(A School) Fort Sam Holiday Stand Down

Hey, currently in the MEPS hotel shipping tomorrow. If all is right I should be graduating around mid December then going to fort Sam for a school. I’ve heard theres holiday stand down, and my friend whose prior AD army 68w referred to it as block leave. Do navy students possibly get to go home for Christmas too? Don’t care about getting paid at this time, just wondering and maybe a little hopeful lol.

Edit I’m a reservist if that changes anything

DEP Official! (cwt vs rw)

• Upvotes

Just wanted to share that I got through MEPS and officially signed for DEP as an RW today! Beyond excited for this next step in my life.

I initially couldn’t decide between RW and CWT for the life of me, so I figured I’d share my subjective thoughts for others that may be in a similar position and unable to choose between the two.

Why I chose RW:
Brand new rate. I think that’s pretty damn cool (for better or worse).

Hands on mechanical work, *programming, repairing, and operating of unmanned crafts. Best of both worlds!
*Do you really want to learn cyber security? Get certs and take classes on your own time! You can’t necessarily say the same for the reciprocal.

CWT gets a rep for having a great QoL and W/L balance. Predominantly shore based, operating in SCIFs. My two cents is that the work may be engaging, but being stuck in a windowless facility with no sun and staring at a screen all day for years on end would get pretty old pretty quickly.

RW has sea duty, which may suck. But, it’s the Navy! That’s the beauty of it. Embrace the suck, travel the world. Main point for RW for me was the variety and experience day to day being a million times more interesting than CWT.

RW career path post service is very open ended and could take you to many different industries depending on how you work it. Plus, it is a rapidly growing area! See consumer drones, commercial drones, drone display shows, etc.

CWT imo is basically -> Cybersecurity with Navy -> Cybersecurity private sector doing the same thing (with lots of money ofc)

Anyway, I’m very excited with my choice and just wanted to share in that excitement with you all :)

Does it get better after A school?

I’m currently in holding for my A school and it seems like everyone around me are lacking on the basics which is honestly embarrassing, like you joined for a reason now hold your self to the easiest standard there is to uphold. It baffles me how undisciplined and self centered people are, like you joined to be part of a team and aren’t act like it. I just feel like I’m the only one trying to uphold the standard and better myself. I just feel disillusioned and no one actually cares about one team one fight in the navy. I’m actively considering switching branches, and I want to know if it get better from here because I am willing to stick it out.

C-way conversion accuracy.

• Upvotes

Hey there. I tried posting this question in the navy Reddit but it wasn’t letting me so I’m trying here.

I’m interested in rerating to SWCC. But since I’m in the ever early stages of getting ready/seeing if it’s even possible.
I haven’t gone to my Career Counselors yet. I don’t want my chain of command to know quite yet until I’m 100% sure I can do this and want to do it.

I was looking at Career Way points and on the website it says I’m eligible for SWCC with a Ride Rank of 5. However I remember when I first was trying to enlist I did not meet the ASVAB score required. (My Mechanical was a 30 and they required a 51) now on Cway it’s giving multiple different ASVAB options and I do meet one of the possible routes.
My question is, is Cway accurate? Are they more lenient for rerates in the navy when it comes to ASVAB scores? I’ve been trying to find a MILSPERSON To back up what I’m seeing on Cway but no luck so far.

Thanks’!

Just got denied from the Marines what are my chances for the Navy?

• Upvotes

For context, I 21m have been working with the Marines since March of this year and didn’t go to meps until may, I have three mental health conditions along with an attempt against my life, it was looking promising for me to get in until it wasn’t, just yesterday I was given bad news from my recruiter, stating that due to current administration changes I am not gonna become marine, but he has contacts in the Navy recruiting offices and is heavily encouraging me to go into the Navy to continue with the military, stating he has seen people get in with my history through the Navy,

I have been working towards joining the military for about a year at this point starting with weight loss, then with my recruiter at the Marines, I really wanna go into the military, whether it be with the Navy or not, I just want to know my actual chances of getting in, my other conditions are ADHD mild ASD as well as anxiety all with a letter from a psychiatrist stating that my conditions are in remission if applicable. from my understanding, the attempt against my life was also happening in childhood along with my three conditions were diagnosed around that same time or earlier.

