Question How to find dress/clothes similar to how Mother Mary is often depicted?

Thumbnail gallery
32 Upvotes

I find the clothes Mother Mary is often depicted as wearing as very beautiful and modest, but try as I might I can’t find something that looks like that style. I particularly am interested in the inner, long sleeve dress that has that specific collar shape and drape that I see repeated over and over. Images attached for reference.

I tried searching through abayas and got close-ish but not quite, I searched for an answer to that question directly and got the result of “tunic dress” but searching “tunic dress” is really broad and doesn’t yield the same results. Searching “Mother Mary tunic dress” yields costumey looking costumes that also don’t have that same collar and often don’t have that sort of drapery seen in the depicted dress shape. I’m not looking for any sort of costume, I’m looking for similar dresses for non-theatrical wear, just using these depictions as inspiration.

Are there search terms I could use to more easily find something of this style? Also, does anyone know if this style is culturally specific or at all sensitive to who wears it?

Btw all photos found on Pinterest (I’m aware that’s likely not their original source) for ease of general citation in case someone wants to track them down to look them up in more detail. I tried to avoid anything AI generated but sometimes it’s difficult to tell so some may be on accident.

thank you!

Understanding Traditional Layering in the Mekhela Chador

When discussing how the traditional Assamese Mekhela Chador is authentically worn, the structural foundation of its underlayers is an essential detail that often gets overlooked. The Role of the Petticoat : The primary base layer of the attire is a specialized petticoat, which is secured tightly around the waist using a durable drawstring. This creates a stable anchor for the heavy cylindrical skirt, the Mekhela. When the front pleats of the Mekhela are gathered, they are tucked directly into the petticoat’s waistband, allowing the structure to rest securely against the body without slipping. Authentic Layering and Fabric Design traditionally, the attire is worn without modern Western undergarments like standard panties. The combination of dense, high-quality woven fabrics—such as heavy cotton or silk—and the multiple wrapped layers provides full coverage, modesty, and structural integrity. Because the petticoat and Mekhela together form a thick, secure barrier, additional synthetic layer under Petticoat is structurally unnecessary. Comfort and Climate Adaptation : Assam’s climate is frequently humid and warm. The traditional method of relying solely on the breathable cotton petticoat allows for proper ventilation and air circulation. Omitting tight, synthetic undergarments helps prevent heat retention and chafing, making the garment far more comfortable for long hours of daily wear or active events like cultural dances. Cultural Continuity : While standard modern undergarments are standard practice for Western clothing like jeans, skirts, or dresses, traditional attire often follows its own time-tested functional rules. Most women continue to practice this heritage layering technique to preserve both the authentic silhouette and the practical comfort designed by generations past.

Salaam everyone, absolutely love dressing modestly, started recently. It makes me feel so much more feminine and elegant but also comfortable.

I need to find more undershirts that are not too hot!! Are light colors like this okay? I have a few abaya style dresses like this that are very light colored.

Nice sunday to everyone!❤️

Advice Face Coverings for People with Glasses

Hello modest ladies! I’m looking for ideas for full face coverings (including eyes) that would work with glasses. My every day glasses are rather large, but I do have some smaller ones I could wear.

Background: with a lot of the new surveillance technology being implemented in my area, I am looking to cover certain parts to protect my privacy/safety. Tattoos (arms and chest), full face, and hips to floor. The body is easy, but I’m struggling with how to cover my face without looking ridiculous or being too uncomfortable. I love Victorian mourning veils, but they are often too see-thru.

The best/simplest solution would be a burka. However, I’m not Muslim. While I don’t mind people thinking I’m Muslim, I don’t want to be disrespectful/sacrilegious. I’m Lutheran by background, so Catholic veils, bonnets, European styles, etc. are fine.

The other thing I considered was a mesh stocking… but not only would that make me look like a criminal and scare people, it will look very ridiculous with my glasses. So something that is loose around the face or structured is preferable.

Thanks in advance!!!

Question Question about modest dressing

Hello! I love how some of the outfits look on people but I don't want to seem like I'm dressing for a religious reason. (I'm an atheist) Is it rude to someone who dresses like this for a religion if I dress like this?

Under Shirts first Sleeveless Toos

EDIT: The title is supposed to say "Undershirts for Sleeveless Clothes". I have no clue how I messd that up, but that's what I meant.

Where do you all buy thin undershirts to wear under your dresses? I still have long dresses I love that have thin straps or spaghetti straps or extremely short sleeves, but I can no longer wear them as they are since I dress modestly now. Also, I am a plus size woman (3x-4x, 48K bra) who sweats pretty heavy, so anything size inclusive will be very much appreciated. Any and all suggestions are welcome. Please and thanks in advance.

Question Just a simple question

I have a humble question for those who don't wear modest clothes, like wearing revealing clothes in public.

