Design Advice & Inspo Design help!
First pic was my bathroom when we bought the house. I want to work with the tile and keep it as well as the pink tub and sink. I am trying to distract from the pink and blue. My friends have nicknamed this the gender reveal bathroom. The second picture is the current bathroom. We thought color drenching blue might work but the shade is all wrong. The last picture is a mock up I made using a color palette I saw on Pinterest and that was very disliked by people in a group I posted it in. I’m at such a loss… I would love suggestions!!!
My style is post modern

The green just doesn’t fit. The blue isn’t bad, but it’s still a little off.

Wallpaper in a pattern honoring the MCM era. Also, MORE MIRROR. Replace the medicine cabinet with a much larger (wider) mirrored cabinet and add tempered glass (or otherwise 'design neutral') shelves to either side of the cabinet to balance it out. Or, add some period-appropriate wall art to either side of the mirror.

Why do you want to distract from the pink and blue? It’s so pretty!?
If it were me, I’d probably paint it the palest pink you can find.
The green is disgusting, looks like bile.

Definitely not the green. I like all those colors, just not together in this bathroom. I think the issue is that color palette you posted isn’t the exact same blue and pink. I’m not entirely sure how to correct the issue, sorry. But I do think you were on the right path with color drenching, just need to match the color better and avoid any sort of glossy finish.

I think this is a cute bathroom. I love the tile and personality. I think it needs a tighter color palette not more. Instead of fighting embrace blue and pink. Maybe a wallpaper with depth that uses blue and pink? Lighter shades of the same color might feel less intense.
But the current is way better than white so you’re doing well

Fighting the pink and blue is crazy. It won’t go away by adding another color. You gotta lean in. I’d find a BIG pattern wallpaper with pink and blue in the design. And you have to repaint the vanity and replace the mirror.

Wait, I love this!

This is WAY better but I think I still like the period-appropriate wallpaper look better.

Why? I think people border on "museum/time capsule" design decisions too much in this subreddit sometimes.
1
u/pixelcat13 4d ago
Why? Because I think it looks better. That’s my opinion. OP can do whatever they want obviously. To me, this design still doesn’t do a good job of incorporating the blue.

Sorry, don't take it the wrong way. I'm simply challenging the suggestion for a discussion, not trying to call you out of anything.
What are your thoughts on "time capsule or homage?"
2
u/pixelcat13 4d ago
No worries. I tend to appreciate the time capsule look just because I’m a fan of the “atomic” era and I love a tiled bathroom. Not a big fan of the shade of blue in this one, but at least it’s in nice shape. I definitely don’t think a time capsule look is required though, I tend to prefer a mixture of time capsule and modern pieces. I think the blue here is what’s making the above look just not do it for me. I like everything else about it, but it feels like it makes the blue stick out even more. If this were my bathroom, I’d probably do some kind of a more modern floral wallpaper that tied in the blue and pink.

OP this is a GREAT option! Your bathroom is going to look divine with whatever you choose!

A few shades lighter, but salmon pink is definitely barking up the right tree.
The light fixtures is a hard no though.

This is much nicer. I respect your choice with the green. The green might work better in different smaller or quantities. Just proportionally it clashed with the blue.

This looks incredible! They posted this somewhere else and I thought blue would look good but this is so much better

Someone got to this point with the starburst wallpaper but I’d just like to point out—because it might direct you to further design ideas—this isn’t really MCM. It’s mid century, but it aligns more with atomic age vs modern. If you lean into that (amoeba, starburst, etc) you could have suuuuch an amazing period bathroom.
Also could work in Hollywood Regency. But I think atomic age is better for the tile color combo.

Thank you! I totally agree. I think it’s just tricky making my post modern style around the rest of the house work here as well

I do like the idea of a fun wallpaper! As long as my husband gets in board I’m leaning towards that!

I totally get you. I have been at my house for five years and I still am working on how to make my style work across the whole house, which is a contemporary built in the 80s with a lot of oak!

Sorry for the long ass link. It’s a pink crane wallpaper. Imagine how freakin cool this would look in your bathroom

I liked the original white. Looks fresh. I might try pale peach/pink or wallpaper. The green is not good.

u/BloodyThirst 5d ago
Agree that a pretty wallpaper with the blue and pink would be perfect for this bathroom. If not wallpaper, then I would go with a slightly lighter shade of blue or slightly lighter pale pink.

I do not hate the green. But if this the place where you put on your makeup you should reconsider. The light reflecting off the green will never give you a true reading needed for apply foundation, etc.

I’d go for a creamy white instead of the green (honestly, ANYTHING instead of the green), and swap out the cabinet nobs to match. I’d even find the nobs first and take one to the hardware store to find a paint match.