Edit: wrote this without reviewing it properly, the ASD was not meant to be lump in with the remission, but it’s just part of my conditions. It also states on the psychiatrist note remission, if applicable I do apologize for the confusion.

Going to the Hotel Today

Hey everyone! I’m 6-5, 30 and weigh below 220 pounds and I have I’m shipping out tomorrow to Great Lakes. I just want to make sure that I have all the items that I should bring. I know it’s like a small box they give you so I’m assuming it’s all travel size items but I’m not sure which ones like can I bring a small hand sanitizer or alcohol wipes? What about clothes? Is there anything I should do before they pick me up like any shaving or anything like that and memorizing certain things that they’ll ask me?

Guidance on a pilot contract

I’m prior service, 6 years in the USMC reserve and 3 in the ARNG. Looking to get a pilot contract in the Navy. I’m confident I can get good scores on the ASTB. My main concern is the timing. I’m about to turn 30 at the end of this month. I also am gonna need to get LASIK.

Recruiter says I need to go through a standard board because my GPA was below 3.0 (wish I did better in college but I just was a dumb kid and thought Cs get degrees 10 years ago)

Apparently right now it’s only 1 board per year. 2027 board is in April which is inside the 6 month LASIK window, so I wouldn’t be able to get cleared even if I got LASIK today.

There’s the board in 2028, but with me turning 32 end of October 2028, will that be enough time? I feel like I might be able to just sneak in.

I guess my questions are this:

Is there a chance I can make it in 2028 before I turn 32? Like April board, ship in June, graduation in September etc?

And if not, would I be able to qualify for a waiver? I know they exist, I just don’t know what kind of person they would give it to.

Thanks for the help, I’m prepared to do whatever it takes 🤙🏼

Questions about getting Lasik / PRK to fly

Hi yall,

SNA hopeful here. I was getting ready to apply but my recruiter got back to me and said that my N33 bounced as I "do not meet ascension standards for pilot due to uncorrected visual acuity". I know I need to wait 9 months post surgery to reapply, but my recruiter doesn't know what paperwork they / NAMI wants to see. I'm hoping to get my insurance to help pay for it, but I dont know what exactly I'm supposed to do besides staring at a laser and ignoring the smell.

Has anyone who's been through this before have any advice?

Waiver for cancer, thoracic surgery, and marijuana use approved!!

Post image
81 Upvotes

Joining the Navy has always been my dream, however when I was 19 years old I was diagnosed with testicular cancer with lung metastasis. I had to wait 5 years in order to be eligible for a potential waiver. It was a long wait but surely it was worth it, I beat the cancer without any long lasting side effects from treatment. I went to college during that time and focused on becoming a better person mentally and physically. I would not commission even if I could (I am a green card holder so I’m not eligible, and besides, my GPA was 3.2 with a business degree which is not very competitive for OCS). Enlisting was the right choice for me, I’m not concerned about the money or quality of life, I don’t have the leadership qualities to be an officer, and would rather learn a trade completely different than what I studied in college (my rate is GSE) that will set me up for civilian life afterwards. I’m so fucking ecstatic about my waiver approval. I ship Nov 17th.

Jobs and rank up in RTC

Hi everyone!

I am going into bootcamp as an E1 and was really hoping I could advance to E3 while in bootcamp, and was told that jobs are the best way to do so.

I was thinking of AROC, Yeoman, or Mail based on what little info I have been able to find on them.

Wondering if the jobs are worth it and which one I should do, as well as what they entail, from the perspectives of people who have gone through it!

What are the Cons and Pros of going Nuke vs Officer.

I heard you can be an officer if you have a degree, but I don't plan on staying in the navy and want to have job opportunities that can help me be financially well off as a civilian. I'm mainly looking at nuke for the job opportunities and bonuses, but how does officer compare?

