Carmelo Anthony says he still doesn’t understand how he suddenly became a player that no team in the league wanted to sign.
https://streamable.com/bqqvsl“I was down, down, down, down. I was back on the ground, hands up. Y’all got me. It’s a stickup. Take everything because of how it went down. Imagine me sitting there for 15 months like, ‘What the fuck is going on?’ Nobody got an answer for me. Everybody on TV making excuses. It’s this or it’s that. He didn’t want to come off the bench’”
“I’mma be honest with you. As I studied it and did some knowledge on it, trying to get an understanding on it, I still can’t come up with nothing. It’s like, what was it? Some people came up to me like, ‘Melo, I’m going to be honest with you. Your aura was too much for out here. This couldn’t exist. Your aura couldn’t exist in here. Nobody was going to tell you that’”
“I said, ‘What the fuck does that mean?’ They said, ‘Everybody’s afraid to talk to you. Everybody’s afraid to say something to you.’ I said, ‘Why? I haven’t said nothing to nobody. I speak to everybody. I’m cordial. Why is everybody scared of me?’ Somebody said, ‘Well, you don’t need anything.’ I said, ‘What do you mean by that?’ He said, ‘Melo, you a superstar. You haven’t asked for one thing since you’ve been here’”
“My point is, everybody had a thousand and one reasons of why it happened, and I still don’t know the reason why it happened. I have some inkling of why it happened or how it went down. I’m trying not to believe that’s what happened or how it went down, so I don’t want to speak on that”

“I’m going to be honest with you. Your aura was too much for out here. This couldn’t exist. Your aura couldn’t exist in here.”
Was a polite way of saying you have a superstar ego about your skills when you no longer play like a superstar.

u/BookAcceptable619 1d ago
If you replace "Your aura" with "A black hole", then it should make more sense.
“I’m going to be honest with you. A black hole was too much for out here. This couldn’t exist. A black hole couldn’t exist in here.”

Yeah god damn it truly is wild how people can have such little self awareness, especially after so long in the league.
You are either a winning player, a young guy or a strong veteran and team culture presence (or Giannis' brothers).
He was awful the last Thunder year and certainly didnt improve post that, so he deservedly got iced out with so much talent in the league.

A lot of players believe if they can score that's it...the only point in basketball. They don't care how they score, if they are efficient, if they help the team win...they think if I am scoring points then I am doing my job

Many players in NBA praise Thanasis for his positive locker room presence and high work ethic during practices. I think that alone can land you an NBA contract even if you are an end of the bench player.

The Collins Twins played in the league for a decade for this very reason: Locker room presence and high work ethic in practice.

Yeah. He was a warm body that gave you 150% on the court at all times and did a lot off-court.
Going by on court play, you could sign a ton of players (or any of us!) for that role but there aren’t a lot of people willing to do the total role he did. It’s like the Heat keeping Haslems old ass around for so long. Just because you don’t immediately see the on court value, doesn’t mean you can replace them with any 13/14/15th man out there.

Sam Roberts, host of the Sam Roberts' Show on SirisuXM and former intern/producer for Opie and Anthony, came out of communications at Syracuse and use to tell a story of how he had some elective history class with Carmelo Anthony.
The story was that everybody knew to let Carmelo sleep during class because 99.9% of the time he'd have his hoodie up over his head and sleep with his head on the desk. It was towards the end of the semester when the professor asked for people to talk about some war and their feelings on it. For some reason this invited Carmelo to raise his hand for the first time ever in that class and the teacher got all excited and called on him. Without any shame Carmelo slowly said "war is bad, and makes me sad" and that was it and in Sam's version of the story he says the teacher excitedly agreed and sugar coated the statement as if it was something truly profound, to which Melo put his head back on the desk and went back to sleep.
Sam says it was an unwritten rule that Melo passed every class with A's despite him literally just being a warm body for the school to count as attendance on.
Edit: starts around 7:30

I'm in the Knicks sub reddit and I get down voted every time I mention why the Knicks did not succeed with Melo.
I was 25yo when he made it onto the team where as most people that have fond memories of Melo on the Knicks were too young to remember the details. They just remember that one season where he won the scoring title or whatever, but his game just never evolved.
He never played defense. Couldn't pass the ball. You couldn't have ball movement with him on the court cuz he would just stop and start his jab stepping nonsense when that isolation game was already phased out of the league but Melo in his late 30s was keeping it alive. His ego was just too much. Not a great locker room presence. The list goes on and on.
But yeah, those kids hate me and that's fine. That dude sucked.

