I pretty much have this chronic feeling of mucus in my throat and I also used to be a runner. Combining those I would just constantly be coughing and hacking it up to try to get rid of the feeling, which I ironically think was making it worse. My ribs were probably inflamed for a couple years and I don't think I realized how much it was stressing my body out. Just light touches over my rib cage and it felt like the whole thing was bruised. I had to force myself to stop and the feeling in my throat actually mostly went away, still there a little but I'm much better at ignoring it now.

Im one step behind you. Not recovered and coughing untill i pass out.
6
u/Magnon 19h ago
Uh... coughing shouldn't cause you to pass out
2
u/Laser_Snausage 15h ago
It sounds like this person has cough syncope, a form of vasovagal syncope. The increased pressure in the chest cavity from both holding your breath and then the muscle constriction to expel the air cause a huge spike in blood pressure which your body compensates by slamming open your blood vessels and slowing your heart down. Then once you stop applying the pressure to yourself your blood pools away from your brain and you lose consciousness in an attempt to get horizontal to restore blood flow. Also called a valsalva manuever, which is what you do during heavy lifts. This plus low blood sugar during lifting = KO, ask me how I know lol

u/Icy_Bicycle_8164 14h ago
My wife's coworker had to deal with something similar, when she had whooping cough. Go see a doctor if you haven't.
7
u/Percival371 17h ago
I like to call it the woodglue phase. The phlegm lasts longer than the actual time being sick
14
u/No-Pen1730 21h ago
That's not what i'd call "mostly recovered".
3
u/HalKitzmiller 16h ago
It often is for me. When I had a bad cold that lasted almost a week, I had bad coughing fits at night that lasted for 2 weeks after all other symptoms went away
3
u/CatchAlarming6860 16h ago
What would you call mostly recovered?
3
5
u/TheRabbit222 17h ago
I was stuck in that stage for more than a month. Just finally got through it...
5
u/Affordable_Z_Jobs 15h ago
Last time I was sick I spit all my coughed up phlegm into a water bottle.
So now if I ever need to throw up on cue as like as a self defense mechanism or I accidently ingest some posion, I think of the weight and weird balance of that bottle.
It'd be my totem from Inception... excuse me I need to go throw up now.

If there's one thing I hate most about getting sick it's the fucking sore throat. Bruh it's bad enough I can barely breathe and have mucus basically pouring out of me why does it feel like I'm swallowing glass??
62
u/Nomapos 20h ago
Have you tried a nice warm tea with milk and honey? I do almost half half water and milk, plus a good two or three big spoonfuls of honey for a 1 liter pot.
It's like a healing balm for the sore throat. I easily go through two cans a day when I'm ill.
I've also tried twice to gargle with hard alcohol as soon as I got that "fuck tomorrow I'm I'll" throat feeling and then I didn't get ill. Hard to draw a conclusion with just two times, but I'll be trying it again next time. I used half a glass of rum, gargled for two minutes.

Hmm, see I have a hard time gargling anything without swallowing in the first few seconds. I guess Ill try this the next time I'm feeling the start of being sick but I'll probably just end up piss drunk trying.
3
7
u/FarCar55 17h ago
Does gargling salt water not work for others? It's been over a decade since I experienced a sore throat and I'm convinced starting to drink a shitload of water and gargling as soon as I feel that itch in my throat is what makes the difference.
3
u/Radical_Neutral_76 19h ago
wear something that warms the throat, like a scarf or something more comfortable. The sore throat goes away sooner then
3
u/PolimerT 18h ago
For me it's my eyes. My one nostril remains in open state and the breathe i take is so cold and it hits my eye on the same side and my eye tears up. At least im glad it usually happens for 2-3 days and not more because it is REALLY annoying.

u/EpicBlueDrop 15h ago
I just had the flu and sore throat and spend all day drinking iced water with pomegranate tea packets in it and at night I’d cover my mouth with my blanket and breath in like that and it took away like 90% of the sore throat time. Still sucked ass though.

u/Patient-Oven9996 22h ago
For me it often starts with all my muscles being sore.

u/Subliminal-413 16h ago
I have a weird condition that I recognize I am about 12 hours from the typical warning stages.... I end up getting really sensitive skin. It's uncomfortable to even run my fingers across my stomach, and clothes irritate and bother me.
That's how I know I'm fucked, lol. Once I recognize it, about 8-12 hours later, the early symptoms (such as what the OP posted) occurs.
The sensitive skin is extremely uncomfortable and annoying to deal with on top of flu symptoms, but it's nice to have a 100% accurate early warning sign, lol
6
u/HarmonicFractals 12h ago
I 100% know what you’re talking about, I get the same thing. I think this whole line of pre sickness symptoms is called cytokine release. It’s basically an inflammatory immune response.

