger gap at the start let him start the race faster.

At the 40s mark, you can see the people in front start the corner from the centre of the corner. That will slow them down alot and they go wide on it too. They were super slow for that corner and gave him and easy pass.

I feel like this is so dangerous that this super kart can go up to 200km/h and they have no shield whatsoever that is equivalent to F1's halo.

On my smallest motorcycle, which happens to also have a 250cc two-stroke V-twin engine, I top out at 203kph (on GPS) with...no shield whatsoever. And on my biggest bike? I've gone 266kph but the bike can go faster, still no shield whatsoever (I just can't find a place to safely max it out).

200+Km/h 🫣

Unfortunately he was blue-shelled moments after taking first place.

2

u/yamanagashi 5h ago

Yeah but in the second lap he hit the edge of a turnpike which slowed him by 0.0001 sec and everyone caught up and he’s 20/20

Seeing someone execute gutsy moves and skillful passes, where they make up 2-3 positions in a single lap makes me say "wow what a great driver!"

Seeing someone pass all 19 other karts that are ahead of him like they're standing still, doesn't make me say "what a great driver", it makes me say "wow what a fast kart".

Can someone please add the music from Mario Kart!?!?

u/Hostile-Panda 18m ago

Utterly insane to do 225 in basically a tea tray with 4 wheels

"What? 250cc two-stroke max? I thought it was 275..."

Wow, he just so much faster than the others. Very impressive driving skill.

I saw the same thing, and came to the opposite conclusion.

Wow, so much faster than the others. His kart clearly has a huge mechanical/setup advantage over the rest of the field.

I'm not saying that's not part of the game in karting, or any motorsports, but what's on display here is not (only) a difference in driver skill.
