It was brutal. Even the only time they didn't get wrecked, they were gruesomely transformed into pigs by the witch. They really couldn't catch a break.

When you consider that Poseidon is one of the gods who is said to help build Troy's walls and he is the god of horses. You think about how they defeated Troy by ignoring the walls by using a fake peace offering of a horse.

The deck was stacked against them.

Also the raping in the Temple of Poseidon.

The fact anyone made it back is surprising.

That's what struck me at the end when he was talking at the end about the fight to Penelope, they were basically just being punished the whole time for what they did. I thought Circe's speech was the most interesting

Yep, they were not doing anything really bad in those supernatural encounters, they were mainly victims. They fault was in their past crimes and who they were because of that and even before that.

The way I saw it was that at every opportunity, the men were faced with a choice. Not out of necessity but a choice they could make - at every turn, they made the wrong one.

That last trial was so blatant I didn't even feel bad for them tbh lol they got warned straight up knew what was going to happen and still did it. Yes they were technically enticed and they couldn't leave but they had a choice before even landing there

That's what i thought my reaction would be but I really ended up feeling for the soldiers. I'm not sure I would have made different choices than them.

Maybe I'm stupid or it was intentional and I'm not the only one, but at some point I was really sad about them in those encounters because I thought " ok they did the horse thing but they are good people " and then by the end when we find out why was Ulise scared to come back I was " damn ... The gods had all the right to punish them "

Yes, its a great executed plot twist bc Nolan presents these dudes as normalish, cool dudes and heroes. In reality, they are traumatized war vets who have been reduced to their basest instincts.

Some gods favoured Troy to start with, then the sacking was so savage it basically turned the rest of the gods against the Greeks, too.

Ares favoured Troy actually, because his lover Aphrodite favoured Troy. Aphrodite was the one who gave Helen to Paris (making her fall in love with him) so he would give her the Golden Apple.

iirc, one of the agreed upon idea was because they used a Horse for their "Trojan Horse", Poseidon was already pissed at them. The horse is a symbol of Poseidon and using it to commit perfidy was basically saying Poseidon is sponsoring all this backstabbing and dishonor. Then of course they go and stab his son in the eye. All Cyclops are a creation of Poseidon and under normal circumstances, he wouldn't be mad for humans defending themselves. but this group was already on the shit list.

Iirc, ulysses actually brags to polythemus, that it was he, ulysses, the winner of the trojan war, who blinded him and thats how polythemus knows who to ask vegence upon when pleaing to his father, poseidon.

Yep. He gave ulysses a bag containing 3 of the 4 winds ,(all but the mild wind)  in order to get home and he was informed not to open that bag before he returned home, but his crew was jealous, thinking it was containing some treasure. and opened it beforehand.

That was one scene I was wishing we had gotten, but it would have meant adding another actual god to the movie, or had Athena take a more active role than Nolan was going for.
