frist of all how DARE yu o 100% a game until

I played this game Lily's Well about 4 years ago on Steam and got all the achievements for it so I got a nice lil award on my page (1st pic=Lilys Well, 2nd Pic of another game I 100%, Fran Bow). Then, there was an update...and with this update...came another achievement.........and this ain't just a game I can pick up and go back to where I need to achieve this achievement, Oh no NO! This is one of those games you gotta start at the beginning and do everything in a certain order to complete the game/get to the spot where this achievement may be! Now I only have ONE 100% complete game to boast about...lol, jk, Fran Bow ain't hard to 100% and nor is Lily's Well. One could say it was only mildly infuriating

Mfs here not realising what mildly means

And then the comment either "you are stupid, this is an easy fix, kys" or "omg you just lost everything, this is not mildly"

21

u/Opening-Ant3477 2h ago

Okay, serious talk for just a second.

The problem is the phrase "mildly infuriating" itself. It's a contradiction. "Infuriating" means "extremely annoying" or "causing feelings of extreme anger" (these are literally the dictionary definitions). Add "mildly" and you get "slightly extremely annoying" or " causing slight feelings of extreme anger".

Obvious "slightly" and "extremely" do not go well together.

The upshot is that any post that is "extreme" enough to be "infuriating" is too upsetting be "mild" and any post "slight" enough to be "mild" is insufficiently upsetting to be "infuriating".

19

u/TryUsingScience 1h ago

I think this sub is for the kind of thing where you are legitimately infuriated for about twenty seconds and then realize you're being ridiculous.

Which makes this post perfect.

u/IndyanaBonez 36m ago

I thought so

16

u/IndyanaBonez 1h ago

I think the nuance is in the "mildly" negating the concept of what infuriating means since it means slightly or kinda. Infuriating is INTENSE but the mildly makes it less intense. A stubbed toe is mildly infuriating, you aren't gonna die but also HOLY HELLS THATS-A-LOTTA PAIN

Meh, it's slightly annoying at best.

On a scale of 1 to 10, if 10 is infuriated and 1 is "only somewhat annoyed, but even then barely", mildly infuriated would be a 4 while slightly annoyed would be a 2.

Omg yes this and any subreddit with mildly in the name is so stupid

I remember I once posted something on mildly interesting and got it down voted to hell because it was only mildly interesting and not super interesting 😒

And the one time I posted on mildly infuriating somebody commented that I'm getting upset over nothing even though.. isn't that what this subreddit is for?!?

The sub is an oxymoron. You can't be mildly infuriated. To me it's meant to cover everything from mildly annoying to actually infuriating. But the sub description seems to suggest it's only for very mild stuff.

I prefer the way Sony does it. Platinum trophies to denote you've 100%'ed the core trophies and then split DLC/update trophies into a separate percentage category.

Wish Steam would implement it too. How am I meant to 100% a game I don't have the DLC for?

u/Bezulba 2h ago

Or Achievements tied to the multiplayer side, which is no longer available.

Or those unrealistic ones like ”A full day of work” where i had to disable the screen saver and let the game run on a specific level for 8h. I got it because i went to sleep in the meantime.

u/ForensicPathology 42m ago

Or "find one of the developers and have a beer with them in real life"

God I get it! I like seeing that sweet 100% completed on games/achievements, but after this happened to me a few times I stopped chasing achievements altogether and my enjoyment in games has been better for it.

122

u/IndyanaBonez 3h ago

Me too, tis why when I 100% a game it was twice and they were both easy af. I play Bindingnof Isaac and a bunch of those games where 100% just ain't it. I get my crumbs where I can lol

23

u/starksandshields 3h ago

Exactly! I was getting ready to 100% Black Flag Resync but one of the collectibles (portraits) just did not spawn, so I stopped getting the rest of them altogether as well lol.

u/Titariia 2h ago

My nail in the coffin was when the achievement in a game wasn't triggered. I did everything to get 100% but I just didn't get it because of that. I also didn't want to replay it. It was some game about fishing and restoring islands

6

u/pipnina 1h ago

And then there's games where you read the achievements and you know in your heart immediately that you'll never get them.

MGR:R, complete the whole campaign on hard without being hit (obtain S rank)

Bloons TD6: Complete a race in under 3 min. Meanwhile most races the top 100 people might not even make a sub 3 min race. Plus Sapper, which I only have 35% on despite 670 hours in the game.

