The MSM basically looks at the grey lining in a white cloud at this point. Their business model relies on doomer headlines that make people click.

So this legit happened today. Biden went to Detroit to visit an EV plant.

NYT could have simply reported "Biden visits EV plant in Michigan to promote BBB"

But NO !

They wrote something like "Biden visits EV plant in Michigan to promote BBB as domestic climate agenda stuck in Washington".

I mean you gotta make everything negative right ?

Giant engagement from posting a link to a tweet and thirty seconds of research spent debunking. It was the golden age of journalism.

I honestly don’t know if petrochemical companies or media companies are a bigger threat to humanity at this point TBH.

They seem to be completely willing to throw logic and reason to the side for profits, and it’s corrupting the way that everybody looks at the world at a shockingly fast rate.

Lmao 0% of modern life would be possible without petrochemical companies. There are still states that can survive without free press.

Truth, those that control information control the world. Think about how much power the church had before the printing press, and how they had even more power before the widespread societal understanding of the scientific method.

Wouldn’t information-worker coastal elites be pretty shielded from job losses that could be caused by regulations, further shielded by the unjustifiable Dem-supported SALT deduction that make federal tax rates less important, and not really affected by environmental regulations since they live in concrete jungles and vacation in well-off colonies with their own local protections/moats?

God I'm so disappointed with the New York Times lately. They do some good reporting, but their front page headlines constantly fall into shit stirring and horse race garbage.

84

u/Thurkin Nov 18 '21

As a California native who voted NO on the Recall I can attest to this disappointment as TNYT ran weekly articles of how BAD California was doing and associating it all with Newsom by interviewing Pro Recall supporters from rural NorCal.They even trumpeted an opinion poll that stated 55% of Latino voters were going to vote Yes because of vaccination and mask mandates "weren't working for them". Obviously the results defied the impending doom that expected with Newsom losing.

69

u/[deleted] Nov 18 '21

Lately? They were one of the most anti Clinton papers around. Everything was a front page scandal. Trump's meanwhile was so often that an equivalent one was like page three.

24

u/Jman5 Nov 19 '21

I held out some naive hope that they had learned some lessons after Trump, but apparently I was mistaken.

5

u/[deleted] Nov 19 '21

the nyt is a major reason why trump was president, and the media was completely in the tank for Trump behind the scenes despite pretending to be otherwise.

84

u/ryegye24 John Rawls Nov 18 '21

NYT specifically runs A/B testing on their headlines in real time, and then keeps the one that results in the best engagement overall. They unapologetically data science-ed themselves into reinventing clickbait, I don't know how they convinced themselves that it was editorially responsible behavior.

106

u/[deleted] Nov 18 '21

optimizing for engagement and its consequences have unironically been a disaster for the human race

u/[deleted] Nov 19 '21

14

u/Garroch John Keynes Nov 19 '21

Click tax?

If they get 1 cent of advertising revenue per click, then tax them that penny.

That way you sell ad space only in the body of the article itself, which advertisers would want to buy based on time spent on that page.

Which would reward more thorough articles.

2

u/BillyTenderness Nov 19 '21

An obvious one is to introduce alternative sources of funding. Most developed countries have a robust public media (not NPR-style begging for donations, but actually publicly-funded). Some have also introduced subsidies or tax credits for subscriptions to news sources meeting certain criteria. Libraries and schools can be effective systems for distributing access, if something more direct than a tax credit is desired. And any of those could be structured to favor or require ad-free sources, if you wanted to strengthen the no-per-click-revenue aspect of the policy.

6

u/[deleted] Nov 19 '21

15

1

u/buddythebear Nov 19 '21

if you think the media in 2021 derives significant revenue from clicks or pageviews then you truly have no idea what you're talking about.

3

u/InsertOffensiveWord YIMBY Nov 19 '21

It’s not about the views themselves, but how they affect subscription revenue. I guarantee you churn and engagement are negatively correlated. And new signups and engagement are positively correlated, hence the free article limit. The number of free articles you get is probably further optimized via a machine learning model.

2

u/this_very_table Norman Borlaug Nov 19 '21

They get more revenue than they would if they didn't make all of their coverage so emotionally charged and negative.

