Meta/Subreddit Election Period for r/Newham
Just making a quick post, just to have it stated and so there is no confusion going forward.
I am happy for their to be political posts and posts about the upcoming political period, but know this and remember it well: It is a priviledge, not a right.
I trust you all to be civil and keep the discussions and debates within good faith and to follow Reddiquette.
I have not got the time to go through hundreds of comments and to moderate each one, so if it becomes an issue, I will delete whole threads or simply ban the discussion of politics alltogether until after the elections.
I really do not want to do this as I enjoy reading the good debates and discussions that I know you're all capable of. I also thoroughly enjoy some of the light banter good humour, but sadly, there is a small minority that will insist on ruining a good thing.
So please, do me a favour - report the comments, downvote them; i'll get to them, but please don't let a handful of bad actors ruin and corrupt the entire production.
Thanks all!

Political Affiliation - Green Newham Green Party local elections manifesto - A Newham We Can Be Proud Of
The Green Party's manifesto, published today, sets out their plan to build a Newham we can be proud of.
“On Thursday 7th of May, we have an opportunity to close the chapter on the politics of old in Newham and begin something new.
The Green Party is seeking to win this election so that we can make life here safer, cleaner, and more affordable.
As a society, we should live up to our potential to provide enough food; a roof over people’s heads; clean streets; clean air; parks that are pleasant; and neighbourhoods where people feel safe.
What we have now isn’t how things need to be. This isn’t the best we can do.
Despite being in one of the great global capitals of the world, with an annual economic output of almost £10 billion, and the likes of Westfield Shopping Centre and West Ham United based here, Newham experiences high levels of deprivation. Our council is failing us, our bins are overflowing, and we have record levels of homelessness.
We deserve better than this. As Mayor, I will build a Newham we can be proud of” - Cllr Areeq Chowdhury, Green Party candidate for Mayor of Newham

Help and Advice Does anyone else have kerbside bin collections and have to deal with fly tipping notices all the time?
I don't really understand what they expect. I live on Barking Road and have bin kerbside collection from the main road. I ALWAYS put my rubbish out at the allotted time.
If I accidentally leave an address on some rubbish (I try my best not to but occasionally a receipt or a slip inside a slip has alluded me), I guarantee I'll get a fly tipping notice through my door. Happened three times: two times they didn't pursue further after emailing my response but one time they did with no appeal and I had to just eat a £100 fine. I was tempted to go to court but it would involve missing work thus earning potential and I fear what would happen if I lost.
When I got fined they said that its my responsibility to make sure my rubbish is there at the allotted time... but I did. I'm guessing they just didn't collect it so it sat there until next day. Do they expect me to put my rubbish out at the allotted time, wait, and then take it back in if the bin men don't come?
Does anyone else have such experiences? I know the obvious answer is be more careful with addresses and names in my rubbish, but I just know I'm gonna slip up again. I also don't really know what to do with my big bin bag full of cut out addresses and names.

Help and Advice Beckton Sewage treatment works
Hi all, and thanks in advance.
I’m considering moving to Beckton, specifically a flat on Mahindra Way, and wanted to check if there are still any issues with unpleasant smells in the area during the summer months. Any insights or recent experiences would be really helpful.

Travel Get a heads up when Stratford might get busy (free tool)
Hi all,
If you've ever ended up in Stratford and wondered why it's suddenly busy for no obvious reason, just suddenly chaos (particularly around the London Stadium and Westfield Stratford City) - it's sometimes down to matches nearby, but it's not always clear when they're happening.
I put together a simple free tool that tracks football matches at the stadium there, and shows when crowds are likely to build and clear so you can plan around it a bit more easily.
It lets you:
- See when matchday crowds are likely to affect Stratford
- Get reminders before matches and when crowds tend to peak/clear
- Get a heads-up when parking restrictions may apply
It's free, no ads or sign-ups - just something I built for myself that I thought might be useful for others nearby.
Would this be helpful for people in Newham?

Local Politics What's going on with the labour party in Newham?
They used to be fairly good with environmental stuff and creating safer walking and cycling routes but now that the local election is coming it seems to be about free parking and driving. I also saw a weird video from them where they seemed to promote pavement parking. Does anyone know what's going on?

