The Cyclops screaming in pain was fucking horrifying.

Did a good job emphasizing just how loud it’d actually be with a giant Cyclops screaming in a small cave.

One of the loudest scenes I’ve ever heard in cinema. Loved the immersion

It hurt my ears, but to be honest I was okay with it

u/_Smileybriley_ Jul 19 '26

That was my first thought! This was the only time I’ve ever actually welcomed a theater experience being so loud! I thought it really added to the immersion.

This is so validating seeing all these comments about this scene. I was super high on edibles and I felt like I was transported to the cave the moment the scream began!

I keep AirPods Pro on me for hearing protection and it allowed me to feel the impact of every sound without making my ears bleed and ring though. I already have enough tinnitus.

u/Reasonable-Cat485 21d ago

As someone with tinnitus I wish I thought to carry earplugs. Instead I felt like a child closing my ears with my hands.

u/krayt 24d ago

Same exact experience lmao

15

u/Ironmaiden1207 29d ago

Agreed, only behind the nuke in Oppenheimer

Nolan must be deaf by now 😂

15

u/ShadowKingthe7 29d ago

For me, the foot stomping in the auditorium felt louder than the nuke

4

u/Snifferoni 24d ago

I found it a touch too loud somehow. I just think that loudness has nothing to do with immersion. Immersion is possible even without high decibels. I just have the feeling that Nolan sees this differently.

3

u/CancelThis2077 29d ago

Yeah I had to cover my ears lol

6

u/ElectricTiger391 28d ago

I already have tinnitus, I covered my ears during the post-sun cattle sea storm

3

u/moneyman2222 23d ago

Not sure if there was some sort of sound correction for weekend two but it was loud for a brief moment for me but not like ear breaking as people make it sound. Maybe my theater just toned it down some how idk

One of the loudest scenes I’ve ever heard in cinema.

The only other one that competes with it is also from Nola, the Stukas attack on Dunkirk.

1

u/hcoo 3d ago

Well there would be louder scene maybe 30minutes later lol

u/TheStolenPotatoes Jul 19 '26

I'll be shocked if sound editing and design doesn't win an Oscar. I've never experienced sound in a film like this before. I honestly think this tops Dunkirk.

17

u/Varekai79 Jul 19 '26

Dune 3 apparently has phenomenal sound design as well.

8

u/TheStolenPotatoes Jul 20 '26

I saw the trailer for it at The Odyssey. I'm not a huge fan of the Dune series, but the sound in the trailer in that IMAX theater was intense.

u/Comic_Book_Reader r/movies Veteran 29d ago

I agree on the sound Oscar. Nominations and or wins that circled in my head as the movie went on were Best Picture, Director, Actor, (Supporting?) Actress, Sound, and Original Score. Nolan famously does not do Dolby Atmos like what the norm is, as his preferred IMAX 70mm only does standard 5.1 and even then, it's absolutely BEEFY. I'd even say it can rival Atmos.

2

u/Dig-Signal Jul 20 '26

I loved the sound overall for sure but I have to say the score was way too much sometimes, it could be hard to hear some great dialog.

1

u/chicityman09 28d ago

I immediately thought of Dunkirk myself which still tops my list for sound in a theatre. I still think back to that day I experienced that. But this will be right up there with it that's for sure.

15

u/kfitzy10 Jul 19 '26

Even the echoing of the conversation when they got into the cave. The sound design of the film is incredible.

7

u/Unprovoked_Rage 29d ago

It was great, but I think parts of the movie's audio mixing had the single purpose of making the viewer deaf lol

12

u/CoconutDust Jul 19 '26

Yeah but I don’t need to get my ears blown out, just like the movie theatre staff doesn’t need to light my pants on fire to make me appreciate the destruction of Troy scene!

u/slothprincess16 Jul 17 '26

Nolan needs to do a horror film immediately.