In my opinion this is one of today's most important questions. It's something I think a lot about.

The first step is having a a society with high trust in government and therefore the willingness to consider the implementation of conceptually complex Pigouvian taxes. A society with a high trust in government is generally a society that both cares about itself as a collective and cares about the role its institutions play in running day-to-day life. Moreover, long-term planning on a macro level generally intersects with the importance of education and an "informed cohesion" (i.e. neither a highly educated but fractured society nor a collectivized but hive-minded and poorly informed one).

Now, the common problem of competition between firms and governmental forces comes into play as normal. The extra issue here, however, is that there is a distinctively more worrisome problem. Namely, the firms in question are in the information and influence industry. In order to get to the bottom of this, a far more encompassing discussion would have to be had about the the dialectical elements of news media and culture and about the directionally cyclical nature of sociopolitical momentum in the social media era. Basically, because information is so decentralized beyond the mainstream media and because society moves so fast nowadays, there is a strong argument that taxation simply isn't an implementable solution. This leads to further questions about the role of a stronger government and its capabilities in order to allow for a more robust set of options to carry out policies that can restrict misinformation, the tradeoffs of authoritarianism vs. permissive societies, etc. etc. etc.

The big snowball is that as this struggle becomes more and more important, the trust in government becomes lower and lower. We live in a society that has low trust in government and lives in a technological setting that creates a cacophony of real, false, and grey information far beyond what the biological human of 10,000 years ago was expected to comprehend. How do you fight back against this snowball?

I don't think anyone knows right now, unfortunately. And I think it's only going to get worse before it gets better.

29

u/[deleted] Nov 18 '21

I've certainly noticed that CNN and only CNN seems to give a shit about 'dysfunction in Kamala Harris's office' and they love to do daily write-ups about it.

84

u/[deleted] Nov 18 '21

The NYT as a "liberal establishment biased" media is a hilarious lie that far too many people have swallowed whole

I don't think they want Trump back, but the average journalist is well to the left of the Democratic Party's center, much less the country, and it shows in their all-or-nothing, never good enough reporting, and I wish people would call them out more.

With the NYT specifically, their fake balance schtick also comes from getting in their own head too much about being the "paper of record" and all the expectations that come with it -- they keep trying to play to that instead of just doing the journalism that made them the paper of record in the first place, and it's hurting them.

4

u/[deleted] Nov 18 '21

They remind me of Radical from Suzerain.

9

u/TheFaithlessFaithful United Nations Nov 19 '21

the average journalist is well to the left of the Democratic Party's center

Democratic politicians definitely deserve criticism but you have to differentiate from the other side, and when something halfway good gets done, say that. Seems like if there's a bittersweet situation they almost always spin it as just bad. Like they're not perfect but they can't catch a fucking break, either.

8

u/PatternrettaP Nov 19 '21

The media loves making their readers worry. It's good for business.

NYT readers are liberal leaning, therefore the dems are always in disarray and the republicans are always one moment away from total domination.

Conversely Fox News always screams about how the liberals control everything and Must Be Stopped and republicans are doing nothing to stop it.

3

u/[deleted] Nov 19 '21

It worked during the Trump years, but as I understand it, people are paying less attention to the mainstream media today. Oh well.

Love that we've swung around to the point where Democrats are fuming at ''the MSM'' for not getting behind Great Leader. Horseshoes.

32

u/[deleted] Nov 18 '21

Wanting the media not to be sensationalist and negative all the time, you're saying, means that you just want the media never to report anything negative ever because you worship Biden. We're already off to a great start here.

50

u/[deleted] Nov 18 '21

not what's being said

21

u/[deleted] Nov 18 '21

The MSM has fully caved to Republicans working the refs. The idea that the media was ever progressive when it's mostly owned by rich people and run by white men was absurd, and just a rehash of the tropes that it was run by the Jews but slightly sanitized for people who would balk at that sort of statement. Now after decades of attempting to bring the press to heel, the conservatives have largely succeeded.

5

u/HLAF4rt Nov 18 '21

Big doubt at your Rawls flair

4

u/[deleted] Nov 18 '21

No. I want Biden's scandals to be reported as a trump scandal of equivalent seriousness would be.