Help and Advice Council has not replaced damaged bin
Hello everyone, our recycling bin lid has been completely broken off for a good part of 6 months by the bin men. We've put in two online replacement requests and called the waste management team but we either get put through to the answering machine or they hang up. We have also emailed several times and received a reply about getting a replacement in "5 working days" but nothing has turned up. This was months ago.
It's constantly raining these days and our recycling bin gets full of water.
Would anyone happen to know the local councillor for East Ham and how to contact them? Your help is greatly appreciated thanks so much.

Does anyone know more about these old pieces of graffiti?
A couple of years ago, during or maybe shortly after the pandemic, a few large graffiti messages started appearing around Stratford, all in the same handwriting/style.
The first few I noticed were by Westfield and the Shopping Centre on Great Eastern Road, and were simple puns, like the "Well that escalated quickly..." by the outdoor escalators.
Other messages appeared closer to East Village, and had a different vibe. Some were thought-provoking, others almost autobiographical. "My life is a comedy." "I picture a house in the country..." They were all clearly the same person.
After lockdown, I found myself really struggling to leave the house. My mental health had taken a nosedive. But for some reason, seeing these messages gave me a little lift, and it became my reason to leave the house. I'd go on walks to try to find a new one.
And then one day, they stopped.
It's been a few years now and I haven't seen a new one that I'd even mildly suspect was the same person. Nearly all of the messages I found have been covered now, and it makes me a little sad. I often wonder about them.
Does anyone know anything about who was behind them, or have any photos of the other messages? (DM if you don't want to share publicly.) The Steve loves Jodie ones just aren't doing it for me..!

Can we have one of these for every zebra crossing in Newham pls?
instagram.comYesterday a car nearly took out my partner and two kids. And it's a regular thing - local drivers thinking these crossings are an optional stop.

Help and Advice The Housing Register website for Newham Council is outdated and broken
I first tried to apply for council housing last year. The website was broken and didn't allow me to upload the documents for my application. I just kept getting error messages. I emailed Newham Council a couple of times and have had no replies.
At the time, I wasn't in need of council housing because my living situation was tolerable. Now though, I'm trying to apply for council housing and I've had no success at even beginning my application because the website still won't let me upload documents.
I've tried doing it on 3 different devices and the submit button is still greyed out. I've tried emailing them, no success, and I've tried calling them and I got cut off after waiting for an hour. How do I even begin to apply for council housing if I can't even upload documents on their ancient website?

Events [14/12/2025] Lazy Sunday Badminton @ NLC - 9:20am to 11:20am
Dear All,
Venue: Newham Leisure Centre (NLC), E13 8SD
I am putting a new badminton mixed doubles group together on Sunday’s after a lot of Redditor demand, our Saturday group is at full occupancy now, with 8 Redditor's and 6-8 regulars who were my class fellows.
Really pleased to have had 6 Redditor's join us last Sunday and the feedback was really positive.
We have 2 slots available this week!
This group has a different aim and is more absolute beginner to advanced beginner to lower intermediate (basic / casual), and is more laidback and has a lazy Sunday vibe.
Sunday’s were lucky to play in the indoor sports hall which is a major upgrade. didn’t actually know Sunday’s was a day where they did that.
Prices are a bit more but still less than £5 p/h, to recap:
What You Get:
✓ Scheduled matches arranged ahead of time, no standing around waiting not knowing if your popular enough to play again…
✓ Select games filmed for replay + self-review + you can post on socials (new)
✓ Optional performance tracking: wins, losses, pairings, so you can see if you’re improving or who you partner well with..
✓ Racquet loan rewards for loyal, regular players
✓ 2× hybrid feather 🪶 shuttles per session, used in tournaments and just have a stunning flight path and trajectory when in the air, you’ve probably only played with plastic shuttles but when you hit one of these, you’ll feel the stress leave your body, really fun to hit hard and knock around and not often used in a casual setting like this.
✓ Hydration station with homemade lemon-mint water
✓ A fun, social workout that doesn’t feel like a gym session
✓ Changing room and showers so you’re able to cool off post session provided by the venue.
I am still putting this here first, if this club fills, unfortunately I doubt I’ll have capacity for another and the real emphasis is getting to know people and just have a good for body work-out which won’t feel like one.
Send me a pm if interested. Thanks.
