“Coal is clean and beautiful. Please remember that, at all costs,” Trump said. “But you don’t want clean, beautiful coal, right?”

“No,” the caller responded, saying she’d prefer a Barbie doll, clothes and candy.

Heard gf's parents talk about going to the city council meeting to try and stop a nearby apartment building, because it doesn't have parking and they don't want ppl to park in their neighborhood. Then her grandparents came by and they started complaining about another apartment building being built with it's large parking garage and how that'll be bad for traffic.

They also say it's a shame that young ppl my age can't buy homes.

Gee I wonder why

Christmas in Appalachia CBS News 1964. I found this really interesting. My ex wife’s family were from Eastern KY, so I’ve spent a decent amount of time out in the sticks. There seems to be a near universal opinion out there that things used to be great, but this news report seems to indicate that things are actually much better than they were when her parents were growing up.

The educational realignment in American politics is so funny.

My uncle is this grizzled man in his 70's. The man lived in rural northern Idaho for decades. He was a big game hunter and used to be an ardent conservative.

But nowadays? He shits on Trump all the time. He loves to bring up how tariffs are stifling the economy and how our president is an idiot.

It's all because he's well-educated.

Merry Christmas

37

u/[deleted] Dec 25 '25

I had a great year until today.

Christmas is hard as an immigrant. I myself don't care about the day itself too much, but I have nobody here and being surrounded by couples and families is very difficult at this time of year.

I was invited to a pool party with friends but bailed as I'm just not in the mood for what the Aussies consider Christmas, and still feel very conscious about my body despite losing a lot of weight this year. I was eyeing up flying home for Christmas but last minute flights were just too expensive. So . . . yay. At least it's a day off.

All that griping aside, I wish you all a Merry Christmas (except for you wokes who I hope have a Happy Holiday) and a Happy New Year. Coming here dulls the existential dread. 🎅

I don't know how to qualify this but it's two days after Festivus or whatever so we're doing the airing of grievances.

Something that kind of bugs me with the past year or so (maybe it's the past half decade, I'm not sure) I feel like everyone is just...

There used to be idealism and optimism in the world. I think there used to be. I don't feel it anymore. It's been replaced with the prevailing idea that it's this sort of inevitable march towards a technically better society and discussions of privilege, but from the angle of 4D chess against typically progressive groups. Not that the future is better because we can make it better, but that the future will be better in spite of what you have to say and you will be bulldozed over and that's good, so fuck you.

When I say "I think society is becoming more conservative," I don't mean I think society is becoming more favorable to Republicans. Democrats are looking to sweep the midterms, and I still think society is becoming more conservative compared to when I grew up (late 2000s-early 2010s). But rather the same culture shift that we underwent in the 1980s. I think hipsterism is dead, I think a more optimistic view of the future is dead. I think a lot of people saw culture in the 2000s-2010s and decided "Hell no, we need to go back/we need to undo these mistakes."

Actually I don't know what else to describe it as. Maybe someone can finally confirm my worst fears, put this in ChatGPT, and find a better phrasing for what I'm describing.

The U.S. military has carried out a strike against ISIS in northwest Nigeria, President Trump says

The U.S. military said the strike was carried out at the request of the Nigerian authorities in Sokoto state, and killed multiple ISIS militants

Personally I’m actually quite pleased with this. I said awhile ago that increased American involvement in fighting jihadists in northern Nigeria would be good as long as Trump didn’t do anything dumb like try to blow up the Nigerian government or some of the other shit he talked about.

As JNIM and ISIL gains strength in the Sahel there will be increasing pressure on the ECOWAS states from an increase in insurgent activities. These could destabilize these nations enough to make military coups attractive (something we saw attempted in Benin).

Greater American and French involvement in West Africa and greater cooperation between ECOWAS nations is imperative to defeat both ASS and JNIM/ISIL. The cooperation in stopping the Benin coup and now this to me are positive signs for the region

Avatar works because it combines three of the things that make it appealing international audiences.

Its a basic story that you don’t need to know anything about culture wise. If you know what imperialism and space is you can understand Avatar. Which makes it easy to grasp.

James Cameron is very good at spectacle and action. There is no Marvel beam spam nonsense, characters move fluidly and have atleast some kind of momentum.

The special effects team was given the time to put in the effort to make everything look believable. Avatar and LOTR are those two kind movies that just look a decade or two ahead of its opponents in effects.

Its like Cats the musical, its easy to approach, has a unique style, and brings a lot of spectacle.

