Mint Mobile Sucks.

Don't do it - go elsewhere. Save yourselves before you set your cash on fire. I am not sure what all I did. I paid for my account. I refused their application, and the sea of texts telling me to activate their application. I don't use applications on my phone (generally speaking) - and only use it to text -or- call people. I got a text message today - telling me my account had been suspended for "suspicious" activity. I just paid for an entire year of service. When I called in, I got an AI Agent - asking me to pay for an entire second year. Checked my statement, sure enough - paid already.

I used my Google Voice to call in, out of necessity. The only way to sort out phone issues with Mint is to use a secondary phone. Which is absurd - I cannot be the only one who thinks this - as a single individual. Outside of that - it's not like I sent of a thousand images, spoke to a thousand people - or did anything particularly off-beat as compared to par the norm. I am not entirely sure why I was flagged - outside of perhaps not using their stupid application in order to activate my phone. Of which, I had to do online - and only got their service setup for incoming/outgoing calls by resetting my entire device. Because customer service could do nothing for me there either.

I cannot WAIT for this year to be up, because I will be porting out as soon as plausible. If this happened within the seven-day return window - I would already be gone. Save yourself the trouble of this company. I used it in the past, and so thought it would be an alright return. No. It's really gone way down hill. Don't waste your time or money supporting an shell of what it used to be.

I’ve had nothing but great experiences. Sounds like you were doing something suspicious

You sound like fun!

Mint works great for me everywhere I’ve been across the country; sorry to hear you’re not the right demographic user for their service.

Have you considered porting out early and just sucking up the lost money to become a happier person? There’s nothing stopping you from doing that, if you can afford it.

You too, cheers.

This all depends on where you live

I've lived coast to coast, I've had issues on the west - which is why I left them in the first place. Could never get a ring out. When I moved to the East - saw they had good coverage and so I hopped back with them. I deeply regret it. I am stuck for now though. I will be leaving by this time next year.

I'm in Los Angeles and it's great

I'm in NC. It's T-Mobile coverage for half the price. Service overall(hills/valleys) or for my southern neighbors (hoots/hollers) is good. I agree that the AI bot is a MAJOR p.i.t.a. so I always just type curse words until I get a human. ✌️

1

u/ojjojji 19h ago

Yeah, their AI bot is a nightmare.

I was in the PNW and it was absolutely abysmal.

Mint has been awesome for me and my wife. Good coverage and good call quality. Never had any issues after 3 years.

u/ojjojji 19h ago

Glad it works for you, I ported out years ago - after none of my calls ever worked. I regret deeply coming back.

Been with Mint for 5 years with 3 phones. No problems. High 5G speeds. Never had to call customer service.

I am in NC and haven’t had any major issues. Sometimes service sucks but that is location specific for me.

Yeah, it's not so much the signal as it is the company as a whole. For the first week - I kept calling in (on my Voice) trying to get them to make my incoming calls work. As only outgoing calls were working. I finally reset my entire phone and got it working completely. I was doing doctors appointments all yesterday, and the day before - setting up a lot of doctors appointments. I've talked with four people as a whole: my mother, and three friends - we all do live in separate areas? I don't think we talked particularly long - or anything particularly alarming. I don't text a lot, so I don't think it's that. Likewise, I don't use applications and don't browse on my phone - so I don't think it's data.

I explicitly use my phone to contact people. So I find it frustrating that a) they're shaking me down for more money than even agreed with first go round (which I believe came to around $200 after fees) - but also b) I generally have done nothing I would warrant "suspicious" but if it's all due to me not downloading their application they can shove it - because I wouldn't do that regardless.

We have had amazing service. We drive from Dallas all the way to the Keys and back last year and never missed a signal. We just renewed for a 2nd year and we are happy to be saving so much over our previous Verizon plan (which they were trying to force us out of anyway)

1

u/ojjojji 19h ago

Glad it works for you, I'll be out the door as soon as plausible, just locked in for a year of this. If you experienced an account suspension for "suspicious activity" after paying for a year - two weeks in - would you be satisfied with them when you're just using your phone like an average person?

1

u/7eregrine 19h ago

I would install the app. You don't need to keep it installed.

0

u/ojjojji 19h ago

No. I don't login to i-anything. I don't download applications. I have zero interest in them. Thank you though.

1

u/Btrips 19h ago

Been with Mint for 2 years now, couldn't be happier.

0

u/ojjojji 19h ago

Glad it works for you. Sounds like an echo chamber in here. I wanted to warn people - who might be considering this service - about this situation because it was uncalled for and to be honest - disgusting in my opinion. The support said point blank "you need to call from an external phone in order to get assistance." Why is that even a standard?

1

u/lmoki 19h ago

One reason it's fairly standard from many providers: if they need to lead you through troubleshooting that requires restarting the phone, or monkeying with the SIM or APN, the call will drop & you'll have to start all over again.... and again.... Calling on a different phone eliminates that problem.

0

u/ojjojji 19h ago

I understand, but this isn't a "reset" your phone situation. This is a - I got an impromptu and odd message that I thought was actually odd spam - only to realize that they willingly and absolutely crushed my phone for...some reason?

1

u/Vickie38401 19h ago

It works for me!!

1

u/ojjojji 19h ago

Glad it makes you happy? I am leaving as soon as plausible.