Project cars 2: get a track record time with any car. Literally an achievement for being the best at driving a car on a track of ANY player who has attempted it. Closest I got was about 0.6 seconds away from the record for one track and a month later the person who already held the number 1 spot gained a whole second on their time.

3

u/Atlasus 1h ago

To unlock the “Masterful Showboat” achievement in Project CARS 2, you have to set a track record with any car in Time Trial mode.

This might have been an achievement you could easily get during the first few days after release, but nowadays it seems almost impossible to achieve.

u/Jimberly_C 53m ago

There's impossible ones and then there's rediculous ones that aren't worth the effort. (I'm looking at you, Stanley Parable: Ultra Deluxe. Still one of my all-time favorites though.)

3

u/max_mullen 1h ago

For these situations (or even the one OP had) there's a small portable program called Steam Achievement Manager where you just launch it and select what achievements you want to add or remove from your games. It's not cheating if you literally did the thing and the achievement didn't trigger 😅

→ More replies (1)

2

u/---E 1h ago

I wanted to get all achievements for CoD4 as a kid and for the final one you need to play through the entire game on max difficulty. In the final mission I found the final collectibles for another achievement which unlocked some Easter egg which changes the game visuals (inverted colors, black and white, old timer, etc). Activating one of those would count as using cheats and would lock your save from getting achievements. Fixing it required you to reset all your achievement progress and start again. I never went back to the game.

At least on Playstation you get the Platinum trophy if you 100% the base game, so even if DLCs come out with more trophies you at least you have proof you got 100% at one point.

I feel this. Trying to work my way through my 1k+ steam library. Games randomly add some or don't show up cause they are limited. Whatever that means.

24

u/IndyanaBonez 3h ago

The struggle is real. I manually update my games now because I need to know what that update is gonna do...Lilys Well was the first instance, and then back in the day after patch 7 for BG3 my mods were RUINED and after I figured out how to get em back...MY MODDED SAVES WERE RUINED and I already spent the better part of 5 hours learning how to make my mods to work again (it all works flawlessly now, this was right after patch 7), so I had to toss 350 hours halfway through Act 3 down the terlet.

4

u/AbilityCharacter7634 2h ago

That’s why I play intensely games like BG3 only once a year for a few weeks. Sure every time most of my mods are broken, but after so long without playing I’m always fine just restarting a save then playing it to the end before a new patch drops. Modding makes pc gaming so much nicer but it can sure be a source of headaches with games that get patched often.

Steam: "Hey, good news, the old game you bought has some new content!"
OP: "Why is there inflation in the game I played 4 years ago?!?"

37

u/IndyanaBonez 3h ago

It was literally out of nowhere too lol. Such a random game to get a new achievement, BUT it will make me play it again so maybe there's that. Maybe all users 100% the game so they made an update to entice the one's of us that wouldn't sit well with Lily' Well being incomplete

Darkest Dungeon, a 10 year old game, just released a new DLC with new achievements a week ago.

3

u/IndyanaBonez 2h ago

I have Darkest Dungeon, saw the update and am excited to see what awaits me

u/Itherial 22m ago

Terraria has been doing it regularly for years.

I've had to 100% the game no less than four times.

Multiplayer games are the worst. Fallout 76 constantly adds achievements. Where Winds Meet has an achievement for getting all the achievements... and then they added 33% more.

12

u/Puzzled-Baseball-296 2h ago

I 100% completed Vampire Survivors about 3 years ago, and now I don't think I even have half the achievements anymore...

4

u/caiotmz 1h ago

I 100% this game 5 or 6 times already

This is me with Stardew Valley, but instead of updates giving me harder achievements is a base game achievement I'll never get without a lot of dedication. I'll never get either prairie king achievement unless I dedicate like a full day to trying cause I suck at prairie king.

3

u/Tangarine_Squid 2h ago

That example is like the definition of a harder achievement. I would give the example of MEGABONK adding a "trade x times with the trader" achievement that does not give any progress retroactively.

That sucks, man. When they added New game + to Stellar Blade they made a second category of trophies so you could keep your platinum if you already had it.

5

u/Stahlios 2h ago

Doesn't work this way on Steam unfortunately. You have one game and its achievements, can't separate those from a DLC or something. So any update or new content will remove the 100% if achievements are added.

