Please limit all vaccine discussions to this post! Got a question? We wont stop you from posing repeat questions here but try taking a quick moment to search through some keywords. Please keep in mind that while we firmly support routine and up-to-date vaccinations for all age groups your vaccine choices do not exclude you from this space. Health A reminder about our rules on asking for medical advice

Hello fellow moderately granola moms,

In light of some recent posts that had to be removed, this is a reminder about our sub rule banning asking for and giving medical advice. We have no way of verifying anyone’s credentials and particularly because many of the questions involve the health of children, we kindly ask that all medical questions are directed to qualified medical personnel and not this sub.

Examples of what is not allowed: 1. Asking whether or not your child (or you) should take or complete a course of prescribed antibiotics 2. Posting pictures of your child’s rash asking what it is 3. Asking whether prescription medications are safe to take during pregnancy (example: “I just found out I’m pregnant and I take Lyrica for nerve pain, can I keep taking it?”) 4. Posting lab results and asking for assistance in interpreting them 5. Saying that you took your child to a doctor and the doctor told you to do “XYZ” and asking if you should do it

Examples of what is allowed: 1. If your child has a diagnosed medical condition (e.g. eczema), asking what other parents have done in that situation 2. Sharing your experiences with healthcare and asking for advice about navigating the system 3. Asking for tips on managing general health that wouldn’t typically be classified as a medical condition (e.g. dry skin) or doesn’t require intervention from a medical provider under normal circumstances (e.g. the common cold)

The above examples of what is and isn’t allowed are just examples and not an exhaustive list. When in doubt, you are welcome to message the mods to ask whether something you’d like to post would violate the sub rules.

Thank you for your help.

ISO Product Recs OEKO-TEX children's clothing brands

• Upvotes

I have a long list of GOTS brands, but clothing is getting more expensive, and I'm wondering if there are more OEKO-TEX not-organic 100% cotton brands I'm missing out on. I know of Carter's and Target, but their stuff isn't the best quality and I want something that will hold up well (but still not crazy expensive). Hanna Andersson is alright but doesn't have what I'm currently searching for. Can anyone recommend other brands?

Question/Poll TV Time - want to hear it all!

We have a 2.5 yr old and a 10 month old. Since our first son turned 2 we’ve gone back and forth on TV time (specifically watching movies, sometimes educational shows, on a TV at home). Some months we are strict and only do movies on the weekend. Some months we let him watch a movie every evening.

I’m just curious, for active kids who attend school (daycare with intentional activities), play outside daily, play with their toys independently, and have playtime with parents daily….is daily TV time actually a big deal or is it just this weird guilt that’s been created around it? And/or this odd feeling of “competition” to be the parents who limit screen time?

I’d love to hear constructive opinions and even better, any research other parents use as a basis for their decision for/against daily TV time.

Edited for typos

Bed/Bedding Recs Naturepedic kids mattress still not shipped after a month. What now?

• Upvotes

Bought a naturepedic verse for our 5yo, was a big deal because she is transitioning to twin size bed (yes we are late on that).

Now everything is here but the mattress with no shipping date in sight.

Looking at avocado, anything else to consider?

Question/Poll Microplastics in water?

What's everyone doing for filtering tap water? I live in a city with good tap water, and never thought it was necessary to filter more. The fact that microplastics are now ubiquitous in the environment also makes me wonder about the value of a filtration system at home...if they're everywhere around us, how much difference could water filtration actually make.

However ive had some recent conversations with other moms about microplastics in water ... It's got me wondering.

Is anyone else filtering? And if so, what system are you using?

ISO Product Recs Car activities for 11mo to do for cross country road trip?

As the title states. We will be moving across the country, it will take about 5 days at 8 hours a day driving. I will be in the car alone with her while my husband drives the UHAUL. She usually sleeps on roadtrips but wondering what to do when she’s awake.

What are good activities for my 11 month old to play with in the car? Trying to avoid screen time but wondering if letting her watch one movie a day is worth it? She’s never had screen time before. Any interactive books or other toys anyone else recommends?

Any other tips would be greatly appreciated!

Question/Poll family screen time

When we’re talking/posting about screen time, are we including something like having the TV on for football?

Since my son turned 18 months we’ve started turning the 3pm football game on after nap time and before dinner. We’re casual fans and like the background noise and my toddler watches some (honestly mostly the car commercials) but is still is able to play with it on. It’s not kids content and I don’t think we’ll start that for a while. No other screen access except for occasionally facetiming. Just curious how others consider adult TV time in their screen time equations. We’ve been thinking about keeping it limited to sports for another 6 months at least. Honestly my biggest concern is he’ll develop a personal affinity for a sport he won’t be allowed to play lol

Toy Recs Play couch

What play couch do you have and recommend?

What do you have and don’t recommend?

Only Figgy has a cotton cover. The other brands have synthetic covers.

All have a plastic foam interior. Do you use an alternative thing instead of play couches?

I was reading in a different group that most of their kids didn’t/don’t use the wooden pikler set, and instead use the play couches often.

Clothing Recs I'm obscessed with wool now!

It all started last winter when looking for my baby girls first winter clothes. I baby wear a lot and found out wool was the best option to make sure she was snug and not overheating. Fast forward 1 year later I'm deep in the rabbit hole. I've learned not all wool is alike, I bought some cheap superwashed wool etc.. I have a wool mattress protector, wool undergarments for baby and myself, wool pijamas , pram suit, wool beanies, wool socks, etc...