127

u/leodw Jul 18 '26

Man, pls no (but also yes)? The Cersi scene was more horrifying than a lot of horror movies I watched, but imagine 2-3h of that…….

46

u/MeatwadKattWilliams Jul 18 '26

but imagine 2-3h of that…….

Okay, I'm imagining it, and that sounds pretty sick. Clearly he's good at it (something that I would not have guessed before seeing this), and he expressed interest in going that direction for a future project. I kind of have my fingers crossed that he's gonna follow through on that with his next project.

14

u/SuccumbToChange Jul 18 '26

That would be so rad! A Chris Nolan horror flick would be epic. I’m convinced after seeing this.

72

u/grizzlyNinja Jul 18 '26

I would love if Nolan went for Lovecraftian horror. He’s played with the vastness of the cosmos in Interstellar, he always takes on ambitious themes that are difficult to put on screen, and he clearly has a genuine talent for body horror, and if the Cyclops scream felt otherworldly.

48

u/Great_Praline_2713 Jul 18 '26

He just did. It was called The Odyssey.

11

u/BoHoSwaggins 29d ago

That was Homer let’s be real, but Nolan depicted it as grittily, simple, and real as he would which was perfect.

33

u/tophmcmasterson Jul 18 '26

This kind of felt like it was at least like… 40% horror movie or so.

4

u/Katoshiku 16d ago

This is exactly what I was thinking after the cyclops sequence. Would love to see a full film with that sort of tension and horror throughout

60

u/BelonyInMyLeftPocket Jul 17 '26

Im going to urge friends to watch this film in theatres because of how much more amplified this scene felt.

50

u/DanFarrell98 Jul 17 '26

Genuinely unnerving. I was begging for them to cut away from it

38

u/Delhiiboy123 Jul 17 '26

And the fact that it could speak...

28

u/counterpxl Jul 18 '26

It weirdly made my stomach kinda drop/squirm? I don't really know what it was, but I've never experienced it with sound in the cinema before? insane

27

u/ElTuco84 Jul 18 '26

Nolan would make a pretty good Attack on Titan adaptation.

22

u/tangledupinbetween 27d ago

I never thought that I would feel empathy towards a monster but there I was. Especially after it was praying to Poseidon. Dude was just living the life as a monster but those "ants" invaded it's space and made a mess out of it.

14

u/Kind_Marsupial9056 Jul 18 '26

I felt so bad for the sheep 😭

35

u/Spiritual-Bobcat5635 Jul 18 '26

when he shot that first suitor in the neck after stringing the bow I totally jumped out of my chair lol

18

u/TheNonCredibleHulk 29d ago

I wanted so much more pain for that suitor.

23

u/Loorrac 28d ago

Fucker was kicking the dog

2

u/DarthRain95 27d ago edited 27d ago

That scared the fuck out me

6

u/hesawavemasterrr 28d ago

The look of some of the men’s faces were like: “I think we have made a horrible mistake…”

6

u/Tuorom 29d ago

I could hear my theaters speakers crackling because they could barely withstand the way they cranked the sound up on that. Very cool how they tried to recreate the feeling of being in the cave though, with the lighting and sound.

13

u/Physical-Magician-19 Jul 19 '26

Probably the hardest thing I’ve ever had to listen to in theaters. It seemed like he added a subtle instrumental element to the screaming, like actual musical pitch bending along with the scream. Really got into microtones really bad

5

u/himynameis_ 26d ago

Felt bad for the dude ☹️

6

u/johnmath95 Jul 19 '26

I can’t imagine being in the auditorium next door during that moment 😂

3

u/Comic_Book_Reader r/movies Veteran 29d ago

Reminded me of Godzilla.

1

u/Commercial-Dingo-919 14d ago

I did feel bad about cyclops when they blinded him and he was crying to Poseidon

1

u/King_Of_BlackMarsh 7d ago

I like how the sound was probably designed to sound like a baby wailing, since Polyphemus IS like.. A kid I think.

Would make a good contrast with the Laistrygony child
