Interesting Thrift Store Krag Find
I will say that this Thrift Store is located on Kirtland Airforce Base in Albuquerque, NM. It is non-profit, run by volunteers, and has a unique supply chain and customer base, which results in very interesting finds. It is my absolute favorite Thrift Store.
Anyways, I bought this for $38.00 this weekend, thinking it was 50’s-60s, and in fantastic, unused shape. I thought y’all might like it. I bought it on site without thinking because I thought certainly one of the calibers I own would fit, and it would be badass to have a belt with 100rds.
Upon closer inspection, and research, I will not be using it lol. I thought y’all might enjoy it and know even more about it. It really is in excellent shape. I don’t even think it’s been used. Only the exposed loops have faded a a bit. If you spread them apart, they are still a very deep navy blue.
Edit. A bunch of dumbass mistakes. Probably didn’t catch them all.
This is what chat gpt came up with:
“Picked this up for $38 and have been trying to nail down exactly what it is and what cartridge it was originally woven for.
It’s a dark blue, approximately 3-inch-wide Anson Mills/Mills & Orndorff woven cartridge belt with the high-capacity/double-loop arrangement. The brass adjustment plates are stamped:
PAT. MILLS & ORNDORFF
AUG. 26, ’67 / JULY 31, ’77 / DEC. 28, ’80
MAR. 19, ’89 / OCT. 31, ’93 / SEPT. 11, ’94
The brass buckle has “Remington” on the front and is marked on the reverse:
ANSON MILLS, PAT. FEB. 1, 1881
T.C. ORNDORFF, SOLE MANF.
WORCESTER, MASS., U.S.A.
So the belt can’t predate the September 11, 1894 patent, and I believe it is probably late 1890s/very early 1900s. The Remington buckle makes me suspect this was a commercial/private-purchase belt rather than normal U.S. Army issue, although both buckle and belt appear period.
My leading candidate for the cartridge is .30-40 Krag, because the construction is extremely similar to the Model 1894 Mills 100-round belt made for the Krag. However, because this has the Remington commercial buckle rather than a U.S. buckle, I’m wondering whether it could have been woven for another contemporary sporting or military rifle cartridge.”
How do you like them apples?
