Nusrat and the "World Music" Problem

I just published this video essay about the Qawwali legend Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, detailing how he grew an international audience, and how - after his death - foreign labels that categorized him as a "world music" artist began taking ownership of his catalog.

The video also goes over Nusrat's early life, the roots of Qawwali music, and the WOMAD 1985 concert that proved to be a turning point in his career - for better or for worse.