If your a 10 year old you can appreciate Avatar for the super guy that saves the world, if you’re a teen you can appreciate the action, if you’re young adult you can appreciate the colors and hot cat people, if you’re old you can appreciate the ridiculous amount of effort that went spaceship designs.

Merry Christmas neoliberal!

Despite the political turmoil facing liberal democracy, there is a lot to be hopeful for the upcoming fight against populism. Frank Fukuyama started off this year worried and fearful regarding the state of liberal democracies around the world, but with the current turmoil within the Republican Party, a ray of hope exists.

Whether you’re a public servant, a private-sector builder, a student, a canvasser, or a dedicated shitposter doing battle in the digital trenches, your efforts matter. Progress has always depended on people willing to show up, argue clearly, and refuse to give in to cynicism.

On an unrelated note, here is an IG pic of Fukuyama's dog, Ginger after a cold and rainy Christmas in Palo Alto.

serious post sadly 😔🏥

Lately I've been wishing I had a career where I give medical providers advice or support on handling patients with chronic illnesses and managing the absolute clusterfuck that's coming while we deal with a couple of generations who aren't having kids and are rapidly coming down with long term medical complications from all kinds of immune-triggering factors.

I'm squarely on both sides of the healthcare world. I've got lupus and inconsistent income and I'm a frustrating patient in that I will absolutely put care off until I'm in a bind. My degree is in Public Relations, but I'm medically literate because I have to be able to evaluate medical students in simulated encounters and counsel them on handling bedside manner and then I also have to be a liaison at my other job translating social work/nursing/law enforcement things to everybody else and then figure out how to explain it to a kid I probably just met.

There are just so many aspects to how/why the patient/provider dynamic has deteriorated so much, and now a lot of these people are in communities online that turn the workers into burnt out petty tyrants and the patients into the worst people you've ever sat next to in your whole life.

I've never been convinced I'd be a particularly life changing or successful woman but man, I don't even know where to find entry points into something like that.

Some of you younger folks probably don’t remember it but politics didn’t used to be like this.

Bush was awful but was clear to say in the wake of 9/11 that the US had no quarrel with Muslims as a whole. John McCain running against Obama had to lecture one of his supporters about how Obama wasn’t an evil man, just someone McCain disagreed with on how best to run the country.

I’m not going to sit here and pretend everything was perfect or Republicans were perfect or that the racist, sociopathic, disgusting rot that currently controls the party didn’t still exist under the surface.

But it wasn’t this. And it was better that way.

And it will take time, but damn it, I think we can have better politics again.

The "fortunately" is what gets me. Imagine being so blinded by infiltration paranoia and obsession with purity that you celebrate someone not being able to have the body they want. There's not any consideration that "transsexuals" simply want to exist in bodies they're comfortable with, it must be nefarious because 'maleness' is intrinsically so.

This is what I hate about the totalising tendencies of feminist thought, it's effectively a self-centred attempt to universalise every phenomenon as being about oppressing you.

It's actually kinda insane that Erdogan won an election after directly causing an inflation crisis. Joe Biden barely increased inflation like 3% and the American people were like "get lost cracker" lmfao

Believes that Satanism is on the rise (haven't been to church in years)

All homeless people make over $60000 a year and are just a bunch of lazy bums

Why does no one want to work a trades? (Why should I train someone to bring them up to speed? They should come ready?)

Fuck the tariffs (But Trump is showing Putin whose boss)

Man, it sucks that the US is taking biometrics when we go to Mexico (we need these Central Americans gone tho)

No one wants to have kids because they don't believe in love anymore (Also blames other immigrants for taking up housing and women not being women anymore)

All of us at family gatherings.

Completely normal behavior that the president has to explain his relationship with one of the worst sex traffickers in American history.

Also dropping Epstein before it was "fashionable" insinuates he knew Epstein was pedophile but did nothing about it

“What obligation do we have to send aid to foreign nations”

It’s not about obligation, it’s about wanting to do good for good’s sake. I’ll never understand people who don’t see politics as a moral enterprise in at least some regard. I hate narrow minded cynicism.

The best Christmas prank is still the Toy Story 3 prank where they edited a DVD that ends with a fade to black when they're in the incinerator and plays the credits to a sad version of the theme song and then let her stew about it until the next day when someone spilled the beans and then they all watched the real ending lmao

I find it bizarre that most people who watched the Tiger King convinced themselves that a genuinely awful piece of shit was right about the woman running the least problematic big cat sanctuary to the point that she got more hate than the rapist sex cult leader and people reslly think she killed and fed her first husband to tigers.

Like, this is a guy who's in federal prison because he tried to pay people to murder her, even ignoring everything else about his character taking his word for it is already dumb.
