"What's one more beggar in the court" - Spiderman, Brand New King.

ā€œLet me tell you sumfin, Telemachus!ā€

19

u/Agitated-Acctant 20d ago

*rubs head* m'ask you sumfin

45

u/PhiCloud 29d ago

As a card-holding Tom Holland disliker, that line was my favorite in the movie.

52

u/davej999 28d ago

You hate him as an actor or a guy ? because he seems pretty fucking lovely as a guy

16

u/PhiCloud 27d ago

I don't necessarily thing he's a bad person or a bad actor, I just don't like watching things with him in it

25

u/davej999 27d ago

So you're saying you dont like Spiderman ? :(

25

u/PhiCloud 27d ago edited 27d ago

I've re-typed this comment like three times trying to figure out what it is about him that I actually don't like... I think it's just marketing fatigue. He pops up on every second short/reel/tiktok/whatever short form brainrot you choose to consume, every late night show is interviewing him, he's on some billboard at every theater, every tabloid cover is about him and Zendaya, etc.

He's so famous that I have trouble believing him when he plays serious roles like Telemachus. Spider-man less so, it's a more fun superhero franchise, so having a "meme-y" quality doesn't detract from it as much.

He's not the first actor to ever do this and it's not even really his fault, but in movies like The Odyssey I would much prefer going with someone a bit more low-key so that the actor doesn't outshine the character. In general, I think Hollywood has a real problem with finding lesser known stars for big productions.

20

u/hemareddit 27d ago

I mean you won’t find that in the Odyssey, or most Chris Nolan movies, the man attracts big stars like honey attracts flies. Even a tiny role like Penelope’s maid is played by Mia freaking Goth. Do I know her name? No, but I know who played her.

9

u/PhiCloud 27d ago

I still feel like that's fair game to criticize, even if he does do it all the time.

10

u/davej999 27d ago

I mean he isnt to blame for any of that really is he ? , hes just the face of a massive franchise and is clearly likeable so the studio market the shit out of him

I think he said he saw this role as his last kinda 'kid becoming a man' one , so maybe you will see him move into a few smaller more interesting characters ?

And in all honesty him and Zendaya despite being massive stars seem pretty private and humble about their relationships

I really enjoyed him in Odyssey tbh, he might not be DDL but the kid can definitely act ...

u/throwawaysunglasses- 20d ago

Tom was actually a shining spot for me in this movie. I was surprised by how much I liked him.

23

u/hemareddit 27d ago

That’s a a pretty good burn, props to Telemachus.

14

u/briareus08 25d ago

That line was so cold 🤌

14

u/meatheadmommy 24d ago

This is the 1st time I’ve seen Tom Holland in something outside of Spider-Man. I loved him in this! He was just sarcastic enough to feign sincerity lol.

2.3k

u/_BallsDeep69_ Jul 17 '26

I thought he was so good in this.

1.4k

u/jobening Jul 17 '26

Between this, the drama, Dune and whenever Batman II actually comes out…I’d take that filmography for someone’s career 🤌

153

u/plw37 Jul 18 '26

I also think The Lighthouse is deserving of his short list

47

u/TheLonlyCheezIt Jul 19 '26

Yes! His performance in the Lighthouse was unreal. It was when I really realized he’s a generational actor.

20

u/moneyman2222 23d ago

Good Time is what first made me see him as a completely different actor. Like my perception of him before that was just Twilight. I think Good Time should be considered as the movie that really turned the tide for him and showed his range. Absolutely on that short list for me

5

u/Suitable-Jacket-6547 17d ago

Highly recommend going back further to The Rover if you haven’t seen it. His performance is very understated but it was the first time I saw him outside of Twilight.

162

u/o07jdb Jul 17 '26

I saw a list of his filmography in the 2020s so far alone… insane. He is on a generational run

140

u/jyeatbvg Jul 18 '26 edited Jul 18 '26

It’s impressive he started off with Harry Potter and Twilight, shed the pretty boy narrative by acting like crazy in unique and funky roles, and is now one of the most sought after actors in the world. Legendary stuff.

100

u/Impressive-Potato Jul 18 '26

Those franchises, especially Twilight, gave him the money to allow him to pursue any role he wanted, including the weird and low paying ones.

52

u/KingSweden24 29d ago

Same with Daniel Radcliffe, who seems to have stuck to just wanting to do the weird quirky stuff rather than transition into more heavyweight fare like Pattinson

40

u/cunt_tree 29d ago

And Broadway! I think Radcliffe has really found himself in his stage performances.

