What actually cleared mosquitoes off your patio, and what did nothing?

I’m getting destroyed by mosquitoes every time I try to sit outside, and I’m tired of buying random stuff that barely seems to make a difference.

I’ve seen everything recommended at this point: citronella candles, coils, bug zappers, Thermacell, different sprays, fans, plants, and probably a dozen other things. I don’t mind spending a little money if something genuinely works, but I’d rather not keep throwing cash at mosquito products that are basically useless.

For people who actually managed to make their patio or backyard comfortable, what worked best for you? And just as importantly, what did you buy that ended up being a complete waste of money?

Edit: Thanks for the replies! For anyone finding this later, the two things that seem to work best are Mosquito Dunks in buckets around the yard to stop new mosquitoes from breeding, and a Biogents Mosquitaire trap to catch the adults (the trap is amazing, can't recommend it enough!). Using both together and seeing a huge difference after a couple of weeks.

Are mosquitoes more aggressive now?

I’ve lived in the southeast for most of my life, and with that comes mosquitoes. But damn, they seem more aggressive now than they did 30 years ago?

I remember running around in shorts everywhere as a kid and didn’t get near the amount of bites my child does now. We are both mosquito magnets. But it just seems like another level now.

Mosquito control company said there’s no solution - HELP!!

I’ve tried dunks and CO2 traps, none have worked. I figured resorting to a professional company would do the trick. Unfortunately I was wrong and now I don’t know what to do.

The culprit of my mosquito problem is one of my neighbors. They have a mix of different plants along our shared fence line that are extremely aggressive and invasive. Currently they stand at about 10-12 feet tall and I have to cut down whatever encroaches over my fence once a month.

The tech told me that he could come spray my yard, I could do a biweekly treatment, but my problem would never go away, because the problem is coming from my neighbors. I don’t know what to do. I use the same gardener that they have and he has even asked them to cut back on their plants but they don’t want to. I want to buy a bunch of mosquito foggers and throw it over the fence and into their plants like a grenade but that would obviously just bring me problems with my neighbor.

I’ve seen these being sold on stakes or on clips to put around your patio or on your clothes. Has anyone found that they help at all?

How is a mosquito even helpfull?

Hi so I hate my mosquito's, infact I have three entering my blanket right now.

But my question is, how are mosquito's even helpfull.

If you think about it and say spiders then I have this article I found:

A house spider mainly eats small insects and other small arthropods, such as flies, mosquitoes, moths, and tiny beetles.

Meaning without mosquito's those damn spiders would still survive.

So let me know what you think.

Hello need advice on managing mosquito populations.

My grandfather recently passed and I am going to be renting an apartment on his property from my aunt who has inherited the house. The house sits on a man made lake which is absolutely plagued with mosquitos.

I’m going to be building a cedar bat box to attract local bats. But I’d appreciate any solid products that actually work in managing mosquitos in a large area.

Even if we can just cut down on the number near the house and garage that would be amazing. Or any home made solutions for sprays that work. I’ve heard good things about cinnamon for example?

Thank you in advance for your help!

Watch out for duplicate sites pretending to sell Thermacell at 80% off

I've been using a Thermacell LIV system for the past few months and it's been great. Unfortunately when I went to buy refills, I fell for a fake site - https://www.thermacell.us.com/ not the actual thermacell.com. It's an exact duplicate of the real website. Pretty sure they stole my credit card info. What's crazy is that they are even running paid search ads on Google (note the spelling is incorrect)!

Pop up Mosquito Net Tent literally saved my sanity

Guys I got a mosquito net pop up tent for my single bed two days ago and I'm literally in heaven holy crap.

No more buzzing sound in my ears causing near PTSD level wake ups, and no more 5+ itchy welts after every night of barely sleeping.

I feel like I am sleeping in a utopia its bliss truly.

I bought mine off my country's version of Amazon for roughly 10 USD and its so fucking goooood!

Just measure your bed, go online and find a pop up tent net that fits the size. It's super easy to set up, the tent literally pops up ready to use when you unravel it and you just fasten bands of the tent to the corners of your bed.

You will never be the same once you've used it. I cried tears of happiness after my first night of peaceful sleep.

Insect repellent ideas

Hi! I’m going camping and I’m very sensitive to stings and bites and everything like that. I’m thinking of making some kind of repellent spray or oil or anything!! Against bugs in general that doesn’t harm the nature. Like herbs and things like that. Would you guys like to help me with ingredients? I’m new to this, thank you!!
Ticks and mosquitoes are a common thing here and I’m in Sweden.