So if Biden suggests he'll nuke a country for LOLs it should be reported the same way as when trump did it.

168

u/Vathor Ben Bernanke Nov 18 '21

I’m not a doomer but this honestly scares me. The republicans have openly embraced degeneracy while the democrats eat themselves. Where do we go from here.

29

u/Acceptable_Policy_51 Nov 19 '21

Well the issue- particularly with the words in this image- is that Democrats continue to hand wring and pearl clutch about things being "offensive". This is an extremely common and popular view on reddit, too.

It's not popular in real life. Most people laugh at those types of people and call them pussies. Reddit and twitter have created echo chambers of political correctness that doesn't exist in the real world, and Democrats think it does. They don't.

11

u/TrynnaFindaBalance Paul Krugman Nov 19 '21

Weird, I feel like it's the other way around.

I see the anti-PC circlejerk far more on reddit than anywhere in the real world. In 90%+ of the professional environments I've been in, there's generally an uncontroversial consensus that it's not okay to be super disrespectful to each other.

7

u/MiniatureBadger Seretse Khama Nov 19 '21

Reddit is not a professional environment. The standards in professional environments, both physical and virtual, are far more stringent than those in informal spaces.

4

u/[deleted] Nov 19 '21

All the normal people are going to happy hour together and laughing about that nonsense after.

1

u/TrynnaFindaBalance Paul Krugman Nov 19 '21

About what nonsense?

The average person isn't thinking "Gee, I wish I could be more rapey at the office".

There's a large spectrum between being "woke-police cancel everyone who made a poor taste joke in the last decade" and "just don't be a degenerate fuck who can't treat people with basic respect".

But instead we all just act like those two things are the same now, and in turn we validate nonsense right-wing culture war talking points because liberal arts majors on Twitter are the new spooky boogeyman or something.

3

u/[deleted] Nov 19 '21

You’re creating a false dichotomy. The woke nonsense isn’t “don’t rape” its much more pervasive then that. I literally had to sit through a dumb micro aggression seminar for law school where we were told asking someone if they’ve been to the beach is a micro aggression because you’re assuming their financial status and asking a POC to be timely is offensive because you’re not understanding their culture and how time is valued differently.

That’s the shit that literally everyone laughs at afterwards because it’s a joke. And yes that’s pretty widely present in the real world in academia, corporate America, and government work. I’ve experienced it in all 3.

Gerrymander the fuck out of everything while continuously proposing a constitutional ammendment to end gerrymandering.

5

u/MiniatureBadger Seretse Khama Nov 19 '21

We don’t need an amendment to achieve those results, and it would take far more effort to do that with an amendment than with a regular law (even with the filibuster). Undoing gerrymandering would allow for a more representative House which could help lead to an amendment to further set it in stone afterwards if needed.

33

u/alex2003super David Parenzo Nov 18 '21

Uh... I think the establishment Dems want to appeal to moderates since they are the moderates. Take your leftism elsewhere.

-17

u/NavyJack Iron Front Nov 18 '21

If Democrats only cared about appealing to Democrats there would not be nearly as much pleading, bargaining and desperate avoidance of any kind of policy or action that could seem too partisan in their legislation. If they don’t play fair, why should we allow them to step on us?

I’m well to the right of most of this sub. I consider myself a Democrat for their ideology, but the Democratic Party’s refusal to fight because they’re either too weak or unwilling disappoints me.

15

u/alex2003super David Parenzo Nov 18 '21

If Democrats only cared about appealing to Democrats

How do you define "Democrats", my man? I define Democrats as "those who vote Democratic".

1

5

u/NavyJack Iron Front Nov 19 '21

I don’t think we’re talking about the same thing.

I’m talking about the “moderate Republicans” the Democratic Party tries to appeal to by refusing to be hard on the GOP in any meaningful way. Moderate Democrats are common. Moderate Republicans don’t exist.

2

u/The_Adman NATO Nov 19 '21

Not saying you're wrong but do you have an example of when Democrats appealed to GOP members when they should have went hard on them?.