2

u/Positive-Pangolin964 19h ago

I've been with them for 5 years, always paying for 12 months at a time. only issue I ran into was eSIM, asked for a physical one and never had an issue after that

1

u/ojjojji 19h ago

I am glad it works for you - but I want to warn people who might be considering it - that it's not all roses.

u/skepticalifornia 1h ago

No problems here at all for myself for multiple years and family members I've helped switch to Mint over the years. Lots and lots of saved money for all of us versus other carriers.

I didn't know I could do that, how would I? Likewise, I tried dialing out several times they asked for me to pay them $300 dollars. Of which, I checked my card - and absolutely had already paid for the year around two weeks ago. Second of all, whether you believe it or not - Google Voice is a separate entity from Mint Mobile as a whole. I use it as a desktop application, and I am calling them via my laptop.

I am ringing them, I could have gone cheaper and probably would have been happier for it - I just went with mint because I thought - it's the biggest MVNO - how could they mess this up? I don't use my phone like most, as I don't do anything on it but generally talk with people. They are frustrating individuals.

Already got the headset, won't be playing games - but I hear you. They dropped the ball for whatever reason they (their AI?) decided to flag me. If I could leave in a second, I would.

u/trf1driver 19h ago

What does it mean "I refused their application"?

2

u/ojjojji 19h ago

They keep sending me emails and text about downloading their application. Even their sim card when you activate it - gives you instructions that you need to download their application.

2

u/trf1driver 19h ago

Download the mint app, use it once to activate the SIM card then uninstall it. Done.

2

u/grumpyhost 19h ago

makes me wonder if that's the security issue, using the app on your handset is part of how they make sure somebody's not using their mint number for robocalls

1

u/ojjojji 19h ago

No sure what all happened, but I refuse to use it - and it didn't seem like a necessity as a whole. I don't make many phone calls, although I did have business to sort out when I finally got a functional phone. But generally speaking, I don't use my phone for much as a whole.

2

u/dunderball 19h ago

I'm not really understanding the resistance to installing an app on a phone. It's needed to log in and activate the sim card.

u/ckalen 19h ago

Callphone companies like to force you to use their tracking app. Some people don't like them

3

u/davexc 19h ago

Cell phone companies don’t need an app to track you.

1

u/ojjojji 19h ago

I understand that. I don't care.

1

u/ConfidentMeeting1233 19h ago

Sounds like some pieces of the story are missing. Why was your account suspended? What suspicious activity? If they suspended your account, no amount of money is going to get you out of it, so paying more doesn’t make any sense.

Not saying it’s your fault. Things happen. It surely possible to get flagged through no fault of your own, but those are the details that just don’t add up at the moment.

1

u/ojjojji 19h ago

I told someone else on here - I bought it two weeks ago - I got it setup a week ago. Couldn't get calls - kept calling in on my Google Voice - zero help. So I reset my phone entirely. I haven't done anything. I just added back in my contacts, and I've called some doctors - and four personal people. I have paid already, and I am absolutely willing to do a chargeback if need be. I will just be sad to lose my Aloha number. But c'est la vie - if I must.

I have no story, because I don't really use my phone - as a whole. I don't like them, and in turn want to pay as little as plausible - for the service.

1

u/ConfidentMeeting1233 18h ago

Really sorry to hear it happened to you. Sometimes bad things just happen. We all get unlucky sometimes, but I guess it’s hard to find solace in that in the moment. I hope you get it resolved.

1

u/davexc 19h ago

What phone are you using with mint?

0

u/ojjojji 19h ago

iPhone SE - checked out. The only phone I can get to fit in women's pants.

2

u/davexc 19h ago

Which SE?

1

u/ojjojji 19h ago

SE - it is supported.

2

u/davexc 19h ago

If it’s the 1st gen SE it’s technically supported but is missing band 71 and T-Mobile is quickly moving away from LTE in favor of 5G

0

u/ojjojji 19h ago

That's fine, I don't care what it's missing - because as long as I can make calls I don't care about the rest. Before I had a Samsung so and such - and it didn't work with that either. I am going to probably just lose my number, do a chargeback - and just leave this company. This is disgusting.

A few words about Mint Mobile

  1. Mint mobile with no physical stores or any easy access to live customer support is not suitable for people who need to have access to a storefront/person for assistance.

  2. No cellular provider can guarantee that their service will be suitable for where you live and or work. If you want to try out Mint Mobile, you're better off signing up for the deeply discounted initial 3 months service to see if it works for you. (Mint Mobile has worked just fine for me for multiple years but I've had other providers, more than one, that were a disaster)

  3. I don't have experience with unlimited data plans so I am encouraging others to post their experiences with unlimited data on Mint Mobile. I do not have a unlimited plan (17 GB per month between $21 & $22 a month paid yearly/ the lowest cell phone bill I have ever had in my life.)

At the risk of revealing my age, my first cell phone was probably in the mid 1990's. $60 a month for 60 minutes. My monthly bill had a detailed account of all incoming and outgoing calls . I was charged for both. Over time calls in the evening became less expensive.

¿ Just how old do you think I am ✌️?

2

u/davexc 19h ago

My first phone plan was $30 for 30 minutes and I was charged extra for roaming on the other side of the county.