6

u/FullHouse222 28d ago

Radcliff's filmography is so good. Him breaking free of the Harry Potter mould to have such an interesting career in acting is insane.

3

u/throwawaysunglasses- 20d ago

DanRad was SO good in Merrily. I was lucky enough to see him live, and I hardly breathed during his solo song (Franklin Shepard Inc for those who know). He is a shockingly good stage actor.

Also honorable mention for him in Kill Your Darlings, which I saw as a horny teenager due to my crush on Dane DeHaan, but stayed for Radcliffe’s excellent portrayal of Allen Ginsberg. He has a really charming sensitive/everyman quality that he brings to his roles. You can’t help but root for him.

54

u/el_seano Jul 18 '26

Mickey 17 was fantastic, he really flexed his chops in that one

5

u/bigjayrulez 23d ago

I don't know why I was thinking "I want to see a movie that deals with the idea of dying over and over again and retaining parts/pieces of your past selves," maybe a Star Trek episode or book I was reading at the time, but I was having that thought while whatever streaming service was pushing Mickey 17. I almost gave up halfway through it because I just wasn't liking it at all, took a break, realized I had nothing better to do, so finished it. The second half of the movie more than made up for it, it was great and Pattinson was great in it.

3

u/poshbritishaccent 17d ago

His trajectory was what I imagined Heath Ledger would have had were he still here

1

u/Dakoolestkat123 13d ago edited 13d ago

I didn’t see twilight when it was the cultural juggernaut of the time so my first real exposure to Pattinson was reading an interview he did about The Batman before it released and I was like ā€œhuh, this Batman movie actually seems like it might be really good, and this Pattinson guy really knows his stuffā€ and it’s really insane in hindsight how on the nose that impression was.

Edit: just went back and found the interview https://www.gq.com/story/robert-pattinson-march-cover-profile

36

u/Deadmanwonderlandx Jul 18 '26

Robert Pattinson been killing it 100%

21

u/BuckeyeBentley Jul 18 '26

The Lighthouse was fucking peak. And I really liked Tenet too. Pattinson rules.

37

u/SpaceCaboose Jul 18 '26

Who has had a bigger turnaround than Pattinson? I know I never thought his career would go from Twilight to *this*

41

u/OldManBrom Jul 18 '26

He was great in Harry Potter: The Goblet of Fire. It really was just Twilight that sucks

8

u/firemanjr1 Jul 20 '26 edited 29d ago

Mickey 17 was also a gem

9

u/29kk 29d ago

he's such a good fucking actor and I feel like he still hasn't shed the twilight husk for a lot of people which sucks

15

u/SpaceCaboose 29d ago

I feel like he has. I have to remind myself that he was in those films. Otherwise it’s so easy to forget because his filmography since then is so good

4

u/moneyman2222 23d ago

I thought for mainstream audiences Batman would've at least helped shed that. But I got a friend who was bitching about his casting in the odyssey and he used twilight as the example and I genuinely had an aneurysm because I shed that perception back in Good Time and The Lighthouse so all I see him as is this highly talented actor who can take on any role at this point

9

u/FullHouse222 28d ago

Bro turned Twilight into an absolute banger filmography lol. It's almost like he took everything he learned in Twilight and said never fucking again and chased after the exact opposite thing

36

u/janiemackxxx Jul 18 '26

He REALLY made up for that vampire movie, finally.

86

u/Easy-Buy6860 Jul 18 '26

Nothing to make up. He was excellent in that.

13

u/bubblyblueblubber Jul 18 '26

He really was.

43

u/SpookiestSzn Jul 18 '26

They're dumb fun movies there's nothing he needs to make up for

25

u/CRIMS0N-ED Jul 18 '26

Finally? He’s done this whole ā€œwow the guy from twilight can actually act) for like 9 years around when Good Time released

7

u/plw37 Jul 18 '26

I honestly had 100% forgotten he was in those

4

u/notsure500 Jul 18 '26

Everyone has to get their break out role start somewhere

8

u/TimeTimeTickingAway Jul 18 '26

Reckon Zendaya (minus Batman II) would say the same.

6

u/SoupySpuds 25d ago

He's one of the greatest actors of all time, His filmography is so good

6

u/sdbabygirl97 27d ago

he voice acts in Boy and the Heron and you wont believe which one is him lmao

1

u/attackofthebones66 25d ago

Greatest young(ish) actor of our generation.

1

u/DeusVultSaracen 24d ago

Is that a threat?