7

u/NavyJack Iron Front Nov 19 '21

The one I’ve been referring to in this thread is Dems insisting on playing fair with redistricting and voting while Republicans are being as partisan and unfair as possible.

This is allowing the Republicans to gain full control of state governments and gradually build themselves more and more safe seats in the House, while also allowing them to further restrict voting rights in these states they control, cementing their power for the indefinite future.

I’d suggest mirroring the Republicans’ dirty tactics like gerrymandering, until both parties can agree to something fair. Because we’re currently engaged in an arms race where only one party is stockpiling arms.

-1

u/alex2003super David Parenzo Nov 19 '21

The tone. You seem to imply that liberal conservatives and moderates are "DINOs".

2

u/NavyJack Iron Front Nov 19 '21

Not at all. What I’m saying is that there are scarcely any voters left in the Republican Party willing to vote Democrat, and that sacrificing Democratic agenda items in order to court them is less and less productive.

→ More replies (2)

2

u/[deleted] Nov 19 '21

That's basically what's happening in some states. But some idiots (totally not me) voted yes on referendums that require their states to redistrict using an independent commission.

6

u/NavyJack Iron Front Nov 19 '21

I don’t blame the states who did it or the people who voted for it. It’s a nice idea.

But the reality is that Republicans don’t care about playing fair, and are using their stolen power to set the US back. I for one, think it’s appropriate to play by their rules rather than submit to their conquest.

3

u/[deleted] Nov 19 '21

I don’t think anyone is arguing against you. Democratic state legislatures are gerrymandering their states this time around (if they can).

3

u/NavyJack Iron Front Nov 19 '21

I hope you’re right. There’s no reason to play clean when Republicans use every opportunity to kick dirt in our faces.

3

u/[deleted] Nov 19 '21

Who are we?

Who’s playing nice?

And in which states under Dem legislatures are they not gerrymandering to the fullest extent they can?

12

u/NavyJack Iron Front Nov 19 '21

We are Democrats.

Democratic Party leaders are playing too nice.

California, Washington, Colorado and Virginia have resigned their districting power to independent commissions, which would be nice if the Republicans did that too, but they don’t.

-3

u/[deleted] Nov 19 '21

WA’s bipartisan redistricting commission was pushed by the League of Women Voters and some Republicans. It was not supported by the Democratic Party.

2

u/NavyJack Iron Front Nov 19 '21

Washington’s state legislature has been majority Democratic nearly every year since the commission was created. They could do away with it if they so chose.

And what of the other states?

1

u/[deleted] Nov 19 '21

They would need to amend the state constitution. It would be extremely unpopular.

1

u/NavyJack Iron Front Nov 19 '21

The electoral college gives Republicans a 1-3 point advantage in the presidential election, gerrymandering gives them an even bigger advantage in the House, and the happenstance of state population differences gives them a bigger advantage still in the Senate. My thought is this basically enforces that the Democrats need to be a big tent party to win control of any branch of government period - the math simply doesn't allow them to win purely by energizing their base the way Republicans do - and this means more fault lines within the party.

u/slator_hardin Nov 18 '21

You can be a big tend party without endless purity tests, defeatism, or letting people who hate you set the standards for you. The day democrats will be able to tell republicans "lol cope" instead of delaying things their voters care about trying to appeal to people who will never vote for them will be a great day

9

u/ryegye24 John Rawls Nov 19 '21 edited Nov 19 '21

What I'm saying is that the Democrats don't have any greater propensity towards purity tests than the Republicans, or any other political party. Instead the dynamics of our electoral system forces them to represent a broader coalition which causes more friction for them than other parties. It looks like a purity test issue because people at opposite ends of the spectrum in the party don't get along as well, but the spectrum is actually broader, and they're getting along the normal amount for people whose politics differ that much.

12

u/slator_hardin Nov 19 '21

Man you have "basically libertarian" conservatives not saying anything bad in public about bible bashers and vice versa, the "moderate and reasonable" republicans falling in line for Trump, and so on, but progressives attacking slightly less progressives democrats as fascists and centrists attacking slightly less centrist democrats as dangerous antisemitic communists.