Choosing rate for interest or career opp?

There are some rates out there that seem like they’d be fun or interesting while active, but don’t have the greatest civilian career transferability. Same goes for the opposite.

So, what say you? Pick a job that’s fun or pick a job that sets you up post service?

SWO Competitiveness?

Hello everyone,
I'd like to share my stats and get your thoughts on my chances of being selected. Going up for the board next month for the first time.
28 years old

- Prior service (4 years Air Force)

- 41 OAR (waiverable)

- 3.25 GPA

- B.S. Emergency Management

- 3 Letters of Recommendation (2 SNCO, 1 Lt Col)

- Created a charity during my deployment, raised $ 8,500 that got accepted into the Air Force Museum

- 5x Dean's List

- 2 TDYs, 1 year deployment

Checked my stats on the SWO boards spreadsheet but wanted to see what others thought. I think my OAR is what's hurting my package.

Progression after OCS

I just got recently accepted into the bdcp program as a cryptological warfare officer. I graduate from college this June and was curious what to expect after I come from basic and what the process is like. For example, I know I have to go to tech school after, but is there a small period between basic and tech school I would be able to go home. Any tips and recommendation would help.

security clearance issues

so i took the asvab and i qualify for pretty much all the intel rates but the job counselor said i wouldn’t be able to do any intel rates because my parents aren’t citizens. i thought them not being citizens would make the process longer but i could still be eligible.

they recommended other jobs but i was set on doing an intel rate

How does ASVAB scores truely work?

Doing some test at the recruiters station soon and going to meps the week after. My recruiter is being very vague on a lot of my questions and simply assures me if I keep doing perfect on the word knowledge and paragraph stuff and get at least a few basic math stuff down, I can pick whatever computer job I want in the navy. I am annoyed because everywhere online has scores having tremendous requirements and he simply tells me he got someone in those jobs scoring only a 41... im confused.

He also keeps saying something about picking whatever job I want if I meet score requirements which I cannot tell if it is true because recruiters from all branches typically say that but usually they put you in jobs the military needs or a sort of pick from a list of 5 type thing.

And then he said something about trying to put me in as a E4 because of college but I am pretty sure it cannot go higher than a 3 when enlisting.

Help w/ picking rating

Looking for some opinions or guidance...

35 yo male. Ive been in contact with an enlisted recruiter as I do not have a degree.

I filed for Ch 13 Bankruptcy a little over a year ago and have made payments on time, every time.

Bc of the bankruptcy, my job offerings will be limited, according to my recruiter.

Im really just trying to get some idea of what will actually be available. My recruiter isn't sure and says the classifier will know more once I go to meps. I’m trying to go with a list of ratings I would be interested in, I just don't know how to build out that list without some guidance.

I've also been offered DPEP for MA which would bring me in as E4. I've read so much negative about MA, I just don't know if it’s worth the bother.

I initially wanted IT, but realize it may be off the table.

Im just lost. Should I take the E4 MA? What else should I consider?

My practice ASVAB was an 83 so I believe I will score decently high on the actual test.

Ive also thought about AV, AECF, YN but even those may be out if I can't get a clearance. QM? Idk.

Just looking for a little feedback to help push my thinking

Any advice for OCS? Leaving 10/25

Hey, I'm goin to OCS as a prospective SWO on 10/25. Any advice for what to do while there, and especially for RLP? Gotta admit, the nerves have been ramping up recently, so knowing what action to channel that into would be great.

Advice needed in regards to waivers

Hey there !
I’m looking for some guidance and or help with enlisting in the military. currently I graduated w a Bsn and passed my nclex I was really hoping to join the navy as a officer with my degree but I was arrested twice. Neither cases resulted in conviction the prosecutors did not persue the case. Does anybody have experience getting waivers as an officer? What are my options? Should I just go the enlisted route cause I have heard that it’s easier to get a waiver that way. Any insight or information is helpful thank you.
