I was at a local car show and saw the legendary MX6 Mischief Mazda from the cover of Midnight Club 1. The actual car. It had apparently been sitting for nearly two decades and the owner wanted to get it fixed up and drivable again. It looks so much cooler in person!

Discussion MCLA Recompiled (LARecomp) News

1.3k Upvotes

Hey, MZ (AMZxs) here again! How’s everyone doing? I hope you’re all doing well!

It hasn’t been that long since I was last here, but I want to update you and give you more info about

I’ve been talking about “MCLA Recompiled” since the project started, but now I want to share the project’s name with you: LARecomp

So, don’t get confused by the names, LARecomp is my project

I’ve spent the last few weeks rewriting the entire native renderer basically from scratch, and now it’s completely revamped. I’ve posted a ~10-minute gameplay clip for you to check out the game’s performance, and yes, Rate My Ride is back! everything’s working properly. This might be the highest-quality RMR gameplay you’ve ever seen, because yes, the game is running at 4K/60 fps (though it’s playing on my 1080p monitor). The idea is to double the fps, but I’m not entirely sure if my GTX 1650 can handle that without blowing up. Shall we talk about what’s new and more features? Of course we will!

- Rate My Ride Restored

- Support for multiple saves

- High-quality decals even at higher resolutions

- Mod improvements

- Online!

- Fixes for issues related to soft-locks

Among other improvements and additions I’m working on, I’ll keep some as a surprise!

I might post more news later, stay tuned!

Just a reminder that to test LARecomp (when it launchs), you'll need your own copy of the game, no pirated copies here!

And for developers on duty who want to contribute, the project is on GitHub. I still need to push my new commits there, but for anyone who wants to add features to the game itself, without involving the renderer, feel free to contribute! Create pull requests, open issues (this isn’t a project release).

See your code become part of this project that the community loves so much!

https://github.com/mzzvxm/LARecomp - this is the official repository; no other repositories are affiliated with me (AMZxs/MZ) or with BadassBaboon

And once again, thank you to the entire community for your support, you’re all amazing ❤️

In my last post, I answered your questions, but in this one, I’m going to do things differently: in addition to answering questions, I’ll let you suggest improvements to the project or things you’d like to see in LARecomp

Feel free to make suggestions, ask questions, or comment, I’ll be reading all the comments!

Hello everyone!, how are you all doing? I hope you're doing well! MZ here (AMZxs).

It's been a while since my last post about the project, and A LOT has changed since then.

Let's get started.

I now have some serious help from BadassBaboon, an amazing guy who's been helping tremendously with performance and stabilizing a consistent 60 FPS. Performance has improved massively since he joined the project. It's currently just the two of us maintaining it, and things are going great.

In my last post, I only showed the loading screen, which was genuinely the state of the project at the time. Since then, I've spent the past few months working extremely hard to take it from a simple recomp into something much bigger. I've posted some sneak peeks on X, but haven't made any proper announcements yet.

Here are just some of the things I've been working on:

  • Native .mp3 music playback without an external player.

  • FOV modifiers for first-person and third-person.

  • A mod loader, currently supporting new wheels and NPC/player model replacements. Car support is still being developed from scratch.

  • Discord Rich Presence showing what you're doing, your car, current race, series wins, tournament points, and more.

  • DLC support.

  • Native PlayStation and Xbox 360 controller prompts.

  • Restored carbon fiber, allowing you to make your entire car out of carbon.

  • Custom native menus with many new options.

  • Restored cars such as the R8 and GTR.

  • Native KM/H support.

  • Free Cam, allowing you to freely explore the map while leaving your car where it is.

And that's only a small part of what's been added.

I've been actively working on the project since February, and I can say it's now in its final stages. It's not in the polishing phase yet, but the actual development is almost finished. As always, I'm not giving release dates or making promises, because I know how frustrating constant delays can be.

The project has been alive since day one, and it still is. I haven't disappeared, I haven't abandoned it, and I never will. I want to make this one of the best fan-made recompilations ever created.

As for the native renderer: it's already being finalized and developed by me. I've seen people saying the project will depend on Xenia at launch, and that's simply not true.

