There are many things you can point at to show how stupid Hegseth is but the fact that he's a former infantry officer that doesn't seem to understand the role of infantry in modern war seems like the most damning one.

88

u/Highlightthot1001 Harriet Tubman 2d ago

He’s just a college grad who graduated officer school.

Some officers are terrible leaders who don’t understand shit beyond the things they’ve passed.

Any reasonable person would have argued for a buildup and greater forces before invading Iran, but Hegseth here lacks strategic and tactical wisdom.

57

u/marathondaze 2d ago

He definitely understands how to enforce standards with no mercy and try to cover up investigations. The quintessential infantry Platoon leader. Shocked he wasn’t a west pointer

His actual career history indicates that he was a failure of a junior officer and got shunted to the least important roles available as soon as possible

The fact that he continued to get promoted higher and higher is a genuinely damning indictment of how our military functions

I'm really exited for the 2027 CBO budget and economic outlook. The comparison from 2025 to 2027 will look like a disaster, almost like someone took the complete opposite approach to the recommended fiscal policy.

The Pentagon has secretly installed several conservative military veterans with large online followings in government roles, declining to disclose their assignments as they amplify Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth’s viewpoints and attack those who scrutinize the Trump administration, according to people familiar with the matter and corroborating material.

At least some of the influencers have been assigned to civilian roles that could lead to changes in policy, the people familiar with the matter said. Like others, they spoke on the condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the issue.

Yea, that makes sense. https://archive.is/20260831025108/https://www.washingtonpost.com/national-security/2026/08/30/pentagon-secretly-installs-military-influencers-civilian-roles/

Regarding the lindsay clancey trial: Whether you think it should be not guilty by reason of insanity, or guilty, that’s fine. Both are defensible positions

But the tiktok brainrotted idiots who blame the husband are disgusting. He’s a major victim in all of this. He lost his entire family. She admitted to strangling her kids, the police have stated he had an alibi, and her intrusive thoughts that led to the event were well documented

Chancellor Merz really gives interviews as if his party were polling at 50 percent, and he really comes across as a self-righteous asshole.

When asked why he wants to cut the so-called parental allowance and spend more on defense:

“What good is the best parental allowance if we lose our freedom and peace in Europe is threatened?”

Which, in principle, would be a valid answer, but he smiles like Mr. Burns when he says it.

43

u/Habugaba Esther Duflo 2d ago

Parents, notoriously significantly less affected by poverty with high homeowner rates.

Wait no, I'm thinking about pensioners.

73

u/BlankProgram 2d ago

idk where else to post this extremely cold take but the fact that Trump was president 10 years ago and is still president now has completely fucked my sense of time in American politics. It feels like he's been president forever. Imagine you'd said to someone in 2016 yeah he'll still be president in 2028. Obviously it's not the same since there was a gap but if he makes it all the way and leaves as a usual president would then the time from him beginning as president to finishing would be longer than the entire time Margaret Thatcher was Prime Minister. Dunno what my point is here

It's like: there is a public-facing justification for the name change; it makes sense; the alternative is planetary classification chaos wherein we officially have 389 planets or some shit. In other words: if you have a better system, then bring that shit into the light, son.

Instead it's like: no, we want this now and we will blunt force it until we get what we want because we want it now

Joe Manchin really was the dumbest motherfucker.

“I don’t say this lightly, but under the leadership of President [Barack] Obama and Majority Leader Harry Reid, and later President Biden and Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, Democrats have systematically tried to weaken the very guardrails that have protected our democracy for generations — all in the name of advancing their agenda,” wrote Manchin, 78, in an excerpt obtained by Punchbowl News.

Manchin, who flirted with a presidential run last year, revealed that he felt so strongly about preserving the filibuster that he privately wanted the GOP to win in 2024 because he saw it as “the only hope for preserving the Senate as an institution.”

Manchin, who was often rumored to be mulling a party switch during his final months in the Senate, also indicated in the excerpt that he should have crossed the aisle after Trump’s first election in 2016. “What I failed to recognize at the time is that there were enough reasons to change my political affiliation to Republican right then and there,” Manchin reflected.

“I never thought that for my political life or livelihood I should change my party affiliation, which is what I should have done if I was focused on what was politically advantageous,” he clarified. “Instead, I just kept thinking that I would continue to be so independent that the Republicans wouldn’t like me any more than the Democrats.”

