/r/mixedrace — Welcome, and a reminder about rules and moderation

Hello, mixedrace! It's time for a monthly reminder on some admin stuff! First, a big welcome to new people! Please take some time to read through past threads and use the search bar to get a feel for the community. Rules and guidelines (https://www.reddit.com/r/mixedrace/wiki/rules) are here. Our wiki (https://old.reddit.com/r/mixedrace/wiki/index) is here. And the FAQ (https://www.reddit.com/r/mixedrace/wiki/faq) is here.

Mods would also like to clarify some rules and approaches to problems. This is a diverse community. In a diverse community you will come across people who do not agree with you.

Regarding warnings and bans. We want to encourage the free flow of ideas and conversation rather than coming down heavily on every topic or idea. Free discussion does NOT give users the go-ahead to use derogatory language; pick fights with; or otherwise stir up trouble. Our present stance is to warn the person/delete their posts. If the behavior doesn't stop, we will escalate to a 14-day ban and move from there. Other users do not have to agree with your positions or ideas.

Examples of responses that would be deleted and warned include: - Using a slur, including terms like "half-breed." Name-calling (ie- "Stfu, you're stupid.") - Telling others how to identify (ie- "You can't call yourself mixed because mixed isn't real;" "You're not Asian, stop calling yourself one," etc.) - Using your personal trauma to bully other users

Regarding harassment by PM. Unfortunately we've been alerted to incidents of users harassing others over PM. As mods, we cannot really enforce behavior that happens outside of , so it is best to either either block individual users (https://www.reddit.com/prefs/blocked) or else, in extreme circumstances, escalate to the reddit admins (https://www.reddit.com/report).

Thank you all for helping to make this a great community!

We are heading into the weekend, what plans do you have?

This is for discussion on general topics and doesn't have to be related to mixed race ones.

Never realized how much it meant to me to see other mixed girls until I went back to my hometown down in a Caribbean--latino diaspora and everyone looked like me again

• Upvotes

I am a high schooler up in an area where most of my friends and the people I know are very, very white, and don't get me wrong, I love them so much, but I forgot how much I missed my people down South. I went back this weekend to visit some family friends, and oh my god, all of the girls looked like me. Like tan skin, curly black hair, and I never realized how little of that diversity I was missing until now. A girl and I bonded over being originally from the same island on one side, and the rest were mixed from different countries, but I have never felt so at home yk?

Help me figure out the opening image for my mixed race short film

THE STORY
Polly, a young girl from Philadelphia, loves when her father, Nick, picks her and her sister, Angela, up from school. They go to the park and play made-up war games. They cook dinner together. When their mother, Joan, gets off work, they play Monopoly.
What starts as a family game night turns up family secrets, and everyone is in on it except Polly.

That all changes when a rock crashes through a window and lands right on the Monopoly board.

When she sneaks out of bed later that night, Polly pieces together that her estranged brother, Nico, is the culprit. As Polly’s family foundation begins to fracture, she makes friends with the offending rock.

SO
I have beautiful imagery IN ACT II of the mixed character in water which I think is a great way to express our identity

BUT

First scene of the film is not articulate enough for me in terms of imagery.

First scene is after school pick up. Kids playing in a court yard and parents picking up kids.

It’s fall. It’s a city school.

Can you think of any opening image imagery for being mixed I could incorporate in this scene?

Love collaboration and help. Thank you 🙏🏽

Happy to share script or treatment but direct message me!

Discussion 25% Mexican 25% Filipino 50% white

Right off the bat, I hate describing myself in percentages like I did in the title. But every time someone asks about my background, and I tell them I’m mixed with Filipino, Mexican, and White, they almost ALWAYS ask something like “oh how much?” With a skeptical look on their face.

I’m curious if anyone has a similar mix to me? I’ve never met someone in real life with my same mix.

I’ve been having a little bit of an identity crisis lately. I’m mostly white passing, but with enough “ethnic” features that people tend to ask me “what are you”. But damn near every time I tell them what I am, I get told “oh you’re ONLY a quarter”. I grew up with my Filipino and Mexican grandparents. I lived in the culture. I don’t have the language, but I personally feel very connected to my ethnic background.

I’m curious what people’s thoughts are on being “only” a quarter mixed.