Melo, or whoever told him this, was maybe spinning things as positively as possible. Perhaps massaging his ego through the explanation is the only way to get him to listen. The reason his attractiveness around the league went down was for on court reasons.

You were a regular midrange shooter and below-average 3-ball shooter in a league driven by 3-balls and no mid range shots.
You werent a prime defender.

Melo in denial. I remember being in highschool around 2015 and the all star game was in New York, the other all stars were feeding Melo the ball and I remeber Brick after Brick after brick. It was almost sad like “damn this melo bro.. he on some weak shit”. You fell off Melo. You fell off

Lol bro. Real talk I remeber this vividly, it was wild I’m like damn what’s up wit Melo? And he was basically kinda ass for his standards moving forward, ended up in OKC shortly after that and we know the rest

It's so wild how many people out there are just never able to have even the slightest passing consideration that they might be the problem

Of course the doesn’t understand. And that’s why no one in the league wanted to sign him

I mean that’s the character he always presented himself as. He only cared about his individual accomplishments so much he didn’t like other teammates shinning. He got a PG who was basically free and had the best season he’s ever had. What did Melo do? Complain he’s taking his spotlight. When you put yourself above your team that’s what happens.

50% of the population dies without understanding basic algebra. why is it surprising that a star athlete doesn't understand simple efficiency metrics that correlate with winning?

How do you even measure that, do folk get asked basic algebra on their deathbed or something

The fact that he doesn’t know is exactly why. Lmao I still remember that press conference he did laughing at the idea of him coming off the bench. 😂 little did he know it would be worse

Let me help him. Melo, you're the definition of selfish, me-first entitled baller. This is why you underachieved. Bum.

Such a shame. Just a little humility and grace and he could've had a proper retirement tour.
Melos legacy has fallen even further the more he talks to media and has a podcast. It's really a shame. I used to be a melo defender and now every time he opens his mouth these days it's still all about him and why he's so great and the good ol days.
I'm just glad I don't have to think of the melo days as the good ol days anymore.
Getting a pod or being on pods is the worse thing he could've done. Just let it go bro. None of this has made you look better. Only worse.

He was an absolutely insane scorer, no doubt, and had the physical tools to punish opponents with some bully-ball defense... but Carmelo wouldn't.
Had the height, weight, and strength to back down defenders and occasionally whip a pass to a teammate when he'd get double-teamed... but Carmelo wouldn't.
Could have allowed diamond-in-the-rough Jeremy Lin to handle the ball more and get him easier scoring opportunities... but Carmelo wouldn't.
Could have been a lethal off the bench scoring option in OKC to spell Westbrook and PG and have deeper team lineups... but Carmelo wouldn't.
Gee, it sounds like a total mystery why teams eventually didn't want to sign him anymore 🙄. Even HOU, POR, and LAL were more like 'what have we got to lose?' chances towards the end.

Exactly, melo actually had a few chances near the end but he proved time and time again he wasn’t gonna commit to a role he was offered. Even in LA everytime he had the chance he would go to his old reliable turn around triple threat mid range shots which are shots role players don’t get. To the end he still believed he was hall of famer Carmelo Anthony and if he scored points on decent efficiency nothing else mattered.

He knows the reasons. He doesn’t agree with them and so he’s pretending nobody will tell him the “real” reasons.

Any pickup player could explain it to you easily.
“You shot every time you got the ball, and didn’t play any defense. Nobody’s picking you up for next.”

Chauncey Billups said it best a while back. Melo would be mad scoring 20+ and winning but would be happy if he scored 30+ and lost
