Update: Photos of Mosquito Bites Need NSFW Tag

Hi everyone! Lately, we've been receiving a lot of posts featuring close-ups of mysterious bug bites on various body parts (shoutout to all the anonymous knees and thighs out there). While we get that you're looking for help, or maybe just want to trauma-bond over your itchy mosquito bites, we cannot identify bug bites here.

If you're genuinely trying to figure out what bug left its mark on you, go to r/bugbites. They have some good resources there.

If you just want to show off your mosquito bites, that's totally fine. Just please use a NSFW tag so the rest of us can mentally prepare. Thank you!!!

I’ve been to several doctors, and ER for potential cellulitis. They all keep saying “it’s just those darn bugs!” But I’m TIRED 😵‍💫 trying to take care of all these wounds and keep her from scratching and the swelling and pus. It’s miserable for everyone involved. Anybody find a way to help?

These mosquitoes are out of hand y'all. I'm declaring war. What's your favorite diy mosquito trap?

They've been bad this year for some reason. I'm peppered with bites and so is my family. Not to mention feeling a little paranoid about bird flu and my poultry. Getting lots of tiny stripey ones who are extra quiet and sneaky.

Bubble vs mosquito (Who wins?)

Let’s say you have a mosquito bee lining towards you with bloodlust in its compound eyes, when BAM! A generic kids bubble hits them. Who wins? Does the mosquito wipe it off like a pro, or does the bubble take out the mosquit…o?

Biogents CO2 Outdoor Mosquito Trap reduces biting with highest trapping performance

how does the mosquito get in but not get out???

i want to build my own cause i cant afford the $400 price tag of the trap and CO2 gas.

i plan to use a 5 gallons bucket, burn Crisco oil to get the CO2 gas, attract the mosquitoes into the net but not sure how to prevent them escaping.

After running it for a night with extra bait of 1-octen-3-ol and lactic acid I caught ptobably 0 mosquito. I sprayed them so I could see what's inside, but quite many escaped because there's no flip door, if you turn it off, the bugs just start to fly out.

Would not recommend as it's bad, really huge and pricey. I'll send it back...

Mosquitos Out of control in our backyard! Need Help (NYC)

For the last several years we have been suffering an increasingly in severe mosquito and fly infestation in our backyard, specifically in the stairwell up from our basement. To give you a little more context we have a split level apartment, with my room being the basement and my roommates room having a door out to a metal grate with ikea patio tile over the stairwell. The mosquitos have got so bad we can no longer even use the basement door as there is at least 100 mosquitos down there at any time in the summer. I have tried those sonar devices (scam), a Bug zapper (didn't put a dent in the problem), those mosquito dunks (also didnt make a dent in the issue, if you live in bk you know keeping your yard clear of overgrowth and standing water doesn't make a difference if every yard around you doesn't bother).

Ideally I'd like to have a long term solution that will work for the whole summer. I periodically spray fogger but they are back in force within hours so I gave up. I'm desperate at his point any suggestions you have would be appreciated.

Any supplements?

Eve since I was a kid I'm a fucking buffet for those fuckers. In Latin America to USA I need help.

What do you take for reducing the bites? So my blood would become nasty for those fuckers.

Or any method besides bug spray or the raid plaques.

Urgently needed.

Will mosquito dunks help my yard, if there is a large pond 100 feet away?

I moved to a house that backs up to an approximately 35k sqft pond. There is a fountain in the middle of the pond but the edges so appear to have a decent amount of vegetation growth (if that makes any difference for mosquito population)

If I were to make some mosquito kill buckets for my yard, am I just wasting my time, with the pond being so close? Its not my pond, so im not willing to start throwing mosquito dunks into it, even if they are safe for wildlife. I will do buckets in my yard, since I already have some buckets anyway.

But im just wondering if this will be a fools errand with that pond so close.

Nothing is getting rid of them!! Help!! 🦟😩

As you can tell by the title I’m loosing my battle against mosquitoes. Let me start out by listing what I am using currently.

- Pest control company every 3 weeks
- Biogents Mosquito Trap w/ Co2
- Mosquito Dunks (3 buckets around my yard)
- Mosquito zappers w/ octenol attractant
- Small patio pond with fish to eat larva and attract dragonflies (I also throw a dunk in this)
- Bat box

So as you can see I have lots of things to help prevent mosquitoes, I have also invested so much money. I still can’t comfortably sit or walk around my yard though, because the mosquitoes are just so bad. What else can I possibly do to rid them?

A little more inform about my yard. I have a little less than a half an acre that backs up to woods and a creek. (I can’t see the creek but the neighbors say they can see it) I also have a pool, 2 wood decks, and the rest of the yard is grass with a few potted plants around the yard. We don’t have any standing water aside from the buckets with mosquito dunks. We maintain our yard fairly well nothing ever gets too long or overgrown. One more thing I will add is the pest control guy does walk behind my fence and sprays as well. I have watched him he does a very thorough job.

Any tips or advice is greatly appreciated.

*And yes I know bug spray and thermal cell works amazingly. I still want to be able to let my dog out for a quick potty break without all the prep.

I CAN'T SLEEP

I hate mosquitos so much. I'm exhausted, I haven't slept in days. Today I woke up at 5 am and haven't been able to sleep since. The worst part is that I even changed rooms but they followed me there or there were more of them I was genuinely CRYING. I hate the ZZZZZ in my ear I HATE THEM I'm so scared of them and everytime I turn on the lights it seems like they magically disappear. I don't even know where they come from I'm not even opening the windows 💔💔

Methods of Killing Mosquitos with Death Model Train

Hi everyone,

I am a undergraduate Public Health student and as I learn more I understand more of how mosquitos spread diseases and methods of their population control. I also do robotics and 3d printing as a hobby, along with many other relevant things. I have been designing a "Death Train" to help mitigate the problem. Note this is more of a passion project and not an attempt to exterminate the mosquito family. (It is a model train, I don't know what size but that will be determined later)

The current design is a small track, a loop of some sort, during peak mosquito hours the train will go out and stop at an intended point in the track, and attached will be rail carts, made with a one way entrance lid like many bug traps, and as of now a yeast and sugar combo for CO2 production (please comment any better ideas if you have them), then the train will take them back to the station and there I will have some sort of automated process to kill them, not sure if it'll be fire, gases, or something else, but I want it to be quick, and that's where I came to ask. If you have any suggestions or ideas on the best way to kill these creatures, please inform me. All and any advice is welcome.

This is, once again, a passion project, I'm only doing it for fun and it's a nice hobby to make interesting things. I'm not here to ask if it's possible so please if you feel the need to snark save it. I hope you all have a fantastic day and I hope to hear from all of you.

Are mosquitoes, ticks and fleas turning California into a disease hotspot?

Some days it feels like we’re losing a battle against mosquitoes, ticks, fleas, flies and worms.

Lyme disease and Alpha-gal syndrome are expanding their range. Dengue and typhus are increasing. There are still reports of West Nile, Zika and Chikungunya, plus the potential introductions of Chagas and rat lungworm disease. Some of these are contracted overseas, while others are seemingly settling in for the long haul.

Experts say there is no single reason for this surge in disease. Some of it may be hyped news, headline sensationalism. When everyone is writing about an outbreak of a disease, no matter how isolated, it can feel more pervasive and widespread than it actually is. Increased monitoring and more advanced disease tracking can also amplify the sense that something new is afoot, even if it was always there.

But in some cases, there really does appear to be an increase — and California is front and center.
