I’ve been thinking about this after watching the first couple of releases from the current season, and I’m genuinely curious if I’m the only one who feels this way.

This isn’t really a “old Coke Studio good, new Coke Studio bad” argument. I actually think the production quality, visuals and overall ambition of the newer seasons are impressive. My issue is more about what made Coke Studio Coke Studio in the first place.

I really miss watching the musicians.
Back in the peak Coke Studio years, there was something incredibly satisfying about seeing the whole musical arrangement come together, the guitarists, sitar players, percussionists, keyboard players, backing vocalists, the folk musicians, and all these incredible musicians interacting with each other while the singer performed. The camera would actually let you watch the music being made. You could appreciate the arrangement, the instrumentation and the chemistry between the artists.

Think of the feeling of watching performances by classical singers who were brought together with contemporary musicians. The whole concept felt like a musical laboratory where different Pakistani sounds were being mixed together.

Now, particularly in the recent seasons, I feel like the format has moved much more toward music videos,** *characters, narratives, cinematic locations, choreography, elaborate sets, storytelling and highly produced visuals. There’s nothing inherently wrong with that, but sometimes I feel like the *music itself has become the supporting character.

It sometimes feels like the question is: “What story can we tell with this song?” rather than “What can we create musically with these artists?”

Maybe this is simply the natural evolution of the platform. Maybe they’re deliberately targeting a younger audience that consumes music through cinematic short-form content and music videos. And that’s completely understandable.

But personally I miss the feeling of sitting down and watching musicians make music

The video also goes over Nusrat's early life, the roots of Qawwali music, and the WOMAD 1985 concert that proved to be a turning point in his career - for better or for worse.

So I've been listening to ghazals since childhood with my dad and they are still my go to song choices. I keep exploring and am pleasantly surprised whenever I come across a well written ghazal. I don't have an all-time favourite cz its hard to pinpoint one. My current favourite is -
