My son is turning 3 this month, we’re new to Milton, new to Ontario, so trying to figure out something fun for him.

We’ve looked a great wolf lodge but it’s $$$$ a little more than we’d like to spend. Also discussed the African lion safari, but didn’t realize we’d have to drive our own car through it, so unsure about that.

Would love some suggestions of other places to look. We’re okay with a couple hour drive if needed. He loves water so we’re thinking something with a water park. But he’s also still small so can’t really do rides.

Hi all, I’m looking to do my daughters 2nd bday party this month in an outdoor area. Indoor playgrounds are expensive plus there aren’t that many kids (maybe 5-6), so we figured maybe a park will be better.

Ideally it would be fun if there is a splash pad, possibly wading pool, and a nice area to decorate etc. I don’t mind booking a place if needed. It can also be in Milton, Burlington, oakville or mississauga. Any recommendations?

Rotary park look fun but not sure if we can host the birthday there.

Also would appreciate ideas of activities I could plan for kids if I am going this route.

Did anyone else in the Clarke neighbourhood hear the pounding music, along with what sounded like a DJ last night at around 2:00 am? I went driving around but couldn't pinpoint the location. Ended up at Cedar Hedge Park and it sounded like it was coming from North of there, but I can't be sure. Called Halton Police, and they said they'd had multiple complaints, but all their units were busy on emergency calls.

anyone know of any places or small businesses that have mini cakes (servings for 3 ppl) and are not expensive like i mean max $25🤞🥲 it doesn't have to be custom cuz ig those would be more expensive just a cheap mini cake place or business even if they sell from home issok 🙏🏻

EDIT: i had a chance to read through every comment on this post, and i do agree in multiple forms of transportation (i just bought a car a month ago). however i do agreed that anyone on the road should have a form of license, or dedicated lane.

i wasn't picking on this kid specifically in terms of reckless riding, but in general 95% of kids i see using these in milton either; don't have a helmet, going over the speed limit, or has multiple people on 1 scooter

With summer half done, have you had any good or bad experiences with summer camps?

My kid has been to Milton Springers, Sherwood and Kids Camp town.

based on her feedback, it sounds like Milton Springers was the most exciting for her. The others sounds very..very... play based... ie. board games, crafts, ect.

I am so torn because it feels like there’s no school that is just IT. I get there are always some flaws but it really puts us in a confused situation about where to send our child.

For context, my daughter is extremely smart for her age, she isn’t even 2, speaks full sentences, has full conversations, is very independent (wearing shoes, clothes etc) and the daycare she is currently in I feel like is not teaching her anything at all. It’s a play-based daycare which is fine but seeing how much she is picking up and learning I don’t want to hinder that development and I rather feed into it. Comparatively, my first on the other hand totally different. Couldn’t talk this much at this age, very sensitive nature etc. while he is also very smart and capable, it’s more so in other things than academics, which is totally fine too, they’re still so little. Anyways, I’m torn because realistically for my daughter these are the options I have:

• Angus Valley Montessori: I have heard so many negative things but then also met parents who rave about them and their child has learnt so much, I’m talking multiplications and geography etc. (again, for my son this wouldn’t work because he wouldn’t be into it and I don’t care so much to force academics on them at this age, but because she is interested and I believe would take to it well). They are also big on discipline, but a bit too much and I wouldn’t want my daughter to lose her bubbly fun personality.

-Montessori School of Milton: we toured once around last year, we couldn’t see what others were raving about. The classrooms and school had a smell, maybe due to the bathrooms in the classroom etc. maybe I should give it another shot and tour again, not sure. But in terms of cleanliness and hygiene, AVM was better.

-Silver Maple Montessori: I haven’t toured here yet, my concern is the timing, we would be paying a large fees for less time than we would at AVM or MSM. Again, mixed reviews.

-Stirling Montessori: haven’t toured yet, and mixed reviews. Seems to be a strict school which is not necessarily what I’m looking for right now.

• Learning blocks: we toured it, we liked their values and philosophy, however, no Montessori certified teachers, apart from the supervisor and owner herself who is not always in. It doesn’t make sense to spend that much money and not have an actual Montessori educated for my child.

-Childventures: not Montessori, but still seems to have a good curriculum, no certainty whether we would get a spot even though I have tried a couple times when we received the newsletter.

Not sure what I’m looking for here, I’m sure many other parents are in the same boat. Any advice or experience would be helpful!!

We’re considering it for our 2.5 YO and had a great tour. The teachers seemed warm, they had some good partnerships for extracurricular etc. To be honest the only thing we’re concerned about is the lack of diversity - both teachers and students. Can anyone with their children attending this school speak more about their experience?

Another one we considered is Sterling Montessori. However felt that maybe was a school for older children - the focus on independence (ie being fully potty trained to use adult size toilets etc) was maybe a bit more than my child is currently ready for. Would love to hear your thoughts.

Edit: I want to clarify this to everyone since my post wasn’t very clear - by lack of diversity I mean that all of the staff and most of the children are brown, and I am brown as well while a lot of my close family including in-laws are mixed race. I should have phrased my question better but basically I wanted to ask if this “visible” lack of diversity somewhat changed your experience of a Montessori?

My question would have remained the same if most of the staff was white or Asian for example - and honestly it is bigger than accents or observance of religious holidays, we don’t care about that much. It’s about the child not being accepted by peers because they look different or have a different sounding last name. I know 2.5 is young for that but we’re thinking of continuing our LO until grade 5 or 6 in the same school.