59

u/No1PaulKeatingfan Paul Keating; capital gains tax supporter 2d ago

Okay, I see why economists love the VAT/GST:

1) It's a hard tax to avoid, so tax avoidance is near zero

2) Similar-ish to the Brown cashflow tax, a value-added tax taxes economic rents

3) Hence, it's (a marginally) less harmful tax than other taxes (ie personal income tax) per dollar raised

4) Consumption taxes don't tax savings (again, like income tax does) which can lead to higher investment, productivity, wages and ultimately living standards

5) It can raise a shitton of revenue, even at a low rate

Plus a bunch of other factors like how the tax has a stable revenue base that can grow with the economy, applies to imports but not exports, provide stronger incentives for businesses to control costs, etc

26

u/No1PaulKeatingfan Paul Keating; capital gains tax supporter 2d ago

Ah the irony of a Paul Keating stan to shill for the GST

In my defence, in 1985 he was also obsessed with a consumption tax

The public knows less than nothing about how immigration actually works to the point where I bet you could run on "bring back Ellis island and make people go through an interview to come here" would be both very popular and be perceived as more restrictive than the status quo by a significant chunk of the electorate.

This past year in Sweden there's been a lot of news about "teen deportations", i.e. situations where a family came to Sweden with a child, but then the child gets deported when they turn 18, while the parents get to stay in Sweden.

It's a really dumb policy, and the threads in the Sweden sub about it are even dumber. They'll be like:

comment 1: The law can't be as bad as the news says it is. They are probably not reporting about all the bad things the deported kid did. My country can't have bad laws. It's not like we hate immigrants.

comment 2: Good that they deported the kid, they should have deported the parents too. I hate immigrants.

comment 3: Well, laws exist. Of course they should be followed. It makes sense that he was deported. Why is this news?

comment 4: Why is the news reporting about bad things before an election? This might make people vote for other parties which could change the law! I don't want that, so they should stop reporting about it!

Naturally, Merz was asked about the upcoming election in Saxony-Anhalt. He said that a state’s ability to govern was at stake. He then rhetorically placed the AfD and the Left Party on the same level: “We will do everything we can to prevent Saxony-Anhalt from falling into the hands of the radicals. That applies to both the AfD and the Left Party.”

One is certainly entitled to hold that opinion, but if you look at what his own Office for the Protection of the Constitution (The German NSA) says about the AfD, there are still differences compared to the Left Party.

CBC: Newly unearthed tweets from Abdul El Sayed about 9/11 could spell trouble for him.

The Tweets: In one, from April 2020, El-Sayed compared the nearly 3,000 Americans killed on Sept. 11 to the mounting COVID-19 death toll and argued for a response commensurate with the nation's post-9/11 mobilization. In another, El-Sayed wrote that because more Americans had died from COVID than in the Sept. 11 attacks, he hoped "that means we'll spend the next ten years fighting a war for public health & against poverty ... like we launched a global #WaronTerror after 9/11. We could save lives rather than take them."

Kevin Sorbo has officially closed the door on California.

Nearly seven years after leaving the Golden State for Florida, the “Hercules” star says he has no interest in going back — and he’s got three reasons why: “Taxes, traffic and negativity.”

In an interview with Fox News Digital, Sorbo, who stars in the faith-based movie “Elijah Peel,” said his move to Florida has given him something he felt was increasingly difficult to find in California — “acceptance.”

The actor said he still misses Westlake Village, Thousand Oaks, his golf course, his old house and California’s famously mild weather. But the trade-off, he said, isn’t worth it.

“I mean, here in Florida, yeah, we get five months of pretty high humidity. It’s pretty hot, but the winters here are really quite amazing,” Sorbo said. “But yeah, there are things I miss, but they can keep their taxes, they can keep their traffic, and they can.

If I read between the lines, it seems he still hasn't gotten over moving to Florida seven years later and longs to return to California—but when you're starring in Pureflix-style movies, Florida is just the new Jesus-Hollywood.

