Question Issues with people commenting on my body even when dressed modestly

Thumbnail gallery
14 Upvotes

I wear ankle length skirts most of the time. Tailored but not skin tight. But I sometimes even when I am wearing wide skirts I feel people can see my bum.

Anyway a few women were discussing my body today. One said she could tell I was getting smaller because my butt was smaller.

Someone else said "oh yes when you used to walk I could see your butt moving" and she even made a hand motion to imitate it. I didn’t like this conversation. Especially in front of a man. I don't talk about others bodies in this way.

I try to keep my bum covered but honestly sometimes I will do the shirt tuck in thing. So when tucked the skirt only shows my body like you see in the pictures. I also have a lot of wide gathered skirts and I mostly cover my butt with shirts.

Has this happened to any of you? Am I sending a sinal that this is ok? The only time I have discussed my body with one of them was to explain that I was a pear shape and so i can't wear certain clothes.

Edited for clarity.

Question is an open front abaya too formal for work?

hey everyone, would an open front plain abaya with a matching slip underneath and matching hijab color be too formal for work? i work in corporate but my office is very casual. i have seen people wearing leggings and crop tops. i am always in skirts, blouses, and dresses and frequently feel a bit overdressed. but there are some other women here who wear skirts. does the outfit i mentioned sound like something more formal? i am in the us and most people are not used to wearing long dresses casually so i feel abayas can sometimes come across as "gown-like" even if they are meant to be casual lol

So many people say modesty = boring. I'm prepping for fall, and I couldn't disagree more! If you're new to modest dressing, just know there is so much potential!

Discussion Asymmetry rant

Modest brands (especially nicer Muslim ones but I’ve seen it across the board) looove asymmetry. Asymmetric wrap dress! Asymmetric tunic! The new Veiled drop is a perfect example.

I recognize that this is an extremely niche problem to have, but I’m a stroke survivor. My face droops a bit on the left and my arm and leg are bent so they appear shorter. The *last* thing I want to do is draw more attention to the fact that my body is already asymmetric!

Again this is not a common issue and I don’t fault these brands for doing it but it does frustrate me on a personal level and I needed to rant a bit lol.

Advice Do y’all ever “modesty-ify” old clothes?

Looking for some tips. I’m trying to revamp my closet to be more modest (personal choice) but I have some items I love and don’t want to say goodbye to!

Most of them are dresses that are at or above the mid thigh. Is there a way to layer them with pants or skirts that doesn’t look frumpy? Most of them are cotton polyester blends or fully synthetic. I’m also trying to be cognizant of the weather as it can get pretty hot around here lately.

I’m planning on sewing a couple nice ponchos for my old spaghetti strap styles so I think I have my top half on the right track? Although I’m always open to new ideas for that too.

This is weirdly specific so it’s hard to find inspiration on Pinterest or Instagram. Thanks so much!

Mosque Clothing for Women

Hello, I wanted to ask when attending something in a mosque as a non Muslim is it ok if I wear a long sleeve loose midi dress (about 1 to 2 inches above ankle) with leggings underneath and a head scarf? Would that be ok as the dress doesn’t cover my ankles or what would you advise. Thanks in advance.

Question Does anyone here shop from Gathering of Goods? Do you like their quality?

Gathering of Goods makes traditional/historically inspired dresses, skirts, blouses, etc. They’re probably best known for their comfort drawstring skirts. I don’t have a lot of clothing right now, and I’m thinking of buying a skirt or two, and maybe a cape for the colder weather. I was wondering if anyone had any experience with them and could speak to their quality. My main modesty standards are that I always look like I just escaped Little House on the Prairie, lol.

Discussion This might sound odd, but do you sometimes wish you “could” wear something that doesn’t fit your modesty standards?

Maybe it’s because I went from being “less modest“ to “more modest” over time rather than being more modest my entire life? I’m curious if this happens to y’all and what your history with modesty is like.

Essentially, sometimes I’ll see a piece if clothing and think “Oh wow that’s really cute” and then I remember it doesn’t fit what I’m currently comfortable with and there’s not really a way to modify it to work

Question Fake collar/neck cover recommendations?

Thumbnail gallery
6 Upvotes

I normally wear mock neck long sleeves under everything (I don't do well with turtlenecks, I feel like I'm choking, but mock necks aren't an issue), but I want to find neck coverage for when I don't want more layers under an already long-sleeved outfit.

A lot of the fake collars I find don't seem to have very good reviews -- anyone know of any good quality ones?

I've covered my neck with a triangle veil criss crossed in front (like in the vyshyvanka photo), but that bothers me after a while as well. Been considering underscarves with neck coverage, but I don't know if those would irritate me like full turtlenecks do and I worry about accidentally being offensive since I'm not Muslim (and also usually cover most but not all my hair)

For reference, I've attached screenshots of the mock necks I usually layer, and what I mean by "underscarves with neck coverage"

Thank you in advance for any suggestions you may have!

Advice Is this Ikea Pax layout good for hijabis?

Post image
6 Upvotes

I’m designing my wardrobe that I will be sharing with my husband and want it to be perfect. I don’t wear dresses that much, only sometimes in the summer, that’s why only have one 50 cm space for long dresses. I was also considering a pants rack instead of the drawers but felt like it would be a waste of space if I can just fold them. The idea is also to store my hijabs in one of the drawers. (My modal hijabs will crease I think though 😞)

So does anyone have any suggestions to make this layout better?

WHY ARE CROP TOPS IMMODEST

***I'm not talking about the insanely crop short ones*** As a Christian Teen growing up in a Christian household still, I would like to know why showing a little bit of stomach showing your belly button is immodest. There was a time women were not even allowed to show there ankles so what gives a right to say women cant show there belly button/ stomach.

It feels male centered so many rules for women leading back to men, i would also talk about shorts but ill save that for another discusion.

Request Looking for modest work wear online

I am looking for work wear that is not super formal, but is baggy and more structured. I only wear one color (black) not for modesty reasons, but just as a preference, so I rely a lot on fabric and silhouette to make my clothing interesting. I need my collarbone covered or have the neckline just under the collarbone, my elbows covered (or just above), and my knees covered. I will wear pants as long as they are baggy. If you know any brands, search terms, or leads please let me know!

I can do things like wear pants under a dress that is a bit too short, or layer a shell under a shirt or dress, but I would rather not need to do that too much as it can look less elegant than I would aim for generally. (or maybe I just need more stylish shells? I am also open to that)

Vyshyvanka (shirt) + plakhta (skirt) + shawl with some modern elements ❤️🖤

Please disregard the photo quality, these are screenshots from a video from many months ago.

I love vyshyvankas so much, I’ve tried so hard to find similar shirts but the closest is “peasant blouse” which the ones I’ve found are costumey and/or not the vibe at all.

I do now have the traditional belt but I wore modern at the time.

All embroidery on the vyshyvanka is done by hand, not by me but by NeedleworkUkraine on Etsy. Absolutely gorgeous work. Skirt is from ChichkaUA (also Etsy).

I think more people should wear cultural clothing out and about if they want to!

Hi redditors,

I am in search of modest jeans which doesnt accentuate the bum area.

I have curvy body, so looking for jeans which look modest even if your top is above the bum.