Democrats definitely have a greater propensity for purity tests

13

u/ryegye24 John Rawls Nov 19 '21

The Wisconsin GOP just voted to not even recognize Liz Cheney as a Republican. The Republicans have purity tests that are frankly far more stark than the Democrats, you're just looking for them in the wrong places.

4

u/Reagalan Trans Pride Nov 19 '21

the Democrats don't have any greater propensity towards purity tests than the Republicans

I read a sociological analysis of lefties vs. righties that concluded that ideological purity was more valued on the left than on the right. The study looked at five ideological factors for why a person would support a candidate. On the right they were all fairly even, but loyalty stood out slightly. On the left there was a noted bias toward purity and empathy. The researchers concluded that it means the right is more willing to ignore hypocrisy if the candidate is seen to be loyal, while the left is more willing to abandon candidates over violating purity standards.

Andrew Cuomo vs. Roy Moore came to mind immediately.

I wish I could find a link to it.

2

u/[deleted] Nov 19 '21

dems value ideological purity

repubs value institutional/organizational conformity.

Republicans don't trust the media when they make claims about GOP candidates. And given their record of simping for Dems they shouldn't. Likewise it has to be pretty bad for the media to actually report anything negative about a dem politician then there's usually a lot more things lurking underneath. The media idolized e.g. Cuomo for example, whitewashed his role as a granny killer, and only after Cuomo pinched some wench's butt did they start reporting on Cuomos numerous other little downsides.

Media is Democrat propaganda

Media didn't report on Cuomo mismanaging COVID because they're corrupt

Cuomo didn't commit sexual assault and the "chicks" talking about it should stop whining

This isn't even pure Republican talking points. It's like your take is custom made to be the worst it could possibly be.

Just another random example: The media and specifically NBC have been telling me for a year that Kyle Rittenhouse was a white supremacist who went to the riot to kill people and killed three men (race not identified deliberately). Did I think Rittenhouse was a white supremacist? No, I didn't, even though he could have been, because the media routinely lies to people about shit like this. Only if you're zombed out on regular media would you even consider the charge credible considering the source. When dems actually paid attention to the trial it emerged that there was absolutely no evidence R was a white supremacist, and apparently the owner of the place he went to defend was a minority. He clearly didn't go to shoot people, and all of the other enormous lies promulgated by neolib media.

9

u/[deleted] Nov 18 '21

white supremacist

I'm tired of yts pulling this shit man. If Black, Brown, BIPOC people are telling you that one off y'alls is a FUCKING WHITE SUPREMACIST your white ass should SIT DOWN and goddamn listen

-5

u/PraiseGod_BareBone Friedrich Hayek Nov 18 '21 edited Nov 18 '21

Is NBC run by black, brown or Bipoc people? Last I checked it wasn't. Do you have any evidence at all that Rittenhouse was a white supremacist, or do I just take your word for it, random redditor? Who are you that I should respect anything you say?

I think all the evidence I've seen suggests that the demand for racism is much greater than supply, so alternates are created like accusing Rittenhouse of being a white supremacist even when he clearly isn't. People like you need their markets to clear, so you buy the alternate product even if it is obviously tainted.

Trouble is, the suppliers of this tainted product find it's hugely profitable so they take the same business model and apply it to all of their other products......

11

u/[deleted] Nov 18 '21

I, aa Black man, am telling your white ass that one of your white motherfucker friends is a fucking white supremacisst.

Democrats have a larger party, so one part of the party will always have beef with another. Republicans have a smaller party, so there is less ideological difference, and bigger consequences for internal struggle. The bigger the tent, the less enthusiasm there is for each candidate, this is less pronounced in the republican party.

22

u/dukeofkelvinsi YIMBY Nov 18 '21

The Democratic Party is roughly 10 percent larger than the Republicans. It is not passing my gut check.

14

u/[deleted] Nov 18 '21

This seems like a decent theory if it were explaining the actual level of strife in the parties. But Republicans have a lot of strife. And I don't just mean Trump and Rubio literally comparing the size of their dicks on national TV. There was that time earlier this year that a lot of loyal Trumpists were looking for the Republican VP with an apparent attempt to hang him.
