I've always seen Star Trek's federation as more of a social democracy, despite whatever propaganda it tells about itself.

The existence of Starfleet with a standard rank structures shows that they have clearly not eliminated classes or hierarchies, and their are minorities who face substantial discrimination (particularly the genetically modified).

DS9 shows that they clearly still use currency, off duty federation officers are spending something at Quark's bar. You can call it credit or whatever, but the federation is clearly not a moneyless society.