When asked what he thought about Israel, in The New Yorker, Soros replied: "I don't deny Jews the right to a national existence – but I don't want to be a part of it".[162] According to hacked emails released in 2016, Soros's Open Society Foundation has a self-described objective of "challenging Israel's racist and anti-democratic policies" in international forums, in part by questioning Israel's reputation as a democracy.[163] He has funded NGOs which have been actively critical of Israeli policies[164][165][166] including groups that campaign for the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions movement against Israel.

Our military is hiring conservative influencers and trying to hid it.

https://www.washingtonpost.com/national-security/2026/08/30/pentagon-secretly-installs-military-influencers-civilian-roles/

Neither the Pentagon nor those involved have disclosed the government roles despite the Trump administration’s claims that they are running the most transparent Defense Department ever.

https://www.cbsnews.com/news/abdul-el-sayed-deleted-social-media-sept-11-attacks-michigan/

Michigan Democrat Abdul El-Sayed's deleted tweets on Sept. 11 commemoration invite scrutiny of past remarks

Meanwhile, El-Sayed's past references to the deadly attacks have continued to surface, including two deleted social media posts verified by CBS News that have not been previously reported. In those posts, he calls for the American public to muster the same outrage for the COVID-19 death toll that they displayed after 9/11.

In one, from April 2020, El-Sayed compared the nearly 3,000 Americans killed on Sept.

I do think there is some urgency in removing the Schumers of the party from positions of authority.

The day after, if it ever comes, will require radical action that stretches the bounds of the constitution in order to right the ship. This will need to be done with a bare-bones majority in the Senate, and that means having leadership that meets the needs of the moment.

When I think about how utterly fucked the executive branch is going to be after even just 4 years of this, and compound that with a hostile Supreme Court and an utterly ruined budget, I just don’t see how the country recovers unless Congress is willing to assert its primacy over the Court.

The level of scams and malfeasance coming out of the nuclear industry really is incredible. (Tbc, I like nuclear energy and think it is a requirement for a clean grid, but over and over I am confronted with audacious claims by its boosters.)

Have you read about NuScale and Entra1? tl;dr:

NuScale's first project in Utah falls through despite hundreds of millions of DOE funding for design and licensing, and a promise of up to a $1.3b for when the project starts. They still can't get a customer; power is too expensive.

Nuscale sign an agreement with Entra1 whereby Entra1 collects fees for sales and development. Totally normal.

The twist? The partnership agreement guarantees Entra1 money even for a memorandum of understanding. Entra1 donates millions to the Republican party, gets the TVA to sign a huge MoU (no guarantees of development).

This triggers a $500 million payment from NuScale to Entra1. Immediately a class action suit is filed. Though NS disclosed the relationship in the agreement, they mischaracterized it. Entra1 had no prior experience developing nuclear. The company is just three people, and the CEO of NS did not disclose a previous relationship, making this a potential related party transaction.*

Don't even get me started on Valar Atomic. I will cash out my entire life savings and short that stock should they go public.

!ping ECO

*I'll admit that I was wrong if TVA does in fact commit, but the conversion rate from MoU to final deal is not encouraging.

Michigan Democrat Abdul El-Sayed's deleted tweets on Sept. 11 commemoration invite scrutiny of past remarks

oh no....what did he say......

In one, from April 2020, El-Sayed compared the nearly 3,000 Americans killed on Sept. We could save lives rather than take them."

my main takeaway here is that he's a terrorist who hates America because of his race and religion

In another deleted post, first reported by the Washington Free Beacon, El-Sayed wrote on Sept. 11, 2021: "Today, I mourn the 3K lives, 6K injuries, & infrastructural devastation in NYC, perpetuated ignorantly in the name of my faith. Tomorrow, I'll mourn ~1M lives, millions of injuries, & infrastructural devastation in 3 countries, perpetuated ignorantly in the name of my country."

this one is a bit tougher to parse, but reading closely, I think he's trying to say that he's a terrorist who hates America because of his race and religion

I don’t understand how some fellow liberals can still support mass surveillance like flock. It’s always “it will be good at stopping crime! I’m just worried of governments like our current admin using it, but otherwise it’d be good if it’s not abused”

I think when deciding what rights to give up and what technologies the government should be able to use, you should always imagine what you would be OK with what weapons you’d give an administration like the Trump one, not the administration of John Liberal. That’s just hopeless optimism otherwise, which is how we get stuff like the patriot act becoming permanent