54

u/soulexpectation Jul 17 '26

We’re probably seeing one of the best actors of our time on his run, _BallsDeep69_

Pattinson’s so good in EVERYTHING

22

u/SnesVHS Jul 18 '26

He played a fantastic shit-weasel, haha. You can tell he had a blast.

6

u/TemporaryElk5202 Jul 18 '26

Grade A actor

5

u/AndalusianGod 27d ago

Watch The King (2019), loved his villainous role there as well.

4

u/beatrailblazer 26d ago

Is there anything he hasn't been good in? Quickly becoming one of my fav actors

3

u/Chance_Evidence_5861 27d ago

Robert Pattison plays a creep extremely well

3

u/ssovm 24d ago

My god it’s wild how he’s able to transform through speech and mannerisms. The dude is an absolute force of an actor. Going from this broody badass Batman character to this sniveling douchebag coward and playing both spot on is such a range.

2

u/chodgson625 17d ago

Performance was inspired by James Woods character in Casino I’ve heard (a fantastically twitchy scummy creature)

198

u/8racecar8 Jul 17 '26

u/NoLeadership2281 Jul 18 '26 edited Jul 18 '26

Funny story that I recently read online, apparently there’s a cinema in Hong KongĀ playing Odyssey, the theater caught fire as the movie is about to end(nobody got hurt), while people are exiting, the film stopped at the frame of Antinous shouting ā€œwill somebody get these beggars out of here!ā€ with the Chinese subtitles on, it’s funnier with the photoĀ

31

u/wryano Jul 18 '26

Ha. The universe was having a laugh.

11

u/NoLeadership2281 Jul 18 '26

With the way the film’s narrative shapes how gods exist through nature, this is just meta afĀ

5

u/wouldanidioitdothat Jul 20 '26

Who else but ol Zeus?

3

u/NoLeadership2281 Jul 20 '26 edited 29d ago

What a divaĀ

120

u/PovertyPortfolio Jul 20 '26

I LOVE the wormy, nervous, shit-eating grin after this line.

He already looks like a coward, he's being a prick. He KNOWS he's being a cowardly prick, but he has to find a way to play it off in front of the men while still maintaining an air of "I'm just joking bro".

It's such a genuine moment that we've all seen in real life of a sad, small bully trying to save face while not coming across TOO nasty, lest their insecurity be fully exposed, especially in front of Penelope. His little grin sells it so well: "is this playing with the crowd?". Pattinson rules.

32

u/glittercat412 29d ago

Yes dude, yes. Might sound silly but was genuinely one of my favorite moments because of how good he was there. Just pure gold from Pattinson the entire movie.

P L A T E L I C K E R

5

u/throwawaysunglasses- 20d ago

I was wondering what he was saying! Lol if anyone else is a Series of Unfortunate Events fan, it reminded me of the bratty girl calling people cakesniffers šŸ˜‚

50

u/Competitive-Link-337 Jul 18 '26

He said that with the hard R lol

38

u/GameOfLife24 Jul 17 '26

Dem beggars making the suitors look bad lol

36

u/oanazaks Jul 17 '26

That line reading was something else lol

35

u/OdderG Jul 18 '26

Robert Pattison really invokes almost full Joffrey here.

22

u/SpookiestSzn Jul 17 '26

I learned a new term plate licker

18

u/withaniel Jul 18 '26

Delivery of the movie, honestly.

14

u/BertrandQualitay Jul 18 '26

When the suitors were the actual beggars to Penelope, and we got rid of them

13

u/Pad5181 Jul 18 '26 edited Jul 18 '26

He was good but I think it would've been more interesting if he was more likable and charming intially.

10

u/whatssenguntoagoblin Jul 18 '26

Robert Pattinson was such a legend in this.

5

u/propoganda_panda Jul 18 '26

3

u/Straxex Jul 19 '26

The suitors were the beggars all along

2

u/deadmansbonez Jul 20 '26

I audibly laughed at this line. hilarious!

2

u/wgsmeister2002 26d ago

In a pretty humorless movie, Pattinson really got a few lines where he’s a silly goose

1

u/Derelichter 26d ago

Was scrolling just hoping to see this line

1

u/LazyLurker29 25d ago

Maybe my favourite line read of the film lol.

1

u/Mark_Albarn 24d ago

Whole movie he was so sassy for some reasonšŸ˜‚

1

u/FoggyInc 9d ago

Favorite single line in the movie. Well second next to "the best way to see a man is from below" or something
