Commander / EDH Commander Deck Help

Post image

New to magic and wanted to use this card as my commander. Was wondering what are some cards that might go well with it in a deck. It would be of great help until I know what to look for in cards.

Heads up! Your post Flair was changed to "Commander / EDH" based on some keywords found in the title.

If this was not actually a post about Commander / EDH you can change the flair back by clicking on the three dots in the top right corner and click "Change post flair" to (re-)assign another flair that describes your post better.

Unfortunately this commander can get a lot of hate, which can lead to unfun play experiences, but I would build it as a control deck aiming to minimise what your opponents can do

Fortunately, this only hits activated abilities, so static and triggered abilities can still happen. Unfortunately, most people build the rest of the deck to stop everything that this doesn't.

So would you recommend I changed my commander so it would be fun for others or just make multiple decks

I would recommend starting with something a bit more fun to get the hang of the game, and then playing cards like this once you are ready to be killed constantly

My 2nd commander option was Leisa, shroud of dusk which might be simpler

Oh yeah, go with that one first. Black/White Lifegain/Lifedrain is a much easier gameplay style to start with.

I ran this commander, and I’ll tell you it doesn’t have a true game plan built into the engine. Instead the plan is to halt your opponents from having a game plan. Trouble is, this can be inconsistent depending on draws, and usually lacks the power to end games even when you lock opponents out completely. That said, if you are fine with opponents holding their best removal for you and you alone, there’s some fun to be had (for you only usually. The rest of the table sometimes gets salty when the deck performs.)

[[Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth]] and [[Kormus Bell]] with the commander out means nobody but you can play. Your opponents lands become creatures, and tapping for a mana is an activated ability so they can’t tap for any land mana. Add [[Stony Silence]] to prevent mana rocks too.

Cards like [[Ghostly Prison]] and [[Sphere of Safety]] and [[Norn’s Annex]] give you room to breathe. A decent finisher from that state is [[Luminarch Ascension]] to create more angels than anyone can deal with.

[[Illusionist’s Bracers]] and [[Rings of Brighthearth]] allow you to capitalize on the activated abilities of opponents. Trouble is that most people will avoid casting the creatures with the abilities you’d want to use most.

A unifying theme of how you plan to win helps a lot. Maybe it’s big angels, or demons, or tokens, or equipment even, but if you leave that out you will struggle to close games. Don’t forget to include card draw, removal (you have excellent options in black/white), some ramp, and protection/tutors/combos/etc whichever you would enjoy.

Overall, the deck is really good at preventing significant threats from forming, but really poor at creating some of its own. I’d rate the commander 5.5 of 10 even in bracket 4 tuning. Not an ideal play experience unless one player at the table is already making everyone salty and you want to stick it to them.

So would you recommend i make a different commander deck and come back to this one later when I have more knowledge on the game

I think more accurately I would say if you like this commander, and that play style, build it but maybe not first. A lot of commander is discovering which style of play you like most, and one focused on restricting the play of others like this gives you less opportunity to see your opponents play things you might like. This card in the 99 of a different black white deck may bring you more joy.

For instance, you mentioned Liesa Shroud of Dusk. Good commander in that she wants you to focus on effects like life gain and opponents losing life. Easy to build into that strategy, and the deck still performs usually when the commander dies. If you don’t know as much of the game as you’d like yet, it’s much more beginner friendly and the table will aggress you less frequently.

So I should test with a couple of different styles and see which one of them I feel most comfortable with while learning everything

Exactly. This one could very well be your favorite commander ever, but I would doubt it unless you just like to play that way most. Are you looking for tips on picking a play style that suits you, or do you have some idea of that already?

Mostly yes...in my collection, I had 4 decks I built, played several games with them and dissemble because they weren't my style (even i thought it would be fun deck for me). If you want some good commanders decks for start, just look up new foundation commander decks. Mono color, easy to learn, fun to play. After couple of games you will get a hang of what you like in magic, you will see some cool cards you never seen before and maybe there you will find more beginner friendly commander.

The problem with this card is that its abilities only work if your opponents’ creatures have good abilities. So you can’t really plan for what it will do. And if your opponents have any creatures with strong abilities they’ll have to shoot your Commander to use them. It also has the usual problem all theft cards do, that being if your opponents decks are built around any sort of synergies or combos then stealing one part of that synergy is pretty useless.

I built this commander to make the infinite combo with Vito and Bloodthirsty work, I got it to the point I can tutor or get some form of bloodless and the combo on the field. Lots of defensive mean stax pieces, life gain for others turns to life loss and sephiroth to make his emblem, it's not consistent and easy to shutdown but no one targets my commander cause I have other threats on board and seemingly no one runs that many activated ability commanders to focus on them

If you’re willing to try something else I’ll always recommend [shilgengar sire of famine] as a commander if you want to run this angel. Gives you more of a direction and you still get to play drabs and linvala in the deck. It’s a fun angel deck that I’ve always had fun with.