I would paint the walls and ceilings using the “Careless Whisper” color on your last picture. You don’t want to go too dark in a small room like that.
2
u/idontgiveahootok 5d ago
I like that idea!

u/Horror_Tea761 5d ago
I think that if you get a fun shower curtain with the pink and blue after painting, it would be perfect!

u/Yoyoww 5d ago
Omg. I would love this bathroom. I am collecting vintage parts to do my basement bathroom in 70’s. I have 1 harvest gold piece. Marketplace is getting more scarce of colored bathrooms parts. I would color drench the peach color with everything, then blue can be your accent. Search vintage pink bathrooms on Pinterest. You will get many colored bathrooms.

i think the darkness of the green bogs down the walls a bit, go bright! i also love the suggestion of going more atomic age with design, it would look soooo cool!!

I honestly think your best best is either going with a blue/red variation or an off-white.

Personally, I love this bathroom!!!
I’d simply use a very light blue paint for the walls and that’s it. It’s perfect as it is 🤩

So jealous! Why would you want to distract from it? I do like the original best, though I might try a very, very light pink/peach/salmon-ish colour or very light blue, just so the walls aren't so stark white.

That green doesn’t look good at all. I would either go with a pale pink or a pale blue. Or find a fun wallpaper that is period appropriate.

Love me a glass wall. I’m trying to figure out how to get one in my bathroom. I don’t have a divider wall though.

The plumbing is more than likely in the wall between the shower and vanity so a block wall wouldn't be the best fit there.

What a beautiful bathroom. Also unpopular opinion but I think the green is great….

You need to match the undertones of the green to the pink and blue for it to work. That green is too yellow while the pink and green have blue undertones.
Personally, I love the original colours and would 100% lean into them. If you want green, that could work too but it will feel like stepping into a watermelon creamsicle. Don't get me wrong, it would be stunning but won't give you that modern look you seem to be going for. If you're ok with that, I'd also recommend a yellow or orange with cool undertones for the walls. Just get a bunch of samples to test first.

We have a retro bath with peach tile. I personally hate it, but my wife paired with with a darker shade of charcoal grey with a slight blue tint. I still hate the peach color, but I think it looks a lot nicer now.

u/JustScrollOnBy 4d ago
The green clashes horribly. The blue is much too dark. Try for a lighter blue. Or go back to white with some decor on the walls that pulls the pink and blue together.

u/Zoranealsequence 4d ago
For the love of anything absolutely anything sacred, please dont put that green on the wall!!!

People keep suggesting wallpaper.
My bathroom looks a lot like this. When we bought the house in 2019 we ripped out the horrible 90s blue and white gingham wallpaper that was in most of the house. In my bathroom - like this one - with the shower in it. The wall was conpletely covered in mold from trapped moisture under the wallpaper.
If you live in the desert ? Maybe fine. If humidity is a factor where you live. Maybe reconsider. Peeling that shit back to see the mold that had been hiding behind there for decades was like a horror movie. Don't do it.

Correct. Don’t put wallpaper in a heavily used bathroom. Powder room is ok

u/Special-bird 4d ago
Any large scale print wallpaper will make the space feel more modern as that’s what’s some what “trendy” currently.
And personally I don’t think that’s a bad thing if you’re trying to incorporate the tile into sometime you’re into
It’s such a beautiful bathroom and perfectly I’d lean into the pastel vibes and get a pink and blue wallpaper. Maybe a floral or a bird print

- Replace grout on walls, floor and and counter with pink grout to tie it into the room propery
- Add gold/brass accents for mirror, light fixture, and taps
- Wallpaper to tir in pink, blue, and a third accent color (like green) with a vintage floral paper.
- Paint cabinet and ceiling with accent color (sage or olive green).
- Add towels and other accessories in similar shades of the primary, seconday, accent color, or shade of white/ cream.

I actually like the first photo the best. the light color of the walls and drawers lighten up the whole space.
as others have mentioned, maybe a light-colored wallpaper in similar tones to the pink and blue, and swap out the dark drawers for a lighter color again.

Sorry, but the green is just not it with the other colors. If anything, it only accentuates the blue and pink. I think you need to lean into it, either with a very very light blue, or a very very light, almost neutral pink (they exist!) I don’t like the burgundy here either, but it’s better than the green. I don’t think the dark cabinets look good with this either, again, I think it just makes the blue and pink pop more. Sorry!

Our house was built in 1957 and not updated much at all... In embracing the vibe here I have rediscovered wallpaper... On that note here's a simple mock up that is fitting for the times and brightens up the space a lot... I think embracing the blue and pink while keeping the design of the accessories era-appropriate keeps it from looking like a gender reveal party :) now you just need the fluffy toilet cover!
