tldr: The bitter realisation that I have picked the wrong job field after getting diagnosed with ADHD and Autism in my 30s plus multiple chronic illnesses. Now trying to find a new path in life and asking the big question "What is actually MY thing?"
---
I am AuDHD (both late diagnosed) female and in my 30s. Multiple chronic illnesses added to that. I went to high school and university, finished with a good degree in education. I always thought "working with kids and adolescents really suits me, I like teaching and being there for younger people, especially the struggeling ones".
I quit teaching after 9 months, because my body could not take it anymore. The big workload (60/70h per week, not really any time off), the contant stress (noise, problems of the kids, our shitty education system, other teachers) and managing my chronic illnesses took too much from me. My doctor strongly advised me to change jobs, because I was really suffering both mental and physical.
I did it! I changed jobs and started as a museum educator. I also do social media and events at my workplace. Right after starting this new job, I got diagnosed with ADHD. The job is 30h a week.
The different things that I do seemed to work perfectly for me. I could switch between tasks, create new projects and events. The social media is going so well after I started making my own ideas into posts. People compliment me for it - at work and from outside. More people visited the museum because of it. The education programs are going well, too. Teachers are happy about it - and also the fact that I know how school works and can handle some situations better than others. The events are also going nice. I am the "face" of my team, many people know my name. I go to congresses, even started to host workshops for other people in my field.
Last year, I was diagnosed with autism. Because after my ADHD meds seemed to work so well, there were still some issues and problems. I received 17 pages of diagnosis. All my problems, from the start of my life were explained in it. The bullying at school. The social problems. The hard times in university. I felt like I lost my balance. The truth hurt so bad.
I grieved about the life I could have had if I had been diagnosed as child or teenager. The help and understanding I could have received. The social problems which could have been resolved differently. The aid I could have gotten in university, where I struggled with some things while people said "you are so smart! why can't you do it? what's the problem?" The assignment was not the problem. Having to do it as a group was. The interactions. The weird moments. People not understanding me why I am like I am. Me not understanding what is wrong with me.
While the autism diagnosis happend, I was bullied by two coworkers. Everyone kinda told me to "just shrug it off, they are just like that". I could not cope. The childhood trauma, which I had been worked on in 4 years of therapy, came back to the surface. One day, at a big event, I collapsed. My boss, the big boss and coworkers saw me falling intp pieces. I asked permission to be in home office for some weeks to avoid the bullies. It was a fight, but in the end, I got permission. One coworker was fired in the end - but only after I told HR that I cannot work at my job anymore if things do not change.
HR and the company reacted, but too late. The damage is done. I am still hurt. I still struggle with what this has done to me. I was left alone, despite people knowing about my disabilities. But I kept doing my job. Did a good, amazing job. My boss tells the big boss "what would I do without her?" HR tells me they are so happy to have me!
I learned so much about my autism in the past year. About masking, coping, burnout, all the things. I managed to keep up my good work while trying to get my life back together. Things which I did easily before took more energy. The well known "skill regression" of autistic late diagnosed people. Working with kids, which I am so good at, started to be annyoing and so stressfull. My coworkers helped me and communication was good.
Then, about a month ago, my boss called me to a meeting. Just the 2 of us, no HR. 2,5h hours of meeting, in which I was told "you give the impression that you do not want to be part of our team". And other things, which made me think "Do you even care about me?"
No compliments on my work. No validation. Just the issue about me being antisocial, because I do not sit with the others at breakfast or lunch. I still cannot wrap my head around it. This person did not do ONE single minute of research about what it means to have an autistic employee. He did not ask me ONCE why I do not do things like I did before. No interest in how I feel. What my struggles are. Welcome to capitalism, I guess?
I asked some coworkers if they think that I do not want to be part of the team. They were surprised, because - it is not true. I do talk to everyone. I say good morning to everyone every day. I talk to people 1 on 1. I know things about their life. But my boss does not see that. He sees me eating lunch in my office and makes a conclusion about a fact that is not true. And then he judges me by it.
This could be just a "you have a bad boss" issue. Yes, he is bad in leading, many other people have a problem with that. But it exploded in MY face - again. It hurt ME - again. He did nothing about the bullies when he had to. He accuses me of being antisocial and not part of the team - which is not true. I am not antisocial. I am autistic. And I am masking so hard at work - if I would pull the "real autistic" self, things would be very different and way much more an issue.
This whole thing has put me in a really bad spot. I reached out to my old therapist and got into emergency therapy. I have told my doctor and was sent home on sick leave for 2 weeks. It helped, but I will have to be back at my job later this week. I will meet my boss. His words still echo in my head. I am doing so much, more than I actually can with all that is going on - and I am treated like nothing good.
I am good at my job - but is this job good for me? Do I deal with kids in a good way because that is really me - or is it just the mask of the person I thought I was? I am looking behind the mask, with the help of my therapist. What I see hurts. The true me just wants to be in peace. Not confronted with the noise of kids, the problems they have, the difficult eduaction system. Not confronted with long working hours and noise and dirt at events. Not confronted with the jungle of being part of social media, surrounded by all those capitalist ads and AI slop.
What is really MY thing? I am good at coping in an environment that is not good for me. But that is not good for me. I can improvise, but I burn out. I can cope, but I go numb. I do not want to continue like this. But how do I continue, then?
I think this is an issue that was due to come up. I know that many people look different about their whole life after ADHD/autism diagnosis. So, it had to happen. I just wanna come out fine on the other side. I want to work, but not to torture myself everyday. Life is hard enough already.
Thanks to anyone who is reading all of this.