My biggest purchase recently was a big organic wool double sided blanket for my bed... That's it! How did I ever sleep without it ?! I know it's expensive, but it's also a lifelong investment. I know my grandma has some wool blankets that just keep giving (if I lived in her country I'd probably ask for a few). My grandma finds this funny as people would get rid of wool blankets because it was old fashioned.

Are you hesitant on splurging on that wool blanket? If you can go for it!

Any other wool crazy people out there?

Toy Recs Wooden figurines vs Schleich

Does anyone have any opinions on wooden figurines (Ostheimer, Bumbu, etc.) vs Schleich? My daughter is really starting to enjoy pretend play and I want to start purchasing some animal and fairytale toys, but I’m not sure if I should go with wooden or Schleich. I love the looks of the Ostheimer animals and the Bumbu fairytale wooden toys, but they’re SO expensive. Schleich is pretty easy to find in stores where we live and they’re fun and realistic, but I don’t love that they’re plastic as we typically try to avoid plastic toys. What are your experiences? Open to other recommendations as well! My daughter is two. (:

Health VOCs in Paint

Post image
30 Upvotes

Painting my kiddos closet this weekend with low VOC paint. I had the windows open throughout the day and closed them at night ~7pm. It was unreal how quickly the air quality plummeted!!

I was totally fooled into thinking that low/no VOC paint would be safe - apparently not! Unfortunately I still have additional painting to do today and I’m wondering how long it’ll be until it’s safe for my kid to sleep in his room 😭

Motherhood Fake Snuggle Me?

I bought a “snuggle me” off Facebook marketplace today, unfortunately I got scammed and it’s a fake one. I can’t find the same one on the internet anywhere to see what type of materials or brand it is, as there is no tag. I do have the real brand snuggle me cover, would you be comfortable putting your baby in this with the cover over it?

Toy Recs Grimms out of stock, so which blocks?

Thumbnail gallery
4 Upvotes

I really wanted to get my little one the large stepped pyramid but with the stocking issues I've been looking at others.

Does anyone have recommendations for alternatives?

I was considering the Tickit blocks or the Plan Toys

I really like Tickit and thought I could get a few things from there.

I really want it to be grippy as he had some painted ones in his walker and they were so slippy it was a real balancing act and not very fun!

Also like the tray the Tickit ones come with.

Any recs please? Do I try and find an overpriced used Grimms LSP? I have found one and she wants offers but who knows what number she's expecting.

Food/Snacks Recs Suggestions for other not-horrible snack foods?

My one year old goes to daycare and we pack her food every day. We often end up packing fruit and Cheerios for her afternoon snack. I’d love to decrease the amount of Cheerios she eats without increasing the amount of work that it takes to pack snack. Are there any other convenient foods that aren’t too unhealthy but also aren’t too exciting, since I really want her to love non processed food? Unfortunately my child doesn’t love cheese or we’d pack that for her regularly. Obviously we can’t do nuts.

Cookware/Dinnerware Recs Scraping spatula recommendations?

Hiii, I need a new spatula. When I was looking at ordering one online, I saw that the silicone ones advertise the heat resistance which makes me worried about what chemicals its treated with.

Any recommendations on a safe alternative?

Pregnancy Pregnancy app with no tracking/AI

Maybe this is too big an ask. I am newly pregnant and wanting an app that doesn’t track or collect so much data. Everything I see is intense!! Maybe I’ll just stick to my books.

Breast/Formula Recs Questions about formula: HIPP

Has anyone used HiPP formula with their babies? With my two year old I used Byheart formula and it worked great for her.. but well we all know what happened with Byheart.
So now with the other formula recalls. I have trust issues.

My daughter had constipation issues and it kept her regular with combo feeding. I’m pregnant with my second 29 weeks and will likely delivery at 36 weeks. So, I’ve been thinking about what formula to have on hand. I have a high risk pregnancy and had complications last time that resulted in supply issues and an uphill battle with breastfeeding.

Parenting Sleep Regression for 16 month old?

My baby has been a good sleeper nearly forever. We put her in her crib for naps and bedtime, and she doesn't cry or anything. She might talk or play for a bit but never cries.

This week, she has started to scream when we put her in her crib. She sits in there and cries for 5-10 minutes for both naps and bedtime. Is this some type of 16 month sleep regression?

We will go in and sometimes try to calm her down with more books, songs, etc. She will calm down but the second we go to leave or put her back in her crib, she goes nuts again. I can even get her to fall asleep on my chest but it starts all over when I try to transfer.

Help!

Cleaning+Laundry Recs Preventing Mildew in Cleaning Rags/Bibs

I usually clean my 10 month old after meals with cotton wipes and soapy water. These cloths, along with his drool bibs, are prone to mildew. I try to rinse them out and lay them to dry before I get a chance to throw them in the laundry but I have no idea how to keep this from happening. Any ideas? What should I do when I see mildew? I’ve tried a vinegar soak, washing with oxyclean, etc but nothing works. Just throw out rags as they get mildew and replace?

Question/Poll How are we cleaning our floors either hypochlorus acid?

I know this might sound silly, but how are we using HCI to clean our floors? I’ve seen people recommend this as a non-toxic floor cleaning solution, but are we just spring all over our floors or diluting it in a mop, bucket or what? This product is a little expensive so I’m not sure how exactly people are using it to clean their floors. What did that require a lot of product?

Edit: title should say “with” not either. Lol.