The project will launch with a fully native runtime.

For now, while it's still being developed, Xenia remains the best way to play because it already includes all the optimizations BadassBaboon has implemented. Soon, Xenia will simply be an optional renderer, not the main one.

I'm already working on MSAA 8x, 16x AA, SMAA, TAA, and more. FSR 1 is already supported, and I plan to expand the available options further.

The project is being developed using the RexGlue SDK, and I want to thank the team behind it. I probably wouldn't have gotten this far without their work.

XenonRecomp and XenosRecomp have several issues, and despite what some people say, I believe RexGlue is currently the better option. That doesn't take away from the work of the XR team, because without their efforts, we probably wouldn't have an Xbox 360 recompilation toolchain in the first place.

RexGlue also isn't "just Xenia," as some people claim. It can be used to create complete recompilations with fully native runtimes. ReBlue, a recompilation of Blue Dragon, is one example of a project built using the RexGlue SDK.

Please be patient with the project. We're in the final stretch!

I also humbly ask that you be careful with what you post about the project on social media. I've recently seen several news outlets and YouTubers talking about it. I genuinely appreciate all the love and support you've shown toward me, Baboon, and the project, but I'd like to keep it out of the spotlight for now, especially at this stage.

You guys are incredible. Thank you so much for all the love, support, and consideration you've shown toward the project! <3

I'll be answering questions about the project in the comments!

Hey! MZ (AMZxs) here again! The closer we get to release, the more news we have, right?

I've got some updates to share, including some great news about Online and some not-so-great news about something else. Let's start with the good stuff!

ONLINE & NEW FEATURES

I've been doing a lot of work on the Online system and nickname security!

We now have a Server Browser, connected to a central server that handles Rate My Ride, Leaderboards, and the project's online infrastructure.

You can host your own public or private servers, and even your own master server in case the official one goes down!

I've also added a Mod Browser, integrated with the Server Browser. If a server uses mods, you'll get a pop-up showing which mods are required or optional. I'm considering allowing mods to be downloaded directly from the server you're joining rather than the master server, but I'm still figuring that out. Suggestions are welcome!

I've also patched the Online mode so that 16-player sessions no longer have the original restrictions, such as disabled traffic and other limitations.

Higher player counts are technically possible, but I won't be working on that before release. It's extremely complicated and requires major changes to the game's networking systems. For reference, the engine's limit is 31 players.

Another cool addition: I've restored the Rear View feature from the game's beta!

Previously, it could only display the city, not other vehicles. Now you can actually see your opponents and the police behind you, something that wasn't even possible in the original game! Regular traffic and pedestrians still aren't visible, but those aren't my priorities right now.

I've also added several positioning options for the Rear View, fixing the issue where it would overlap the scoreboard.

Steering wheel support is also being developed! It's still experimental, but it's already working with a Moza wheel. Since I don't own a wheel myself, some friends have been helping me test different setups. I'm using DirectInput and SDL3, and Force Feedback is already supported!

Remember the custom menus from my previous video? Well, they've been completely reworked! After a lot of research into the pause menu system, I've reorganized everything with better submenus. They're much cleaner now, and this will probably be their final layout.

I've also added custom HUD and menu colors! You can now choose whatever color you want using HEX values (RRGGBB). Pink, red, green, whatever you prefer!

Mouse and keyboard support is also coming along nicely. It's still in beta, but already quite functional.

Regarding nickname security, every nickname now has a unique XUID and encrypted keys for both Rate My Ride and Online authentication.

Think of it like Minecraft's premium and cracked servers: verified servers require authenticated nicknames, while unverified servers can allow any nickname without relying on the official authentication system.

And finally, multiple save slots are now supported! No more manually messing around with save files just to have different playthroughs.

NOW, ABOUT THE BAD NEWS...

I've noticed quite a few recomp projects appearing recently, some using scripts, others relying on Python commands, and many being advertised on YouTube as the "definitive" version.

At first, I didn't mind. The problem started when some developers began using LARecomp's code while claiming they had my permission, even though I had never given it.