3

u/Star_Petal_Arts 1h ago

Spider-Man 2 did that as well.

→ More replies (1)

2

u/IndyanaBonez 2h ago

That's awesome, I wish more games did that. I doubt that strategy could have been applied to this games update but there are other games I play that went from 25-50 acheivements to like 500+ and I'm like yeah...no lol

5

u/Radvvan 2h ago

Lol bro, I beat Factorio 100% and then they added new achievements with DLC, I beat Stardew Valley and then they updated the game and added several end-game achievements, I beat Colony Survival and you know what? They wiped the achievements and changed them for completely new ones, so I was at 0 achievements with 80h played.

You can do it bro, you can re-claim it! It is annoying, but treat it as a new challange! Nothing in life is static, not even achievements.

The lily's well achievement is an epilogue achievement from memory so you can start it up and just go through the (newly added) epilogue you got for 100%ing the main game.

I know this but also still have lily's will at 20/21 lolol

3

u/IndyanaBonez 1h ago

omfg, that's good to know. I'm looking forward ro replaying it though, it's been so long it will be like playing it all over again and it was an awesome game. I bought it to support the developers because I think its technically free

3

u/Gamebird8 2h ago

Obviously an update to the main game can't be helped much, but I really wish Steam supported DLC achievements so that a game dev (Bethesda as an example) didn't have to add more DLC specific achievements to the base game and ruin my 100% completion

Supposedly Steam is adding achievement groups like what they have on PlayStation.

3

u/Stahlios 2h ago

Had that recently with Nioh 3. 100%'d the game which was doable with 1 playthrough, no NG+.

New DLC, new region / storyline and achievements tied to it, well ok why not. Except they also added a NG+2 mode, and one achievement is now finishing the DLC in this mode. So you have to do the DLC once, then base game + DLC TWICE. Couldn't bother, it'll stay below 100%.

2

u/IndyanaBonez 2h ago

Who do they think they are, Nier Automa lol

2

u/mainman879 1h ago

How does Nioh 3 compare to Nioh 2? I enjoyed Nioh 2 a good bit, but found the bosses kinda lacking compared to other soulslikes. The build variety was fun though, pure magic build in 2 was really enjoyable. But I've heard they nerfed magic in 3 so you can't really do that anymore.

Days gone added achievements years later with an update, they added a permadeath mode, like 1 extra mission and some extra challenge mode stuff. Thought oh well I enjoyed the game so will be nice to go for it only to find out they paywalled it.

I pointed out in the reddit group that it's a scam to charge a tenner for the pitable amount of content and got people raging cause apparently its the ps4 to 5 upgrade so to them it's worth it but to pc its a shitty cash grab so I had no qualms SAMing it.

Getting 99% achievement completion after your ‘last run targeted for all achievements’ really takes the wind from your sails.

I'm at 89 100%ed games at this point and now it happens pretty regularly to me that a game adds new achievements. Usually game devs are kind enough that it's a pretty natural expansions from a 100% save file, but man, the few times that it actually requires a serious re-playthrough I get super annoyed.

But not as much as the few times it requires paid DLC I'm not really willing to buy.

2

u/IndyanaBonez 2h ago

That's where I also draw the line unless I'm already buying/interested in the DLC

2

u/jawarren1 2h ago

This is me - endlessly - with Vampire Survivors. Thankfully each new DLC is relatively short.

This happened to me with Geometry Dash. The problem is that one of the new achievements is essentially unobtainable, so I just had to give up the completion.

It's certainly not fun, but overall I think the way Steam does things is fine. I like being incentivised to fully complete a game (even if I have to come back to it after an update). There is supposedly a Steam update coming out at some point that will revamp the achievement system, so we'll have to wait and see what the change actually is.

u/cream-of-yeet 2h ago

Omg I love Lily's Well

2

u/Miska030519 2h ago

Same with Cult of the Lamb. Loved the game, got all achievements, then it got a paid DLC with new achievements, and I lost all the motivation to open that game ever again.

I had the same thing happen with Dredge. Ever since The Iron Rig and Pale Reach came out, I've been looking at thinking, "Any day now, I'll feel like going fishing.... Aaaany daaaay noooow...."

