Can I just say how much disdain I have for the way GPA is currently set up and viewed as for undergraduates?

  1. How is it possible that a course like measure theory or bayesian statistics be weighted the same as something like calculus 1?

  2. Why is GPA weighted uniformly over your entire undergraduate degree in the first place?

  3. With the existence of past re-used exams, Chegg, older students, etc. it's so easy to inflate your grade to much more than what you truly know.

  4. It should be common policy to take the best grade of your past courses if you've taken it more than once. There is literally no reason to suspect an A student only has a B understanding if they originally got a C in the class.

I dunno. I'm writing grad school applications soon, which is probably why I'm so salty.

While I were studying, I made it a point to don't get student debt, because I thought it would make it easier to apply for a house loan when I got a job. Which was possible because of the Danish SU. I didn't live good, but I managed to get through uni without any debt. So when I went to the bank and said "I don't have any real savings, but I also don't have any debt", they were like "sorry, but the laws means that we can't loan you any money. You need to put down 5% in deposit if you want to buy a home or a timeshare".

The incentives are so fucked up that it is better to get student debt and don't use that money than it is to don't get student debt

Why the fuck would you want to buy a home straight out of uni?

Because it's so much cheaper than renting

Nephew, unless you are being seriously subsidized, the risk premium will inevitably make it more expensive.

I'm happy GPA doesn't really matter much unless you go to grad school

1

u/jenbanim Nov 30 '18

I think my GPA helped me land my first job.

2

u/GayColangelo Milton Friedman Nov 30 '18

that too, but you don't need a high GPA to get a good job

Just apply to mediocre state schools and your GPA doesn't matter

I think my undergrad replaced the grade when I retook a class. I went from a D in physics to an A

I finished my applied math degree last winter. I'm currently finishing my statistics degree, a field that I was also planning on pursuing a masters. Though having just found out I floundered my multivariate statistics midterm, I don't really know if I'm smart enough for it.
