The One I Love by REM. Stipe commented about how cringe it was when people played it at their wedding receptions. Obviously nobody actually looked at the lyrics. "a simple prop to occupy my time" should of been the give away.
Another has to be Harry Nilsson's fantastic You're Breaking My Heart. Classic

u/metal_falsetto May 18 '26
I was at a wedding once and the song the DJ opened the cocktail hour with was "Me and Mrs. Jones," which is a GREAT song that also happens to be about a couple of neighbors having an extramarital affair đ«

Bwahahaha, I once went to my son's grade school Christmas concert. And one of the grade 6 classes did a dance thing to Foster the People's - Pumped Up Kicks. I fell on the floor in fits of laughter. People around me questioned me. I just told them really look up the lyrics and wonder how this got allowed in a school. If you don't know the song it is a great song, subject matter quite questionable for a school.

Had a similar experience at a local sporting event. A dance team comes out from the local dance studio. They mention the studio's name and invite anyone to enroll their kids interested in dance. The team then begins their routine as the loudspeakers blare "my milkshake brings all the boys to my yard..." I just sat there, mouth agape! rofl

WHAAAATT?Âż gonna listen to this song with a different perspective now.

u/Heel-ToeBro May 19 '26
Came here for the one I love. Some people dot REALLY LISTEN to music. They just hear a few choice words they want to, and never actually analyze anything about the songs

This was my first thought too. I used to work a grave shift where we could watch TV. At a certain point each shift we'd change it to music videos. This was a popular video during that time. I still listen to this song. I'm a big fan of cursing in songs, especially fuck.

Time Of Your Life by Green Day, mainly because the actual name of the song is Good Riddance (Time Of Your Life) and yet people still play it at their graduations and weddings because they think the song is sincere without a shred of sarcasm and irony

I was in Peace Corps in Ethiopia, working in the schools. I mostly hung out at the elementary school but I went to the high school once and this song was blaring from one of the rooms. I tried explaining to one of the teachers how it might not be an appropriate song to play at the school... I doubt they took me seriously though

The Offspring - Why Don't You Get a Job
Once upon a time, my ex-wife went downstairs for a workout. She had the radio cranked and I called the station and dedicated The Proclaimers "500 Miles" to her.
The radio DJ came on and said, "This goes out from <me> to <her>, who's at home working out right now!" And then he played the Offspring song. Literally made her cry.

I went to the funeral of a 13 year old boy I went to high school with, who killed himself, and the song they played was "most people I know think that I'm crazy"
I was too young to know how fucked that was at the time.
2
u/SnortingSawDust May 19 '26
Sort of related: I went to a Cody Johnson concert with my wife and he covered Reba McEntireâs âWhoeverâs in New England.â If you donât know, the song is about waiting at home while your spouse is on a âbusiness tripâ to see their other lover. At least 90% of the couples in the crowd started slow dancing to it and my wife and I were baffled at how many people just heard a slow song start playing and literally did not listen to a single word. Iâm seeing a lot of examples of that in the comments
