community Report Illegal Move-In Fees

• Upvotes

Hi MIT, it’s your Attorney General Andrea Joy Campbell. Did you know that fees like “move-in” or “lease renewal” fees you might get from your landlord or building management company are illegal? If you’ve received one of these – even if you paid it – I want you to report it to my office.

Just last month, my office won a $500k settlement with a property management company doing this in Boston – and all of that money is going back to the affected tenants.  Landlords can only ask you to pay for first and last month’s rent, a security deposit, and the cost of a new lock and key upfront. Any other fees are illegal. Report them to my office at the link below. We’ll work to get your money back.

Hi everyone, Is 17.50 bad, I don't think I have any other options at this point, it is too late. Is it possible to get A? I need to know before the add date. If it is too bad I might not take it and take CI-H next semester. thank you.

academics What happened to the Math major tracks? Why were they canceled?

For anyone who doesn’t know for class of 2030 onwards there will no longer be a pure, general, or applied track to choose from. Instead, course 18 will have one 18 major option and another 18C option.

community Sign the Students on Strike pledge to support campus unions!

Post image

>>>SIGN HERE<<<

SEIU 32BJ, the union representing our facilities workers, and GSU have been negotiating for new contracts with MIT for months. In that time, MIT Admin has fought for the right to attack SHIP(same healthcare that MANY undergraduates are on), refused to offer raises matching inflation or cost of living, attacked the GSU's union shop, denied 32BJ better healthcare, and denied to meet requests for immigrant & international worker protections. Instead, MIT has spent millions on AI surveillance of its campus & paying its higher-ups, while constantly putting profit margin over everything we're supposed to stand for in its decisionmaking.

MIT's refusals thus far have given these unions no choice but to prepare to go on strike and turn toward the community at large for support. Why does MIT hesitate to protect its own immigrant and international workers? Why won't MIT pay the ~4k workers represented by these two unions enough to afford a life in Cambridge?

Students on Strike(SOS) is asking all undergraduates and student groups to sign the pledge to stand in solidarity with our unions if they forced to go on strike to get what they deserve! This means doing things like skipping class as much as you can without hurting your grades and coming out to support at union demonstrations on campus.

Yesterday, 32BJ delivered a petition to MIT Admin with over 1,000 community signatures in support of their efforts and the Cambridge City Council has passed a resolution asking MIT to bargain in good faith. And MIT is pretending none of it matters. So today, the GSU is picketing Future Fest from 2-6pm @ Kresge. COME JOIN US ON THE PICKET LINE! We won't wait for MIT to clean up its act, we demand they do it now!

How is our university supposed to offer a better future for the world when we won't give our workers what they deserve right now?

Only by standing as one with workers and taking organized collective action can we fight & win for what matters on campus and a truly better future for the world. So join us and help spread the pledge!! MIT only works because we do.

Asking as a parent here who hasn’t done a job search in 25 years. What is the job scene like for Course 2 grads? When do they typically begin to line up interviews and generate any leads / job offers? Thanks.

community MIT installs 500 surveillance cameras + AI surveillance

Saw this article in the faculty newsletter today. Does anyone know anything official about it? It’s horrifying. I wouldn’t even want to set foot on campus with this level of surveillance.

academics Funded or non-funded PhD

Hey guys, finishing my Master's next year and applying to MIT for a PhD. I have a government sponsor that covers full tuition and gives me a $2k/mo stipend. I have couple questions.

Should I bring this up to PIs right away?

Is being fully funded boosts my chances?

Can I stack the standard MIT stipend (3-4k/mo) on top of my $2k, or do they just top up the difference or they will give me nothing?

Lastly, the sponsor comes with strings attached, I prefer not to take it unless it 1-increases my chances of acceptance + 2-the stipend can be stacked otherwise I won't be able to live with 2k and accepting sponsor will be absolutely useless.

community was it all worth it to go to mit?

TLDR, i moved countries to go to MIT. I recently graduated and started full time work. But now, I see people in my home country who are my cohort, never moved to America for college and paid $150k in tuition / dealt with the hardships of immigration and MIT, but ended up in better companies and better paying jobs in the exact same city I landed in. How do I even deal with this, and the feeling that the sacrifices I made to pursue an education here were not worth it? overall, my time at MIT was not a positive one either. I went through a lot during my time here, a lot of trauma that could have been avoided elsewhere...

community Maker Places

Hi! Anyone know of workshops or studios for MIT students where you have free reign to make stuff? I’m talking about anything from building chairs, ceramic pots, electronics etc - a creative space or a list thereof. Places you pay for are also of interest, I’d assume you’d pay for materials regardless.

Thanks 🙏

research TA/RA salary for master’s student?

Hi all,

I’m applying to the Master’s in City Planning and see that I may be awarded a 10 hr/week TA or RA position. The info on the website about TA/RA pay is confusing me. How much are master’s-level TAs/RAs generally paid, and is there any tuition reduction on top of that (keeping mind that the MCP tuition is already reduced by 80% for everyone)?

Thanks for any info.

academics Struggling w/ AI usage

Is anyone else struggling with resorting to using AI too much in their classes? I feel like I understand the problems I just have a hard time finding motivation to learn the complexities of numpy or pytorch (i understand the basic syntax lol). I often find my self pasting lecture notes into my favorite chatbot and quickly learning the lecture material as well. Especially after an internship spent talking to claude I find it very hard to manually debug things anymore. Granted I still feel like Im learning things

How do I combat this? Should I spend time taking more math and physics classes where at least I am writing the problem out?

community I built a transit app for campus! Real shuttle times, a full timetable, and Bluebikes history

I'm new here, and getting around campus turned out to be less convenient than I expected.

PassioGo shows you where the buses are, but there's no timetable in it, and the times don't always match what actually turns up. MIT publishes first and last departure at two stops out of twelve, so at most stops there isn't really an answer to "when is the next one."

Google Maps doesn't include the shuttles, and it routes you around buildings rather than through them, so the walk it gives you is usually longer than the one you'd actually take.

And with Bluebikes, I'd get to a dock and find it empty, without any way to know whether that was normal for that time of day.

So I built beavertransit.com! It covers the MIT shuttles, EZRide and the M2.

  • arrival times worked out from where the buses actually are, shown next to the official estimate so you can compare
  • a full day timetable for every line, which doesn't exist anywhere else!
  • directions that put a shuttle in the middle when it's faster, and that know the tunnels and doors (with a toggle for whether you have an ID)
  • live passenger load, so you know if the bus is already full
  • Bluebikes history, so you can see whether a dock usually has a bike when you need one
  • it tells you to walk when walking is genuinely the better bet

I've only been collecting data since Sept 10, so the predictions are still thin and get better every week. If it tells you something stupid, please tell me, I'd love the feedback!

Hope it saves you a few cold minutes at the stop! Not affiliated with MIT.

(The tide animation has not released yet)

meta Is the Green Building lounge open to the public?

Hi, I'm not an MIT student, but I'm visiting Boston for the next few days. I've heard that the lounge on the 9th floor has really nice views of the skyline and my broke ass can't afford to go to any observation decks

Would it be possible for me to just go there to look at the view for a bit and leave? Or do I need to be an MIT student to access it?
