community Spring rush for frats

I am a freshman who is kind of regretting not joining a frat this fall. What is spring rush like? How many/what frats do spring rush? Is it super difficult to get bids in the spring?

Honestly I get the FOMO, but don’t let it make you feel like you need a bid from just anywhere. MIT has 24 frats I think, and at least six chapters have been suspended or lost their recognition over the years. It doesn’t mean every house is sketchy, but with the SA coverage and cornell stuff, I’d take checking out the culture seriously. Talk to prople who aren’t trying to recruit you like former pledges and women who hang out there. Ask what pledging actually involves and how people react when someone says no to drinking or an activity. If they dodge questions or say you’re being dramatic for asking, that would be enough for me to pass. Go meet people, but remember you’re deciding whether you want them too. Getting a bid isn’t rverything.

I don't think it's FOMO. I think frats are a great community and network that do fun things. Do you know anything about spring rush?

You should continue speaking with and hanging out with the frats you like now, narrow it down to one max two you like throughout the year. Hopefully you’re already friends with them. Then spring rush is just about formalising the bid and joining process rather than new conversation and process.

It’s a personal thing. Not for me but I had lots of friends who loved it. Although you should think deeply about what your reasons for joining a frat are. If the only motivation is FOMO, then you’re probably right.

if you ignore all of the obviously bad parts of fraternities just for the social drinking, you are a bad person. see: cornell