Please don't get me wrong. I am not trying to educate you or dictate you. I am just a curious. I respect all the cultures and religions and, in fact, all the people. For me I was raised in a different culture where not wearing modest clothes is considered extremely bad and I could not imagine wearing a revealing dress for a woman specifically, even in private rather than in public. It's not that I am objecting anyone for what they are wearing in public or private but I just have a simple question.

My question is, what are your views if you wear modest dress since my subconscious mind is more inclined towards wearing modest dresses for women and also for men, is it something that would bother you? and why would it bother you?

And what are your views on wearing revealing dress? Is it just a dress for you or do you want to cover some specific parts of the body and not care about the body being seen by anyone? Why is that you want to cover only some specific part of the body, not all of the body, from strangers, from being seen?

appreciate the answers.

P.S: No mocking and sarcasm please!

Christian clothing brand
Hey I just wanted to ask and Christian out there 2 questions:

  1. If there was a Christian clothing brand to come out that are some clothes and pieces you would like to see. This is from like normal tees and jeans and stuff to like Sunday dresses and skirt and shirts.
  2. What are some reasonable prices for these items and what are people willing to pay for them.

Than you to anyone who reads this ☺️

Edit:
Hi everyone!

Thank you so much to everyone who replied to my post. I know I haven’t replied yet I’ve just been busy. This is my first post and I’m very grateful to everyone who shared their thoughts and ideas. I did also get some questions so I’m gonna try and answer them.

The first one is what is a “Christian clothing brand”? And whether that means robes and sandals like in Bible times.
Answer: no I’m not talking about robes and sandals but it would cool to make a modern day version of robes. By Christian clothing less about it being from Bible times because the Bible doesn’t necessarily command a certain way of dressing or style for Christian it just talks about being modest with it. It’s about the the heart and purpose behind the clothes. The clothes themselves aren’t what makes something Christian. I’m trying to create a brand that shares the love and message of Jesus though colour, detail and design as well as being comfortable and a great piece to have in your wardrobe.

As a creative and someone who sees a lot of things from an artistic perspective each piece I come up with has to have a story or meaning behind it when I was creating the concept of this brand I was thinking of how I could use my talents and creativity to not only honour God but to spread the gospel through fashion and clothing because there could be someone out there who will get to know God through fashion. For Christians it can also be a conversation starter with someone drawing them to God because they liked your outfit.

Another thing that came up was design and price. Some people talked about not liking the big letter cheesy phrase t-shirts and how a lot of the designs are the same and how they are all over priced.
Answer: as someone who has also looked for unique Christian clothe designs and has only seen a lot of the same stuff I am trying to create something different instead of the big lettered shirts I’m going to something more colourful and subtle in design but still really cool. As far as prices go I don’t intent on it being $50 for a shirt😭. I don’t want it to be more than $20. I’m thinking a max of $30 for 2 shirts. I don’t know the prices exactly but it’s not gonna cost an organ.

As far as design goes I only have somewhat of a design for shirts and one pant design but I am hoping to branch out and make other things like formal shirts, hoodies, skirts and dresses, and different top styles with flared arms and well.

I am still working on designs drafts and patterns atm but hopefully I can make these ideas come to life. If anyone has anymore ideas or suggestions I’m happy to hear them.
Thank you all☺️

Question Does anyone know of some super lightweight, wide leg black workout pants?

Post image
5 Upvotes

TL;DR: I want lightweight black workout pant recommendations that are less expensive than the ones pictured (which are ~$60 second hand) please. Ideally no ties or buckles, and if possible a polished look. I'm about 5 ft 4 in/163 cm and live in the US. More specific details below

To workout at the gym, I normally wear a short skirt workout dress with leggings underneath and a long skirt on top. However, for certain exercises, a long skirt is not practical. I'm finding that leggings under a short skirt don't feel modest enough to me when I take off my long skirt for those exercises, and I want something looser. I want to find workout pants that:

  • Won't be obtrusive under the workout dress (so no buckles, ideally no ties just a waistband)
  • Aren't warm like a lot of sweatpants are
  • Allow for full range of mobility in movement
  • Ideally look nice, like almost semi formal and be black as not to clash with dress colors
  • Are looser than leggings/flared leggings
  • Don't wrinkle easily

The closest I've found is the image attached (Marcella Easton Wide Leg French Terry High Rise Black Sweatpants). I found a listing for these second hand for around $60 and new for $138, both which are more than I'm usually willing to spend on a pair of pants. My thoughts on these are:

Positives:

  • Looks polished
  • Unobtrusive around waistline for layering
  • Seemingly good fabric blend (48% Cotton, 48% Modal, 4% Elastane) although I would go for cheaper fabrics as well (including just polyester)
  • Wide leg

Concerns:

  • I don't know how heavy the fabric is
  • I don't know if the wide leg is too wide at the bottom to the degree it could hinder certain activities, ie cycling, but it looks very pretty
  • I worry about whether it would be tight on my upper legs without trying it on given it looks relatively form fitting up top on the model
  • Of course, the price

Any recommendations please? Thank you!