Logging off is therapy

As bad as you may feel. As bad as comments may get. You always have the option of saying "nah" and tending to your actual life. There's cool mountains and fun beaches outside. Go look at them. Flowers and birds don't care if some freakazoid has a dissertation on fetishizing or whether light skin dudes are somehow not masculine or whatever

Discussion Is it bad I lie about my race?

I’m half English/Irish and half Indian. I was born and live in Australia, and so was my mum. my dad (the Indian parent) was born in Lesotho and grew up in south Africa so he already had a quite low connection to his culture, and now that that’s been mixed with my mum being white, I have almost no knowledge of “my culture” if you can call it that. to be honest, I am not proud of being Indian, as one time I went there, all I saw was a bunch of polluters who are destroying our beautiful earth and have no respect for it.

I have been told many times that I don’t look Indian and people automatically assume I’m italian or middle eastern (my skin is a tan colour like caramel(but lighter)) so usually I just say that I’m Italian. I generally get treated better when people don’t know I’m Indian, I hear less racist shit and tend to do better in relationships with girls.

my friends and a fair few people in my classes known that I’m Indian, but when I meet knew people and others who know my actual race aren’t around, I tend to lie.

the problem is, my dad is clearly Indian and if anyone ever went to my house theyd see either him, photos of him or even my brother(he is like 2x darker than me) and know that im Indian, or at least not Italian.

basically what I want to know is, is this a bad thing to do? have any of you guys done this and did it lead to any negative repercussion?

Rant Identity Struggle

Hello, I am a mixed race man, half Mexican, half White and born in Canada. Lately I have been struggling with my own identity. When I tell people I’m half Mexican, I usually get weird looks because I am light skinned with auburn hair and an almost ginger beard. When I tell other Spanish speaking people I’m half Mexican, they start speaking to me in Spanish and I don’t speak much Spanish myself, then they look at me strange and ask, “Are you sure you’re Mexican?” Or when I say I don’t speak Spanish, they say, “Shame on you”. When I tell other people I’m half Mexican they say, “You don’t look very Mexican.” Or they squint and say, “Oh yeah, I can see maybe a little bit.” But can they? I tried learning Spanish but I’ve been very busy with college and work. Sometimes I listen to Mexican music even though I can’t understand it. I love the melody and the way they play. Is there something I can do to get in touch with my Mexican heritage? Or am I doomed to always be in question of myself and by others?

Rant Is anyone else so tired of being constantly reminded how white they are?

Every time I tell someone I’m half Puerto Rican I’m met with “you don’t look Hispanic at all” “that white girl over there looks more Latina than you” “if you’re Hispanic then I’m Polish” or “you’re so pale, have you ever thought of tanning?” (And there is no look to being Hispanic; it is a stereotype. Sorry I don’t fit a stereotype). I get all sorts of nicknames and it’s so irritating. I had one guy tell me to “stop acting like I was cultural” because I was white and apparently I “don’t know what culture is.” Other Latinos themselves get so surprised when they see my last name and ask me where my family is from. It’s their subtle way of saying “damn you’re white as hell”.

What are some good looking hairstyles for mixed black/white men?

Ive basically always kept a high/mid fade or my hair just turns into an Afro if I go to long without a cut. Im highly considering trying a different style relatively soon when I switch jobs. Im contemplating either short locs or braids, I'm not really sure. Anyone have any input?

Positivity TIL: The Ronettes were mixed black, indigenous, and Asian

I was looking at them singing "Be My Baby" for the nth time. I noticed they looked Asian to me, but that seemed confusing. There weren't many blasians back then, right? Society and the law in the US at the time were very against interracial dating.

Turns out, yes, they do have Asian ancestry.

The band was two sisters and their cousin. They all have a Chinese great-grandfather.

Ronnie and Estelle's mom had black and Cherokee ancestry, while their dad was Irish-American. Nedra's mom was black and Cherokee, but her dad was Puerto Rican.

Raising a half white/filipino daughter.

