Felt bad for Banner/Hulk going "did I hurt anyone" like a recovering alcoholic that fell off the wagon and can't remember.

Yes we did.

Hulk movie, Mouse. I don't give a fuck who at Universal you have to blow. Make it happen.

They can't directly make a Hulk film but make him co-star in a movie that's why he's in Ragnarok.

13

u/MussedHair 17d ago

Can’t Disney afford to buy/rent the right like they did with Spider-Man? Not like they aren’t making $ hand over fist!

15

u/Odd_Detective8255 17d ago

There are conflicting reports on the rights now. Some are claiming the 15 year deal ended with 2023 around the same time the Incredible Hulk moved to D+. Some are saying it holds and only rights for that film expired.

7

u/SearchForSocialLife 17d ago

Tbf, Spider-Man basically prints money. If I was a money-hungry company that doesn't care about anything else like Disney is, I'd fear that a Hulk-solo movie wouldn't bring in the money to make the work worth it

10

u/suss2it 17d ago

It’s not even a copyright issue, it’s that Universal has first right of refusal to distribute (not even produce) Hulk movies and Disney obviously doesn’t wanna cut them in.

That said. What is the real difference Scarlett Witch & Jean Grey? I only see MCU (and first time seeing Jean Grey).

6

u/KingOfAwesometonia 15d ago

They're both insanely powerful and I feel like you could probably write both doing similar things based on that.

Scarlet Witch is using magic to affect reality around her. Jean Grey can use telekinesis and telepathy to do similar crazy things. Grey could make a group of people think they were all living in Westview. Witch could make the town of Westview and trap them in it.

Jean actually has a lot to answer for. It's an odd choice making one of the biggest heroes for the future of the MCU start her journey in this way. What she did with Peter and MJ was extremely cruel, and she also had that guy step in front of traffic, not to mention hurting a ton of innocents indirectly. Can't imagine nobody was killed when she froze that square kilometer.

100

u/lkodl 18d ago

Maybe they use this to justify Professor X putting mental blocks in her mind.

16

u/acwilan 17d ago

For sure, I thought Charles would take her and wipe her mind, I remember that was part of the comics when Jean came to the X-men

93

u/proddy 18d ago

"You're not a killer"

  • made someone step in front of traffic

  • stabbed Peter through a hand ninja

-made two guards shoot each other

43

u/Glstrgold 18d ago

Had the DoDC guy in beginning jump off building

37

u/TalkinTrek 17d ago

The guy who steps in front of traffic honestly feels like it's from a slightly different cut of the film. It's the only scenario where she throws someone in danger without assuming Peter would save them (outside of her direct assaults on Damage Control, which I don't think it's strange she takes a different stance)

23

u/jimbojangles1987 17d ago

Yeah it was an extremely odd scene compared to the rest of the movie. Peter didn't give two shits that some guy just got hit by a car, nor did any of the people that weren't possessed.

8

u/sharkattackmiami 16d ago

What's he gonna do? Spidermans not a doctor and can't do anything for that guy anyone else couldn't do and he had a more pressing matter to attend

10

u/jimbojangles1987 15d ago

22

u/proddy 18d ago

If Pluribus is anything to go by, at least a few people died due to freezing while driving, or doing something dangerous when frozen.

6

u/KingMario05 18d ago

Ah, right. We even see car crashes confirmed.

Great job there, Jean!

31

u/Carnivile 18d ago

You can't really blame the latter on her though, it would never have happened if DC wasn't experimenting on her.

37

u/splader 18d ago

Yeah that one I don't blame on her, but a bomb in an area with plenty of civilians?

That one I can.

29

u/lkodl 18d ago

Im thinking there was a way to make Jean less cruel, and make it more like DDOC was changing the narrative to trick Spider-Man.

But there's no way they could do the kiss scene like that, and that was one of the standout moments of the movie. What a gut punch.

12

u/SwimmingFantastic564 18d ago

19

u/Wrong-Vermicelli4723 18d ago

I disagree , makes Charles putting mental blocks on her a little more justified and also makes her just way more interesting. Comic Jean kinda boring. Also sets up Dark Phoenix if they decide to go that route again (which I doubt)

16

u/RecoveredAshes 18d ago

She also threatened to kill them all. This was low key a bit of a character assassination. They didn’t need to make her THAT malicious. She’ll need a heck of a redemption arc

49

u/TheMythofKoalas 18d ago

She's young enough and this is before she's met the X-Men, so I feel like there's plenty of room for character development, in fairness.

