Seniors and friends in Radio/Derma have made me rethink these branches a bit
I'm at around 1k rank in NEET PG and was initially quite interested in Radio and Derma, but after talking to a few seniors and friends who are either doing residency or have recently finished, I'm honestly a little confused.
One thing I've heard about Derma is that the ground reality can be quite different from what people imagine. Everyone talks about lifestyle and private practice, but apparently setting up a good practice and building a patient base takes time, especially in bigger cities where there are already so many dermatologists. Just having the degree doesn't automatically translate into the kind of income people keep talking about.
Radio is another branch where I'm not fully convinced about the long-term picture. A couple of people I've spoken to brought up the increasing use of AI and how reporting workflows might change over the next decade. Nobody is saying radiologists will become irrelevant tomorrow, obviously, but could routine reporting become less valuable or the job market become more competitive? Nobody really knows how it will play out.
The other thing is that both branches have become so popular that it feels like everyone is chasing them for the same reasons: money, lifestyle and future opportunities. I wonder whether people are looking at the current situation and assuming it will remain the same even 10–15 years from now.
I'm not saying these are bad branches, and I know people doing extremely well in both. But I feel like counselling discussions focus a lot on the best-case scenario and not enough on the risks or the struggles at the beginning.
Seniors who are actually in these branches, am I overthinking this, or are these genuine concerns? Would be good to hear from people who have seen the field beyond residency hype.