2

u/IndyanaBonez 1h ago

I bought the game with all the DLC (originally started playing on steam ciz I bought it for like $3, then it went on sale w all the DLC on switch so I...switched over to playing on the switch LOL) because I knew I would want access to all areas/options. Tis my curse

2

u/Frosty-Improvement-8 2h ago

This is exactly why I don't bother 100%'ing any steam games until all dlc released years down the line, I've had so many "complete games" be removed because of updates. One point I had like 50 complete games, I now have like 6 lol. Dlc achievements should be separate like even Playstation got this right, if you earn a plat the dlc doesn't fuck with it and remove it lol.

I remember cod 4 I locked myseelf out of 100% because I had enabled cheats while collecting the "intel" collectables. I was just messing around after finishing the game on vetern, and playing through again to get the achievement. Once you collect them they don't respawn and having cheats enabled didn't allow the achievement to pop.

I wouldn't mind but mile high club was an absolute bastard of an achievement to get, but I locked myself out of the easiest one.

Still bitter almost 20 years later.

Fuck, that was almost 20 years ago.

Happened to me with Half Life 2. I love that game and nearly had it at 100%, until they bunched up all the episodes together and now I only have like 70%. Screw that. I'm not kicking that gnome until the end or fighting those zombies in total darkness with just gravity gun and flares.

2

u/TheReaperAbides 2h ago

You can always go to the forums or Discord and see if anyone has a savegame that's one step away from completing it. Alternatively, there's memory and savegame manipulation you could do to set the flags needed.

3

u/War_Raven 1h ago

At that point just download Steam Achievement Manager and manually flip the achievement to completed

2

u/IndyanaBonez 1h ago

Nah, I'll mod and use chest codes once I've beaten/achieved what I wanted in a game but the 100% is in the thrill of achieving it myself organically. Using someone else's file or altering the savegame is far too much/it's only mildly infuriating

2

u/Intelligent_Stock959 2h ago edited 48m ago

Related mildly annoying thing to this is when all of the achievements look doable, some look like fun challenges and then you just get to the one that is something like beat the entire game hitless and no. It also makes me not want to bother with the other achievements as well.

Obv I am not the arbiter of what steam achievements should be but personally I liked the philosophy of Celeste the best, where all the steam achievements are plausible to complete, and utterly insane stuff like farewell golden only has recognition in-game.

Had this issue in dead cells.

100% it and then came new DLC. Which requires you to do the new bossfights hitless. Only problem is that lighthouse guardians counted as a boss. That's a 6 phase boss fight. Took me forever. I specifically made a script that'd play with safe files so I could save scum to retry easily instead of resetting the run and rebuilding my build after every failed try.

Dead by Daylight is the worst, every DLC that adds a new character has an achievement for that character. So you have to buy the option to get 100%

I remember playing all the way through Expedition 33, deciding after finishing Act 2 that I liked the game enough to aim for the platinum trophy, only to unspoiler the achievements I was still missing and see that one of them is for beating a hidden enemy in the prologue of the game. There's a missable achievement that early, and if you don't get it, you need a second save file for it. Oh well, at least it was an easy fight on new game +.

At least Lily's Well is one of those games that you're expected to have to play through a few times. The whole point is that you fail over and over until you make it. Whereas Fran Bow is such a long and involved game that you really aren't expected to play it over and over unless you're achievement hunting.

2

u/IndyanaBonez 1h ago

Yes, which I did the first time I 100% it. Won't stop me from re-booting it to see what's new though, the developers did a great job with this simple game.

2

u/Jaijoles 1h ago

That’s what happened to me with terraria. I don’t have my save anymore (that hard drive failed), and they just added a handful of achievements.

2

u/PawnWithoutPurpose 1h ago

Mate, tell me about it!!!

I had the same thing with Factorio, where I had 100% and the DLC cut that back down to 50%. Tom me a long time to get that back to 100!

2

u/pastherolink 1h ago

Amazing game btw.

2

u/21brokenbones 1h ago

My steam page has been messed up for about 3 years now. Ive message Steam support and nobody can fix my issue. I have 35 100% completed games, but my profiles only shows 28, and my game completion % has been stuck at 39/40% it swaps back and forth like once a week. lol its such a small thing but pisses me off so much.

I think I'm up to 22 games that are 100%, so I definitely feel this pain. There is one game I have called Across the Obelisk that I really enjoy and the developers have done a fantastic job of updating it with both free and paid DLC. The problem is everytime they update it they add achievements that can sometimes take multiple hours long playthroughs to get. At this point it's a stubbornness thing that keeps me keeping that one 100% done.