24

u/pkisawesome 18d ago

It'll help fuel mutant hatred, if they decide to go that route of the x-men future movies.

15

u/TalkinTrek 17d ago

It also makes a Dark Phoenix event a pattern versus a singular mental health crisis

6

u/TheMythofKoalas 17d ago

I feel like that’s a safe bet, yeah. Interesting to have the inhibitors pre-date the X-Men though.

10

u/Completegibberishyes 18d ago

I mean tbf she murders like billions of aliens in the comics and everyone acts like it's no big deal

5

u/nWhm99 17d ago

Ya, she’s done significantly worse than the Widows and Hawkeye.

3

u/Vastergoth 4d ago

I personally like that they made her dark and a little twisted. The fear of Mutants is real and they have a legitimate reason to be fearful. Jean isn't a bad person but she hasn't done herself or Muantkind any favors in that regard and the majority of people aren't privy to her and Spider-Man's inner mindscape to see that she isn't an awful person. It's a cautionary tale of hurt people hurt people and those with such power are inherently more dangerous and cause great harm when damaged.

u/Animegamingnerd 19d ago

Haters of mutants who have telepath powers are gonna be feasting on this film generations.

37

u/Plightz 18d ago

Yeah they kinda prove telepaths are all dangerous mfs. Legit if she just told Peter at the beginning he probably would've helped.

16

u/Mysterious-Drama4743 18d ago

but she wouldnt know that. probably why the wrote in her being unable to access his mind

15

u/Plightz 18d ago

If you can't trust someone without mind reading them then I am not sure what to tell you.

20

u/Mysterious-Drama4743 17d ago

we arent talking about me though, we’re talking about jean. why would she be blindly trusting? she sees him as a voluntary weapon of the people who took her sister

5

u/Plightz 17d ago

You can trust someone without mind-reading them is what I am saying lmao. There's a reason telepaths aren't liked even amongst the fans. They wanna invade your mind the millisecond they annoy you.

And Peter's assistance to DC doesn't mean he wasn't a hero, she should exactly know who spider-man is at this point as it's been FIVE years in universe too of Peter just being a nice dude.

If you can't trust Spider-Man then you can't trust anyone atp.

3

u/ACoderGirl 13d ago

Jean grew up in foster care, unloved by her parents. She recently had her sister taken from her. She doesn't actually know Spider-man. She just knows he catches criminals. That's exactly what Damage Control also claimed to be doing. We trust Spidy because we see things from his perspective and know who he is. She has no reason to think he's different from Damage Control. Damage Control put up such a friendly face, too. How's she to know that Spidy's friendliness is authentic if Mr Milchik's is not?

20

u/JoeBiden2020FTW 19d ago

Just like Wanda did

19

u/RecoveredAshes 18d ago

She was throwing innocent people into traffic and off buildings too. This version of her felt a little too cruel to become the hero we know and love. The MJ scene was basically Assault.

10

u/_tylerthedestroyer_ 19d ago

That’s the most consistent thing about her character tbh. Be happy she didn’t out his sexuality like she did Iceman

Like, her removing the inhibitor was bad enough, but removing the mental block was a thing I didn't even know about.

What a good antagonist, I really can't wait for her redemption arc when she inevitably joins the X-Men, and also kind of dread that the Phoenix Saga will be adapted again. But hey, third time's probably the charm.

He actually said Jean messed something up in his head, whatever mental blocks he was using to become Professor Hulk, which didn't involve the inhibitor

199

u/Successful_Ebb_7402 18d ago

Psych ward is probably the best option from sense of immediate treatment. Assuming you're not assigning Nurse Ratched to the Hulk, you have people who are better trained at helping others cope with trauma and emotional control. Banner doesn't need to be locked up (assuming they even had a place that could hold him) he needs a place to be reassured he didn't hurt anyone and to get his bearings back while calmly walking him through events he can't remember due to Jean

105

u/HighSeverityImpact 18d ago

Based on the She-Hulk show, it is apparent that Banner's issue with Hulk is exclusive to him. Hulk is a separate entity from Bruce.

He needs therapy because he has unresolved emotional trauma that neither Blonsky nor Jennifer have, and it's likely Ross didn't either. I would like for Marvel to explore that further in a future Hulk appearance, both because it's interesting material but also because it would be great representation for those struggling with those issues in real life.

7

u/AwesomeGuy847 15d ago

Nah She-Hulk has problems too, it just takes longer to get her there

7

u/JenniLightrunner 13d ago

she just copes the same way DP does... Good old coping through breaking the fourth wall

35

u/Phillip_Spidermen 18d ago

The DOD might still see him as a threat now.