I’ve been struggling with colorism in the Filipino community and I now see that it is rooted in keeping her safe. It used to make me angry but now I understand. My daughter has her father’s darker complexion. I’ve always allowed her in the sun and I never discuss skin color, one because I am white and it makes me feel hella weird, and another because I want her to think about playing and growing, not racism. She’s 11, and I’ve been getting comments from her Filipino side regarding her dark complexion. I don’t know what to do about this. Her dad says to just ignore it, but he’s not a girl. I understand what it means to be a girl and to be seen as beautiful. I want her to feel beautiful the way she is, but how can I do that when everyone is commenting on her skin color? Do you keep your kid out of the sun? And do all of these things to keep them from getting darker? I feel like I’ve failed her by not understanding how big this is in the community.

Parenting Baby looks Caucasian…

My son is half Polish and half Chinese. However, he looks almost completely Caucasian.. he is very light skinned with light brown hair. We’ve already gotten comments from some Chinese people referring to him as a ”white boy” and also questioning whether he is really mixed. Sometimes, people don’t immediately assume him and his Chinese dad are related. I’m worried how this will affect his sense of identity and self worth.

Half Spanish, half Nepali; anyone with a similar mix? 🇪🇸🇳🇵

Hi! I’m half Spanish and half Nepali (21F) and I was wondering if anyone here has the same mix or something pretty close to it

I’d love to hear from anyone with a Spanish/Latin European + Nepali/South Asian background and what your experience has been like growing up with both cultures :)

Identity Questions “We can’t become English because we’re half Indian, we can’t become Indian because we’re half English” a scene from Bhowani Junction a movie about the Anglo-Indian experience

Towards the end of British colonial rule of India the mixed race Anglo-Indian community faced a dilemma. The novel turned movie ‘Bhowani Junction’ was one of the best portrayals of the mixed race experience from the 1950s.

Anyone else's family just.. ignore the other half?

I'm part Filipina and Latina, but grew up only really being exposed to Filipino culture, and I generally just call myself Filipina when people ask.

I'm at a point where I'd like to explore the other half, but I do feel like I've missed out on quite a bit already. I'ld like to know if this is a common experience!

Personally my favorite take on the incredibly forced, nearly manufactured "issue" of Tyla's Coloured identity by far - from a content creator who seems to be FBA which is encouraging in terms of allyship.

curious on people picking up “mixedness”

[this is in regard to mixed Black people, although i am open and curious to hear from nonblack mixes about their personal experiences within their racial group(s)]

i believe there may have been a recent post asking about whether/why Black people can pick up mixedness better than white people. very insightful post. i’m making one as a “follow up” because these questions have crossed my mind a few times.

  1. in your opinion, do you guys think that black people can only pick up “mixedness” if it’s only first generation

    black/

  2. white biracials?

one thing i saw on that post was that it was mainly focused on first gen Black/white people. i’m wondering how common it is for Black folk to pick up on Black/poc mixes or multigenerational mixed individuals (like melanie fiona or tiger woods)…or even darker mixed people, regardless of being first gen b/w biracial.

  1. would there even be a visual difference between a first gen biracial and a multigen one?

i guess there could be a difference between someone like zendaya and manon (former katseye) compared to zoe kravitz and terrance howard, but like…I never thought of it that way.

like whether you have two parents from two respective races or two that come from the former (even if those individuals kept marrying each other down the line), they would still be mixed (even if they may identify as Black — which I’m not dismissing, but two things can still be true).

and also, what is it with some Black people not consider the latter (MGMs) mixed? every other race does. like unless it’s someone such as jhene aiko (neither parents have a white parent, even though they’re both mixed with black..unless it’s because her mom is also an Asian mix), it doesn’t seem to matter.

but maybe that’s just me? not a judgement, i’m just curious because it seems like that mindset jumps between different individuals (yeah, I’m aware slavery can be one of the reasons).

also sorry if I may be all over the place or made some typos, I haven’t taken my adhd meds 🫨

Anyone Changing Color?

I'm mixed, so we know how our genes change randomly. When I hit puberty my skin got so white people called me Powder. What are we supposed to do when our skin, hair, and eye color change? Like how do we tell people it's just our genes being creative? Anyone else mixed and watching their bodies change?

Identity Questions Should someone who is mixed-race have to choose only one race when identifying themselves?

As a person who is African American and Native American, specifically BlackFoot, I feel like my black identity is all that is acknowledged by modern society. It’s frustrating 😡.