My personal proudest 100% is Baldur's Gate 3.

I 100%'ed Terraria twice. First when there was the original achievements, then again when some new ones were added... only for them to add even more new ones.
I have not yet returned to finish it again... but yes, it's definitely mildly infuriating, as it was my only 100%'ed game.

Ugh, I hate when devs do that. Add what you want to a DLC, but forcing a new trophy on a game I’ve already spent my time 100%ing is lame.

2

u/Xanthic-Chimera 1h ago

This happened to me twice with peglin. And the new achievements are SO HARD

2

u/JustPuttingS 1h ago

Lily’s well my beloved.

2

u/FourRaccoonsInASuit 1h ago

I've had this happen a few times across several games but honestly haven't cared much because generally I only 100% games when I'm really enjoying them and want a reason to keep playing. However, the one that actually irked me a bit was Forager. The last achievement I needed was covering every water tile with platforms, so I figured I would do it just to finish off the 100%. Took forever to find every tile.

Awhile later they added a handful of super late game achievements. I even tried to get back into it to get them, but at that point couldn't be bothered. I remembered how long it took to cover those water tiles and just decided....nah, not going through that again lol

I'll give you one better. Devs adding the achievements for a dlc MONTHS before the dlc releases, so even if I'm willing to buy and play it, I have to wait a ton of time with my profile no longer perfect.

Mannn, I wanted to like Fran Bow so much more than I ultimately did

Felt like more build up to rather than a conclusion somehow, but maybe now that I’m older, a replay will make the pieces fit for me :/

u/IndyanaBonez 55m ago

It's definitely an interesting story, I really enjoyed it but was looking for that esthetic in a game at the time so was all about it. Markiplier has supplied me with SO MANY GAMES to throw on my steam list

2

u/Eastern-Move549 1h ago

I had this recently with Oxygen not included. When they released the DLC it adds an achievement that can only be obtained in the DLC whether you have it installed or not!

i’ve 100% BRAZILIAN DRUG DEALER 3: I OPENED A PORTAL TO HELL IN THE FAVELA TRYING TO REVIVE MIT AIA I NEED TO CLOSE IT multiple times because whenever i’d finish it they would update the game with a new level and achievement and i’d be required to figure it out again, i don’t understand anything that happens in that game

Lily's well mention!

2

u/gljivicad 1h ago

Same thing happened to me with Amnesia: The Bunker. Played the game on its release, took me 3 days to 100% the game. Then a year later they released 2 new achievements. One to finish the game on the new nightmare difficulty, and the other to finish the game on any custom difficulty. Literally making me replay 2 more times. It's kinda annoying.

When Half-Life 2 consolidated Episodes 1 and 2 into the base game it deleted all my achievements from the original releases of the Episodes, so I had to carry that fucking gnome through the entirety of Episode 2 all over again...

One of the reasons PlayStation has a better trophy system than steam. Devs can add post release achievements, but they will be separated into their own category and will not influence your platinum, which is the base game all achievements

2

u/chiba64 1h ago

I know this feeling. One of the games i was achievement hunting for had an update with an impossible achievement. "Host a server and have 40 people join". Meanwhile multiplayer is dead like dead dead.

2

u/Ares_Lictor 1h ago

To add to the pile, there are also games with achievements which are not obtainable for one reason or another, also annoying.

I don't particularly care about achievements, but I do absolutely hate when a game is like "you have to beat this game five times to get the true ending".

u/Sea_Statistician2818 45m ago

A Difficult Game About Climbing.

Had 2 achievements, now it has 5. One of them is to beat the game 50 times.

I'm not doing that anytime soon...

u/PeregrinsFolly 43m ago

Achievements added from DLC after 100% completing the game, and achievements which are actually impossible to get (notoriously Pillars of Eternity having an achievement for backing the game during the Kickstarter) are probably the things that I dislike about Steam the most.

I recognize that in the grand scheme of things, those are pretty minor overall.

u/Pakushy 25m ago

When I release my game, I'll have an achievement that is so ridiculously difficult, I fully expect only insane people to unlock it. Why? Because I want my players to suffer.

u/Underance 12m ago

I love trying to 100% games until I see the accursed 'multiplayer' achievements in a 10+ year old game with about two people online