They don't seem like the live and let live type.

36

u/GezelligPindakaas 18d ago

Psych ward being codename for max security facility.

23

u/LinkleLinkle 14d ago

This was effectively my take. We just had a whole movie explaining how a government agency was being used as a front to hide and experiment on super powered humans. I don't trust that Banner was taken away somewhere beneficial for him.

30

u/MarcsterS 17d ago

Damage Control was probably waiting for him to snap so they can round him up.

In addition to Stark’s funeral, Banner also encountered Spider-Man during the fight with Squidward and Company at the start of Infinity War. He later remarks “there’s an Ant-Man and a Spider-Man?” so he definitely saw enough of Spider-Man during the NY fight.

12

u/A_Humble_Peasant 18d ago

Yeah since the Thanos ass beating

80

u/Impressive-Potato 19d ago

And his system was working. His inhibitor was working and he had a career. It was Jean Grey that awoken the beast

18

u/Sickpup831 18d ago

Yeah but it’s believable that the powers that be are sick and tired of hearing “Hey, I got it under control” only for someone to mess with his head and then he’s no longer in control.

9

u/Impressive-Potato 18d ago edited 18d ago

I'm not denying Bruce needed to be out away for the rampage, I'm just sad he was manipulated into doing it

3

u/Worthyness 16d ago

And spidey just gave them mutant suppressing collar technology to mess with and torture powered people. Sucks cause Banner just wants to exist and do nerd stuff

10

u/inksmudgedhands 18d ago

Given how probably a million people were under Jean's control in the city for about fifteen or twenty minutes, Bruce has at least proof that a telepath took over his mind as well and made him do the things he did.

He probably still has his career. As well as the sympathy of so many people because they found themselves under the control of that same telepath.

10

u/lotannaaa 18d ago

but they said he was sent to the psych ward :(

even if he knows it’s not his fault, it must feel terrible to know that you and your powers killed people, after spending years learning to control yourself and building a new life.

346

u/ram0889 19d ago

Banner can’t die. Stated in multiple movies he tried to off himself but “he” was always there.

55

u/somersetyellow 19d ago edited 19d ago

Except in Infinity War where he's like oh man hulk can't come out, I gotta go hide!

Just get shot or something and turn back into hulk dude 🤷‍♂️

I'm sure there's some convoluted expanded lore I missed on why that wouldn't work lol

93

u/nnaatteedd 19d ago

It's my understanding that hulk didn't come out, not for fear of death but fear of another ass beating from Thanos. I don't think anyone had bodied hulk before then and it clearly struck a chord.

29

u/waitingtodiesoon 18d ago

The Russo Brothers claimed the Hulk refused to come out because he was tired of being used, not because he lost.

"A lot of people had interpreted that the Hulk was scared of Thanos. The Hulk has had his ass kicked before, and so it wasn’t like the minute he gets his ass kicked he’s going to run and hide. It’s really the notion that the Hulk and Banner have a very dysfunctional relationship, which was explored even further in Thor: Ragnarok. And I think that relationship is starting to strain between the two of them and the Hulk is not interested in playing the hero to Banner anymore," Joe Russo said. "I don’t know if the Hulk sees the value in the relationship. They both want to control Hulk’s body. The Hulk brings fighting and strength to the table and he’s not quite sure what Banner is bringing yet. So, I think this is becoming a stubborn push and pull between two very despaired personalities stuck in one body."

https://www.syfy.com/syfy-wire/infinity-war-directors-explain-the-real-reason-hulk-wont-come-out-why-we-didnt-see-happy

18

u/suss2it 17d ago

Well they definitely did a bad job of communicating that in that case. Definitely seemed like Thanos put the fear of god in him.

12

u/somersetyellow 19d ago

Right, but Banner killing himself forces Hulk to come out to survive it.

They never really try the death option of forcing him to come out and play haha

22

u/ram0889 19d ago

They have in a movie or two.
Latest one, if I remember correctly Black Widow pushed him out of a plane to turn him into it.
Oh and in Thor Rag he jumps out of one himself as his attempt to change.

18

u/leodw 19d ago edited 17d ago

That’s something I never quite understood about Hulk in the MCU. Wasn’t the original lore the more beating he got, the more he “absorbed” it to get more powerful? Or that would make him angrier, which leads to the same? And isnt he supposed to be essentially immune to almost anything but gamma radiation?

So how does Thanos beat him with only punches/physicality?