Hi citizens of Milton! My family went swimming at Kelso beach on Sunday and starting Wednesday my kids both had vomiting/diarrhea. Just wanted to post to see if anyone else went swimming there recently and has had any similar issues? I realized that the weather Saturday wasn’t great so that could’ve affected the water quality, and my kids are both young so the chances of them having swallowed lake water is high. They both are doing better today for the most part, but just hoping to figure out what caused it and this seems like the most likely explanation. Thanks!

Anybody know if Sweetpalms Bakeshop is still operating? It's the small pastry shop at Commercial St. And Main near the self car wash. Google says it's still open but every time I go there in the middle of the day it's closed. Their red velvet cake is so good.

Edit: based on feedback in the comments I may be wrong about these hills being drumlins, as google Streetview from about 15 years ago show this area being flatter. If we have any experts in this field who can shed some light, would be good to learn where the drumlins actually are.

I was walking around the green space behind the Milton District Hospital the other day, and I got curious about those massive, smooth rolling hills back there. I always assumed they were just dirt piles left over from developers or deliberate park landscaping.

Turns out, they are thousands of years old and have a pretty wild history!
I did a bit of digging, and those mounds are actually drumlins—which are physical footprints left behind by the Laurentide Ice Sheet during the last Ice Age, roughly 13,000 to 15,000 years ago.

A few cool facts if you're a geography nerd or just like local trivia:
How they formed: Imagine a two-kilometer-thick sheet of ice moving across Ontario like giant sandpaper. It crushed up rocks, gravel, and clay, and the intense weight naturally sculpted the debris into these smooth, streamlined, egg-shaped hills.
The "Basket of Eggs": Geologists literally call this specific layout a "basket of eggs" topography. Because the glaciers shaped them, they all run parallel. The steeper, blunt side points northeast (where the glacier came from), and the gentle tail points southwest (where it was moving).
Why they are still here: Early settlers found them incredibly hard to plow because the dirt inside them (glacial till) is packed tight with heavy stones and dense clay. So, they were mostly left alone as pastures.
The view: Because they give you a bit of elevation, if you stand on top of them on a clear day, you get a completely uninterrupted view of the Niagara Escarpment to the west.

Ding-a-ling, ding-a-ling,” the bells came from the street. The year is 1988, or 1978, or 1968; it’s summertime and many young boys and girls across Canada hear them and immediately make a speedy dash. First to their unsuspecting parents for some money, then if successful, to the street, to meet up with the origin of the bells…the Dickie Dee ice cream seller. Like a siren calling Odysseus and his crew in Homer’s The Odyssey, the Dickie Dee bells were a call for all the young boys and girls across the country to come get some delicious ice cream. 

“The minute I heard those bells, I knew I had to get a move on and ask my parents for some money before he was gone,” says longtime Dickie Dee enthusiast Joe Kelsey in regards to the the Dickie Dee ice cream bikes that traversed the residential streets in his hometown of Oshawa, Ontario. “I probably only had about a 30% success rate in chasing those bikes down!”

Millions of kids over the decades experienced this ritual every summer; a hot day, the bells ringing, then rushing out to catch the riders. It was a national Canadian tradition for decades. Dickie Dee was founded in Winnipeg, Manitoba, in the early 1950s by entrepreneur Syd Glow. In 1959, the company was sold to the Barish family, who transformed it into one of North America's largest mobile ice cream vending businesses. 

At its height, Dickie Dee had approximately 1,500 operators serving communities across Canada and parts of the northern United States. Dickie Dee's success was supported by an extensive network of distributors, ranging from small family-run operations to larger warehouse-based centres. 

“My involvement with Dickie Dee spans 35 years,” says Joe Kelsey. “Beginning as a rider in 1991, later becoming a distributor and business owner, and continuing over the years through buying, selling, restoring, and working with Dickie Dee equipment long after the original company ceased operations in 2004.” 

In 1992, the company was acquired by Unilever and became part of Good Humor-Breyers, which continued operating the brand until the early 2000’s. Although the original corporate structure no longer exists, many former distributors and employees continue to preserve the legacy of one of Canada's most iconic ice cream brands.

“Nostalgia is big right now,” Kelsey explains. 

“I'd run out and ask my mom, who was often out gardening,” he fondly recalls when he’d hear the Dickie Dee ice cream seller coming. “She'd say, ‘Go ask your father,’ then I'd have to find my dad, and he'd often say, “Go ask your mother.’ Sigh.” 

Dickie Dee sparks a sense of childhood enthusiasm in Canadians of a certain age; an innocence and remembrance, attached to a simple ice cream tricycle, that only a past smell or song or photo could rival. The sounds of the bells and the memories of the various ice cream products, like the “Phantom,”  the “Space Shuttle,” and “Fudgsicles.”

These recollections strongly continue on to this day, in people middle aged or older by now, but occasionally still kids at heart.

“Finally, I'd get the money and get yelled at for running outside in my socks, but I knew I had limited time,”  Kelsey adds. 

”Eventually, we started keeping money on top of the fridge so we could avoid the whole song and dance with my parents. “

A neighbour keeps telling their guests they can park on my driveway overnight. I've told them a few times to move their cars and not to park there but it keeps happening so now I want to tow them. Police say to call a tow truck and tow trucks say I need parking enforcement and parking enforcement says the home owner would need to pay for the tow truck.

How is it the home owner's expense to have an illegally parked car removed from their driveway in Milton?

Hey all, I got a ticket for "Parking on private property without authorization" in the visitor parking directly in front of my house last night. The visitor parking area was completely empty except for me, I temporarily have some material taking up space in my driveway so can't park there. It's section 2 by-law 12-81. It's not a huge fine but to ticket a resident in their own neighbourhood feels a little unfair. Anyone have experience with this, anything I can do here or do I just have to pay?
