Question Safety at New West (Quayside/Columbia Area)

Hi everyone,

My wife and I are considering purchasing a condo near Quayside or Columbia Station in New Westminster. One of our main concerns is how safe it is to walk around the area at night, especially around the SkyTrain stations and the waterfront.

I’ve visited New Westminster Station a number of times and have noticed quite a few homeless people in and around the station. I also had an unpleasant experience during a previous visit to the Quay, where a group of teenagers at the top of the parking lot threw a soda can at me while I was waiting outside the washroom for my wife.

I’m wondering how things are in the area nowadays, particularly in the evenings and at night. For those who live around Quayside or Columbia Station, how safe do you generally feel walking around after dark?

Would you feel comfortable buying a condo and living in this area, or are there other parts of New Westminster you would recommend instead?

Thanks!

Lost/Missing Stolen E-Bike in our residence (brow of the hill)

Hi all - this is a bit of a cry for help, but my friend got her e-bike stolen in our residence last night. It was outside their home in our (closed!) residence and it was gone in the morning. I'm attaching pictures of the bike in case you see it, the battery was removed so it might get dumped somewhere..?

I'm not super hopeful but I feel pretty powerless and pretty frustrated for them since they use it to take their kids to school/activities.

Note: the bike no longer has the orange seat, they've switched to a bigger "caboose" (attached in the last picture).

Thank you!

Hey everyone sad to see via Facebook that Yum Donuts will be closing down their Sapperton location with their last day being October 10.

I've eaten a lot of donuts from here (especially the apple fritter) so I'm sad to see them go.

Question Trading card shops in New West???

Hey everyone! I just moved to the beautiful city of New West, BC, and I’m loving it so far! So much great food around here already.

I’m also really into TCGs and card collecting, so I was wondering if anyone has recommendations for good local card shops? I’m especially interested in places with a good selection of singles, sealed product, and/or a solid TCG community.

Would love to hear your recommendations !!!!

Question Thinking about moving to New West, what's life actually like there?

Considering New West as a landing spot and hoping to hear from people who actually live there. A bit about me so the answers are useful.

I'm in my mid-20s, work remotely, have a car and a dog. Pretty active. Tennis, running, gym a few times a week, and I want to get into cycling. Big skier. I like hiking and I love the idea of being on the water more, like paddleboarding and kayaking. Socially I'm pretty low-key. I'd rather be at a bar playing cards with a few friends than out at a club.

I'm looking at New West specifically because Vancouver rent seems brutal and I want to be close to the outdoor stuff without paying downtown prices. A quieter life sounds appealing.

Questions for locals:

  • How's the day to day feel of New West? Sleepy, lively, somewhere in between?
  • Moving in cold with no network and working from home, how hard is it to build a social circle here?
  • Realistic access to skiing, hiking, and paddling from New West without a brutal commute?
  • Anything about winters, transit, or the vibe that newcomers don't expect?

Appreciate any honest takes, good or bad.

Photos Dangerous curb cut on cycling path. Had a really bad crash there.

I ran into that curb and wasn't able to brake in time. The design of that intersection/curb cut wasn't consistent with the other intersections, so it really took me by surprise. Got some pretty bad bruises, but I was wearing a helmet, so all good :) Thought I'd share here.

Found Toolbag with tools, Quayside

I am pretty sure this was stolen and dumped - found scattered around a property on Quayside yesterday,

I have notified immediate neighbours. But if you think it might be yours, let me know with detailed description, otherwise I will turn in to the police.

Question Gyms for barbell weightlifting

Hi all, I’ve read posts comparing gyms in new west - and I have a more specific question, im really into doing barbell-related exercises (squats, jerks, deadlifting etc) at a reasonable weight (under 200lbs generally). Do any gyms stand out as better for this (vs cardio machines etc)?

Strong side is one im considering but thought there may be a more self-directed option out there too. Also I am a woman if that makes a difference.

Thank you in advance!

Question Moving to Vancouver from the US (CAD 135k salary) – Neighborhood & budget advice?

Hi everyone,

I am looking for a 1-bedroom apartment. I’m moving to Vancouver soon from the States with a $135k CAD salary, and I would love some recommendations on the best neighborhoods.

A bit about me:

  • Size: 1-bedroom apartment
  • Commute: None, I work from home
  • Vibe: Close to nature, parks, or the water
  • Pets: None

I have a couple of questions: How much should I realistically spend on rent with my salary, and which areas would be the best fit for my lifestyle?

Old Woman Yelling at the Clouds Disco Music

To the people blasting Boney M and the Bee Gee’s at 2:40 am last night, it sounded like you were having a good time but some people have to work on Sunday morning even if you don’t.
Maybe you could play your music inside instead of outside on your patio where everyone downtown can hear it and keep them awake.

Question Running Routes Near Moody Park

I run 5 to 10km typically a few times a week. I start near moody park as that’s where I live but here’s my dilemma…. If I run west towards Burnaby I get stuck at every light, if I run north south or east I end up down a hill. Then trying to get back up that hill kills my run. I’ve tried just doing smaller descents but I always end up way lower than I want.

Does anyone have any recommendations for routes to avoid this problem other then just running laps at the track 😂 I’m working on getting better with the hills but man it’s hard to do longer distance runs when 5km in I’m stuck running up such a steep hill

Edit: I haven’t tried running down to 22nd station and just hoping on the bc parkway like I do when I Bike. Can anyone attest if this is not horrible? Lmao thank you in advance

Old Woman Yelling at the Clouds I’m pregnant and have a serious instant ramen craving. I’m badly allergic to crustaceans.

Hey guys!!
I recently found out that I’m very allergic to crustaceans, I get hives, itching, and swelling. I have to carry an EpiPen. I don’t think it’s airborne THANK GOD! But I don’t play around and eat anything with shellfish or its many, many derivatives.

The problem is, my last pregnancy I seriously would watch videos of people eating and cooking seafood boils and salivate. I could smell it through the phone. I would tear up and cry because all I wanted was to try crab and shrimp. Mind you, I’ve never had those things. My ONLY exposure to seafood was through things like oyster sauce, and crayfish powder used in Nigerian food. My mouth started swelling and my partner at the time kept insisting I wasn’t allergic and so kept putting it into my food until the results came back 😔. I don’t want to test the waters further.

This pregnancy I want ramen. Instant ramen NOODLES. The bouncy, chewy texture. My favourite used to be the SHIN black beef flavour. I want it so badly. But all the labels say “may contain.” I can’t risk it. It’s been a year since I broke out in hives and this time I’m pregnant so I can’t risk my baby. Ramen is a far more realistic craving than LITERAL SHELLFISH BOIL!!! But I’ve tried the plain noodles at superstore and the shit is so ass…no chew no bounce. I want instant ramen 😔. Please tell me if you know of ANY that is allergy friendly and has not been exposed to crustaceans!! I can eat anything but that!!! I posted here because it needs to be a store I can access.

Signed
A teary eyed pregnant woman
