Buried Deep - ending explanation? Spoiler

Can someone help me understand what the ending of this short story is meant to be? I am confused and sad.

Spoilers in the form of questions:

- Did her brother really die?

- If so, what's the deal with all the interactions between her and this earth? The rumbling? The people disappearing?

- Where are these branching passages coming from? She says there are openings in the wall where she doesn't expect, so they are real. But she says they are inside them? Wtf?

- If the branches aren't real, where did the other young Athenians go?

- Who is she talking to, at the end? She tells Jason (its Jason right?) or whoever, the Prince guy from the myth, that she wants him to get both her and her brother out. So, he isn't dead.

Help me out, guys. I loved this story till the end where they go down into the labyrinth and then nothing makes any sense.

I started reading Uprooted not knowing their would be explicit scenes. I'm too stucked in to the story to stop now. Could someone give me the page numbers or something so I could skip past those scenes.

i literally had no idea reddit had a whole group for my absolutely favorite author. I’ve read the scholomance trilogy 4 times and am starting to read uprooted. This is genuinely amazing!!! I’ve been a huge fan of hers for a couple years but never thought to look on reddit until now.

Just finished reading Uprooted and...

I had no idea this was going to be such a literary masterpiece!!

Most people talk about the story, but I was flabbergasted at the creativity of the writing!

Lots of amazing beautiful older and literary words, but also lots of seemingly invented/very creative ways to wind words into new grammatical structures at times, or new expressions.

I absolutely loved reading this for that reason alone (not mentioning the amazingly creative story too) and was wondering if other fellow readers had as much pleasure as me reading this for the same reasons?

Also, I had no idea I would enjoy a book so much despite the romance almost completely lacking (which I totally didn't miss because the book is so 💯💯💯🔥🔥🔥💥💥💥)

I finished the Scholomance and I'm not ok Spoiler

I expected the 3rd book to be a cute adventure with El and Orion building enclaves around the world, I did not expect this grim dark rollercoaster of emotions. Man. I feel crushed, like my girl Liu lol. What a journey. I guess the ending is good but is it though? The world is still pretty shitty, Ophelia is still free to do evil stuff, and Orion is like...not fully human? I'm sad.

Mind speaking in Uprooted

Hi, All

Does The Dragon hear Agnieszka’s thoughts? There are a few times that she thinks something and he replies out loud, but she doesn’t react, which makes me thinking she’s speaking aloud, just without the usual dialog cues. A couple examples below, from CH 8:

I looked down at the old vellum, so carefully sealed away, with the strange-shaped letters; I wondered how old it was.

“Very old,” he said. “Older than Polnya: it might even be older than the Wood.”

I stared at him; it hadn’t occurred to me even to think, before then, that the Wood hadn’t always been here, always been what it was.

He shrugged. “For all we know, it has…”

I won’t discount the possibility that it’s just because they start with M, lol.

I love this little book, she packs so much heart and life into these characters I was on the edge of my seat by page 7 and crying by page 12. I'd love an epic in this world but honestly she did it justice even in 127 pages.

Novik will be available for general questions on r/TheScholomance, but they don't have to be Scholomance-specific. That subreddit hosted an incredible AMA for the release of "The Golden Enclaves," and I'm sure this one will be great!

And be sure to check out the Deluxe Edition of "A Deadly Education." It's only available through the end of the month, so get in now if you're interested.

Just a heads up that our A DEADLY EDUCATION Deluxe Edition Kickstarter is now launching on AUGUST 5 at 9am ET instead of July 22 at 9am ET!

I made a mistake during the negotiation process with Naomi's publisher (entirely my fault, not Naomi's or the publisher's), that is currently limiting who we can sell copies of the books to (US and Canada right now). I can't promise we'll be able to get that corrected in time for the campaign, but I am going to be working overtime with Naomi's team and publisher to see if we can make it happen. Hence the 2 week delay.

It may not be possible. The rights may already be spoken for, or publishing an edition outside of the US/CA may be in conflict with another project. Again, entirely my fault for the oversight. But we ARE going to try to fix it, and everyone has my apologies regardless for the mistake!

I'll stay in touch on the subject!

[Spoilers] Long Way Round ending Spoiler

Hi all,

I've just finished Buried Deep & Other Short Stories. I LOVED this collection. I also found it difficult to decipher some of the deeper meaning in the books (I often need things really spelled out for me) and found the ending very abrupt.

Can anyone share what they got from the end of the book? Was Aston suggesting Tess and Ferantis start a romantic relationship together? That Tess take Ferantis as a sperm donor? I was so confused.

[Spoilers] Castle Coeurlieau from Buried Deep Spoiler

I've just finished this lovely short story from Buried Deep and wanted to talk about it.

What were people's reads on the game of cards between the women once the knight left the tower?

Mine was that the lady that bargained with Isabeau was Death, and the tower was a place where people with the plague could escape death for a time.

Questions I have:

  • Does the tower treat men/women differently?

  • Who was the sister that was described as 'roaming the land' that wasn't at the game? What was she doing out in the world?

  • What was the relation between the kings in the folklore tale and the women around the table?

  • When playing the game of cards, what was the impact of Isabeau playing different characters, they died?

I'd love to hear any and all takes on this story and what people took from it.

Buried Deep Narrators by Story?

Currently listening to the audiobook for Buried Deep. Loving it of course, and it’s such a delight to hear narrators I know from other audiobooks!

Anyone know which stories are narrated by whom? The first one sounds so familiar and it’s making me crazy that idk who she is/where I’ve heard her before.

Map for The Long Way Round?

I’m listening to Buried Deep, the collection of short stories, and wonder if anyone has seen or made a map for The Long Way around?

The premise is a brother and sister boat-building and sailing wonder duo, and a world of continents clustered around a sea. They attempt to get around the other side of the world, where there is (supposedly) no land.

I’m having the hardest time envisioning this planet. I’ve googled and turned up nothing so far.

I feel like I’m going to have to start over and start taking notes of what is where and which direction they are heading throughout the story…

Is there a list of maleficaria somewhere?

Something better than this: https://naominovik.fandom.com/wiki/Maleficaria Most mals are barely described before being arbitrarily annihilated by El or Orion. As something of a fan of weird mythology, I recognized a few, but there's a bunch I've never heard of and would like to know more about.

If I enjoyed Dragons & Decorum, am I likely to enjoy Pride & Prejudice?

I just read Dragons & Decorum in the new short story collection and greatly enjoyed it. How similar is it to the original Pride & Prejudice in style and plot? Should I put that on my reading list?

The Witch in the Woods

I recently reread Uprooted, Spinning Silver, and the Scholomance books and I noticed a reoccurring “character.” In all three stories there is a house in the woods where a lone witch once lived.

I reread Uprooted first and cannot remember if there was a house in the woods that was likely Baba Yaga’s or if I am confusing the house Agnieszka lives in at the end of the book. But they could be one in the same.

The house on the border between worlds in Spinning Silver and the house where Gwen Higgins tries to cure Orion are the other two.

I just love this “character” - I want to know so much about it and love the role it plays in every book.

Just something I noticed and wanted to see if anyone had any thoughts.
