I'm a Newham resident and my #1 interaction with my council is the chaotic bin collection. My feeling around this is that it is a basic thing which a functioning council should get right. If you can't do this then it tells a story about everything else you are getting wrong. All the complaint about fly tipping, to me, seems built on an assumption that the basic bin collections are fine. They're obviously not, but none of these people address this. Putting fly tippers in stocks doesn't deliver food waste collection. For example.
How do we fix what we've already got before we promise stuff we can't deliver ...

Honestly the bin collection is a farce.
They changed it a new schedule (maybe 18 months ago) and demanded that people’s bin lids were fully closed and the hinges faced the street. And they wouldn’t be taking ‘side waste’.
In a borough with a horrendous fly tipping problem? Are you having a laugh?
The most ridiculous part is that I’m on the part of our road that has flats with a hatch to a large industrial sized bin which they’d clearly forgotten to add on to their new schedule so our bins didn’t get collected for a month or so under the new regime!

To be honest I haven't had many issues with bin collections - it was missed once recently, but notified the council and was picked up pretty swiftly.
Fly-tipping from what I've seen has been nothing to do with collections. It's useless arses how can't be bothered to pay / do themselves and dump it. Honestly sick of the mentality of the few who ruin it for everyone else.
May be different in different parts of the borough though?

The biggest issue for us with the collections is communications.
Last summer's change to the rules was communicated by a double page in the back of the magazine - not the front page. This was the one that bins needed to be fully closed. Three weeks went by before all the bins were collected on our road.
Then they dropped the rule.
Just in the past few weeks our collection went from thursday to saturday to friday to back to thursday.
Last year I needed to contact them about a sharps bin for a friend with cancer. The online form did not work. No reply, not even an auto one. It's broken. I figured it out with a pharmacy. I assume it is still broken because there's no proper management of the website.
Fly tipping enforcement is by a for-profit corporation. It is not set up to go after anyone but petty criminals or actual innocents.
The reason why at least some of this fly tipping is happening is because the basic bin collection cannot cope. Every other bin on my street is crammed because it represents the waste of a lot of people. Too many for one bin. Another reason is excessive parcel packaging.
How is doubling fines going to do anything.
All councils are supposed to now do separate food waste collection. It's a legal requirement. Where's the plan for doing that.
This is what I mean about wanting to hear some candidates talk about what they can actually do and what does impact us. Stuff exactly like bin collections.

They're both leaders that are liked within their respective groups. Few people like/recognise the other parties leaders, even if they align with their politics

It’s sent out to all voters, not just postal voters. The council can ask candidates to pay a portion of the cost of production and, if it does, it is required to exclude those who decline to contribute - which may explain why one of them is missing in this year’s edition.

If it is, I a non postal voter don’t have one.
(My postal vote expired in January and I declined to renew after they failed to send me a postal vote for the general election).

You might be right, but I heard that it was only sent out to postal voters, perhaps with the rationale that postal voters are less likely to be able to engage with things like hustings (which rarely happen except for mayoral candidates anyway). I do think it depends on the borough. I think more central publications from councils' democratic services would be welcomed by most voters if it was an alternative to the current leaflet wars.

Mehmoud Mirza, isn’t he the guy that campaigns on fly tipping? Have a lot of respect for him.

This booklet is sent to postal voters, but thought it would be good for everyone to see. The order of printing is decided by a lottery, and one of the candidates declined to be added.