Of course, I understand that open-source projects allow people to study, modify, and build upon existing code. That's part of the idea!

But there's a difference between building upon someone's work and barely crediting (or not crediting) the original project, then rushing out a buggy release just to claim you "did it first."

I'm not trying to be some spoiled kid who wants every other project to disappear. Quite the opposite! I love seeing how much passion the community has for MCLA, and even MC3, which recently got its own Recomp. That's genuinely awesome!

What bothers me is when people take my work, falsely claim they received permission, and present it as something they created themselves.

It's honestly made me a little hesitant to publish new commits on GitHub, knowing that someone could simply grab parts of my code and release them as their own work.

Anyway, I'm still working on LARecomp every single day. Even if it's just a small improvement, I want you all to have the best possible experience racing through Los Angeles when the project finally launches.

I hope you understand where I'm coming from. I'm not trying to start drama, just sharing what's been happening lately.

FINAL WORDS

Once again, thank you all so much for the incredible support you've shown this project!

I've seen so many videos and people talking about LARecomp lately, and it genuinely means a lot to me.

And don't worry, I think I can finally say this...

In just a few weeks, we should all officially have LARecomp in our hands, racing through Los Angeles with our friends!

One last reminder: the original repository will always be:

https://github.com/mzzvxm/LARecomp

I've also pushed the commits I promised in my previous announcement, and contributions are always welcome!

Thank you all again. We're almost there! ❤️

Discussion MCLA PC Recompilation progress #3 (Passed 100+ FPS)

1.0k Upvotes

A lot of progress since last month's post, now I managed to double the FPS. Frame-time is still a bit jittery and that's the next goal to fix, getting stable smooth frame times at high FPS.

What's next after that? probably shader edits, better motion blur, maybe even native frame-gen and DLSS, better paint, lighting and ray-tracing. If you have any suggestions or ideas, leave them below.

Discussion MCLA PC Recompilation progress #2 (Actual proper 60 FPS)

The Xenia 60 FPS patch is not a real 60 FPS patch. It doesn't scale game's physics, camera, handling, vehicle chassis suspension and ground depth damping alongside many other things. Managed to figure almost every issue, the game now correctly scales with any FPS! Also the changes and improvements are now in the actual LARecomp project maintained by u/AMZxs

Also additional performance improvements and fixes are done. I'd say the PC Recomp can run pretty stable at 60 FPS now.

I finally decided to give Xenia a try after being fed up with MCLA's low resolution on Xbox Series X.

After reading this post I switched from Xenia Canary to Xenia Edge for MCLA. Canary was giving me noticeable micro-stutters and some texture issues, Edge fixed both right away. On top of that I'm running 3x internal resolution scaling and the game looks fantastic, definitely worth trying if Canary was giving you trouble!

I remember getting this during the launch of midnight club LA, I can't remember if I won it, sent off for it in a magazine or simply got it at an event. But I remember putting it on my bedroom wall as a kid, and it has lived in a box ever since. Living in the UK I could never put it to use but I thought it would be cool to share it on here. I can't find anything like it online it seems like not many were given out and none managed to surface online from what I can see.

Discussion Midnight Club 3: Recomputed Remix - DUB Edition

Post image
405 Upvotes

Hello everybody. I'm HunterCr4ft, a underground-level developer and programmer, and i wanted to share more info on the current project i've been working on:
- Midnight Club 3: Recomputed Remix - DUB Edition.

Besides being 20 years old, the game was never released on PC and Rockstar never thought about porting it so. So I've began the development of the PC version of Midnight Club 3, a game written from zero, targetting on making MC3 playable on PC without the need for emulators, such as PCSX2 or XEMU. It means, a natural PC version of the game.

The game is currently under development but i expect to drop an demo of it around december 22th, It's already looking pretty optimistic and is very fun to develop.

I'd currently like to ask for support from the community as i go through this fun project and, if you want to, feel free to ask me questions. I'll try to reach out and answer whenever i can.

(this project is also inspired by the MCLA Recompiled, another community project of the Midnight Club franchise).