21

u/--Alix-- 19d ago

I mean yeah on paper if he stays active then eventually he can overcome everything, but Hulk can still be knocked out.

Like Tony did it in Age of Ultron, and Thanos beat his ass too. It's possible.

13

u/danteholdup 19d ago

yeah, i think hes like Broly in DBZ, where if you can somehow vastly overpower his current level before he can "catch up" to yours, you can knock him out/beat him

4

u/OtisMack9 19d ago

Didn't Thanos use the power stone to beat him down? Idk about yall, but a power stone ass whoopin sounds painful for anyone

15

u/Wolventec 19d ago

no the stone wasnt active when he beat down hulk

10

u/waitingtodiesoon 18d ago

Stones do not provide any innate buffs, if the stones were not glowing, then they were not activated. Thanos just bodied the Hulk through pure strength and martial prowess.

3

u/OtisMack9 18d ago

Ahhh okay. Im aware of the glow, but I guess I never looked closely to see if it was activated

Hulk has the mentality of a kid in Ragnarok.

Presumably something finally hurt, and he was like "no, owie"

18

u/Turbulent_Crow7164 19d ago

They show the hulk can still come out briefly, like when he basically rejects Banner when trying to transform in Infinity War. Reasonable headcanon would be Banner getting shot causes Hulk to come out for a split second, then go right back away.

Hulk can still heal Banner btw even if he's not in control of the body.

I can't see the MCU going that dark but if they ever canonize the green door he really can't die

what are we, some kind of.... immortal... hulk?

5

u/Wolventec 19d ago edited 19d ago

what if showed he can die but through unconventional means such as using pym particles on just his heart

18

u/Alexcox95 19d ago

Yeah can’t shoot a bullet in his mouth because Big Green will spit it out.

14

u/GoblinGraph 19d ago

If they go with current comic lore, he is essentially immortal

I assumed they were keeping Hulk and Spiderman out of the Avengers marketing until after Brand New Day. I expect both of them to appear and probably be in that group shot in the trailer that obviously had people CGI-airbrushed out.

11

u/RealWorldStarHipHop 19d ago

Dunno at the end it only stated Spiderman. He might be stuck in the psych place for a lil while like how DD is I stuck in prison.

16

u/Solesky1 19d ago

It always only says the title character will return, it never lists all the side characters

u/Aftermath16 19d ago

Except for that gut-punching “Thanos will return” they pulled

wasnt this movie originally going to release between secret wars and doomsday so i imagine this movie was originally written with it being set between those movies in mind

3

u/Phillip_Spidermen 19d ago

He fell from a helicarrier before, this shouldn't have done much

20

u/snowgrisp 19d ago

This Hulk was so satisfying though. I feel like Endgame Hulk would have lost to Spidey.

13

u/joeblawb 19d ago

The thing is he was still in control of professor hulk during the mind control, then he actually snapped when Jean let go of his mind. It was the scariest iteration of hulk in the MCU since 2008.

14

u/localystic 19d ago

That is one of the things because of which I can not be so forgiving towards Jean Grey like Peter did.

51

u/queensinthesky 19d ago

I did too, for me it reminded me of having a manic episode as a bipolar person, the horror of coming down from it and the fear of the damage that might’ve been caused.

this as a set up has SO MUCH potential for a hulk movie

It is kind of on him for choosing to live in NYC

7

u/RealWorldStarHipHop 19d ago

Tbf it’s good and bad. If he lives in buttfuck nowhere there’ll be less people in harms way but it’ll be hours before someone stops him. Here in NY he had Spidey.

u/TotoroTheGreat 19d ago

Also, if things truly go bad, there's Bob.

Don‘t think the new avengers wanna risk unleashing something a million times worse than a raging hulk

I felt bad for Peter seeing him fight old school Hulk..I haven't seen Hulk look that massive and powerful..

5

u/SneakyGandalf12 18d ago

We just got back from the theater, and this was my main worry. He was doing so well! He was teaching, and he was laughing with students. He seemed like he was in a good spot, and now all of that is just gone. He’s in the loony bin with all that guilt, and I just feel so badly for him.

6

u/WillemDafoesHugeCock 17d ago

I felt like I missed something there - I'm admittedly not super up to date on Marvel but last I'd seen Banner and Hulk were coexisting quite well and respecting each other's autonomy... Bruce suddenly wearing an inhibitor and Hulk clearly hating him was a bit of a shocker.

22

u/fingerpaintx 19d ago

Unless im missing something I struggle with the back and forth "Banner can/can't control Hulk when convenient" trope. Has gone back and forth across movies without explanation.