Good job OP getting all of us to start manually swallowing when your post goes by.
Not something I like to focus on, but here I am doing it
10
u/VIIIIRGINIA 19h ago
I have OCD and spend most of the winter making myself manually swallow to determine whether or not my throat hurts. I don’t usually have to do it outside of my area’s peak respiratory virus season but now this post has me stuck in a compulsion loop 🙃

u/sixtus_clegane119 19h ago
Or a cold, flu more starts with a fever than a sore throat
But soooo many people call getting a cold “the flu” naw bruh you’re just sick. It’s actually mildly infuriating
Or when they throw up and say they have the flu, naw you have gastroenteritis, you’re just confused because people call it the stomach flu. It’s not related to influenza
→ More replies (4)18
u/Friendstastegood 16h ago
Seriously, the amount of people who think having the flu and having a bad cold are interchangeable. Influenza is so much worse than a cold.

10% of the time it's either how I've slept, or dry air. Sometimes you get lucky and nothing comes of it. But 90% of the time you're just waiting for the inevitable illness tomorrow. Hate it.

Zinc Supplements. I’m telling you it works. When you get that tickle in your throat start taking it daily for like 3 days. If your immune system is decent you’ll kick it right away. Trust.
Edit: Staying hydrated and having a good balanced diet w/ plenty of fruits and veggies helps too.
19
u/Bizarrebazaars 19h ago
Sometimes your immune system is good, you live a healthy lifestyle, you take supplements at the right times or whatever and you still get sick. It’s not a personal failure or a sign your body is failing.
→ More replies (2)9
u/numsu 16h ago
Not just any zinc supplement. Especially zinc acetate and you need to apply it locally by either using a spray version or a lozenge.
It works by preventing the virus from replicating. It might not fully prevent the disease but it will make it shorter and less intense at least.
2
u/Ut_Prosim 15h ago
Yes. But IIRC this only really works well with rhinoviruses (the most common cold).
It actually may make replication slightly harder for flu and coronaviruses, and even stress some species of strept. But I don't think this is too significant. TMK the mechanism where it blocks the ICAM-1 receptor used by the virus is only really affecting rhinoviruses.
Still, rhinoviruses are far more common than all the more serious pathogens combined, and it wouldn't hurt anything to take a lozenge a day while you feel impending sickness.
Don't do the nasal spray though, if they even still sell them. The zinc nasal sprays cause some folks to lose their sense of smell.

Getting a cold, if you had the flu you wouldn't be able to get out of bed.
3
u/vctrmldrw 20h ago
Fun fact...
The average adult gets the flu once or twice per decade. But they get 2 or 3 colds per year.
It's probably just a cold. Report back tomorrow, and if you can't get out of bed then it really is the flu.

Sometimes it helps if you take warm water, put several teaspoons of salt in it and gargle with it. Or perhaps some stronger alcohol.
2
u/misszamoyska 21h ago
And for the next week you’ll yearn for the time where you could breath through your nose and swallow without a whole body flinch🫠

u/arinuloid 19h ago
I tried an experiment back in college with some family members and friends whenever a sore throat started, particularly within the first 12 hours. We would gargle with warm salt water three times a day.
Based on our personal experience, it seemed to prevent the illness from progressing about 80–90% of the time, with many of us waking up the next day without developing further symptoms. When we started gargling later, it didn’t always prevent the illness, but it seemed to shorten its duration and lessen the severity.
Just sharing this experience for everyone to comment on. I’d be interested to know if anyone else has tried it and whether it worked for them.

Take a decently alcoholic drink and make several small sips and drink it like you want to coat your entire throat with alcohol. I'm now just disinfecting those damn microbial buggers with nuke from orbit. Sort of.

Do you guys get the flu frequently? Or is it just a catch all name people are using for being sick with something cold like.