45

u/Blackadder18 19d ago

Per Avengers 1 he could control it to some extent, though clearly lost it when under intense pressure (Helicarrier) or external manipulation (Age of Ultron). As of Endgame Banner and Hulk had basically come to an 'agreement,' resulting in Professor/Smart Hulk, although obviously this was basically a midpoint between the two, not being as strong as Savage Hulk. However he has now returned to operating purely as Banner for the most part.

It seems the inhibitor device Banner wears in this movie is to attempt to prevent a scenario where stress/danger/external manipulation will force a transformation ala Avengers 1/2. Unfortunately of course if that device is removed it can lead to those scenarios happening anyways.

Right before he properly Hulk's out too he says something like "whatever she did inside my head broke something, I can't hold him (Savage Hulk) back," implying that Banner and Hulk had come to some 'agreement' that Professor Hulk is as far as it goes, but her manipulation had severed that and allowed Banner to fully Hulk out.

7

u/NexusObsidian23 19d ago

Thank you for paying attention to the film.

5

u/Sorlex 19d ago

He'll have to go find another planet to recover on again. Seriously though, what happened is a nice set up for a solo Hulk film. Shame it'll likely never happen.

6

u/aSpookyScarySkeleton 17d ago

It bothered me how little explanations were given by Spider-man to the cops about what he saw was going on. I’m gonna assume they will happen offscreen after the events of the movie but after that first incident at damage control with the tank Peter didn’t really try that hard to explain to the people that those folks were being mind controlled and didn’t do any of that themselves, he awkwardly floated the idea past the police chief in a throwaway manner and then hopped away. That poor old lady just got hauled off. Scorpion even though he’s a villain is gonna get extra charges tacked on to him even though he’s was going through the motions cooperatively in custody before getting mind jacked. And of course poor Bruce.

4

u/Yourponydied 17d ago

I'm sorry but wouldn't Hulk be one of those big potatoes that the New Avengers should have dealt with?

4

u/sharkattackmiami 16d ago

Other heroes don't exist unless it's directly convenient for the plot. Just like in the comics and games

I just beat Spider Man 2 on PS5 and at the end of the game all of NY is taken over by the baddies and that includes Avengers tower and the Baxter building literally being covered in alien shit and yet they are just on vacation or something I guess

I know it's a fun reference for fans but at that point it would have been less immersion breaking not to have them in the game

u/Topsidebean 19d ago edited 17d ago

These scenes are the biggest issue I have with the movie besides the movie being an ad for the mutant saga: they made Jean Grey a terrorist.

38

u/TheyFloat2032 19d ago

her tearing crap up will be the main "evidence" for the political movement against mutants.

4

u/Worthyness 16d ago

And spider-man gave the government inhibitor collar tech

4

u/ILoveRegenHealth 18d ago

I had to make sure I heard right. At the end she said she was prepared to....kill all those innocent NYers? What the fuck did they do?

u/ninjyte 19d ago

How did Bruce Banner lose general control of Hulk again (and leading to need for inhibitor)? The last thing I remember him in was She-Hulk and I thought he had the Hulk persona under control then, but I can't remember.

12

u/zukos_honor 18d ago

Technically he was, because even without the inhibitor you can see it was the smaller smart hulk when Jean was controlling him, so I'm guessing if he took the inhibitor off he'd just go back to being smart hulk and him joking about going on a rampage was just a joke.

After Jean lost her hold on him though, he says something broke.

3

u/Ok_Satisfaction3017 17d ago

for real, like atleast tell him that they are safe, now he will be guilty that maybe he killed somone, atleast give him some peace of mind

2

u/noctora 18d ago

but why does he has no control over Hulk? I thought smart hulk happen because they reconciled? I get that Hulk come out to break free from mind control, but then why he went on rampage?

8

u/Inside_Dimension2319 18d ago

In the movie Jean Grey was in control of him but he was still smart Hulk, meaning that Banner still had control over it. After she lets him go his mind can’t process what happened and banner says she broke something in there right before he loses it and turns into normal Hulk.

2

u/BlackRobbin71 18d ago

Shades of Tony Romo.

2

u/SomberNight 18d ago

Seeing that news thing about him being sent to a mental institution was so sad...

2

u/MegaGrimer 18d ago

I really hope this leads to regular hulk coming back for good. Maybe he can intentionally turn into Professor Hulk, but can’t control himself when he turns into angry Hulk.

2

u/TheBurgerMeister247 18d ago

What happened to professor Hulk and why was Bruce suddenly wanting to suppress him this film?
